I was wondering what the best virtual midi keyboard controller that uses your physical laptop keyboard? or does Ableton live 8 already come with one? Just looking for some advice.

You will notice on the top right of Ableton a small icon that looks like a keyboard. This enables your computers keyboard to act as a Keyboard for your synth.

Load the synth/vst into your Midi track, ensure it is selected and type away.

Yep you can use your keyboard to control any synth really. All you need to do is make sure the track is armed (there should be a little red icon that looks to me like a hockey stick in a circle at the bottom of the midi track you want to control).

Not the most practical thing in the world though.

In my own experience, the only thing using your keyboard is good for is playing around with sample notes while I fine-tune my synth setting. But that's just me. If you can get away with it instead of buying a midi controller, why not?
