I believe its a shame that a thread about the new SSL degrades into a Traktor vs SSL slog...

I wanna know about SSL and the users experiences not why people chose Traktor over SSL.

Just my grumpy 2cents.

Sorry Karlos, your staying in the bag! Im taking you to the DJ Expo at the Jersey Shore! LOL

But lets see, my user exp on Serato 2.1
Super Knobs work great, i dont have a dicer so i cant comment. My HC-1000s is more reliable and doesnt crap like it did pre 2.1. Audio sounds the same with the SL1, its about CD quality (i know it depends on bit rate of my mp3s) but to my ears thats how it sounds. My latency is at 5ms or 1/4 on the slider.

Havent mess with the chained fx's because im not a real fan, but I will try it and respond back. TBH serato is catching up to traktor in the fx's world and its nice to see that they are taking a serious look at midi. I cant wait until they take internal mode more serious and it will be knocking on Traktors door.

Its just the more younger DJs are using Traktor. Thats my experience as a club promoter and working DJ. Older DVS users have SSL in there 1000s.
Must be nice to have a certified mixer or an installed A8 in the clubs. As a Traktor rat I would love for that to be the case in the States.

While I love taking nothing but a hard drive and headphones to the venue to play someone else's SSL rig, I feel neutered playing it. I spend more time and energy beatmatching than I would with Traktor (I'll say it, beatmatching bores me), and Traktor's very robust beatgridgrid and loop/jump section is a foundation to the way I mix.

But I will say that I've gotten opportunities to play places that would have refused me if I had said something like "nah, I only know Traktor."

These places are lame and the other DJ's who run operations like this are not very cool, but to me a solid gig is a solid gig.

SSL is the default kit here. I'd estimate that I've met probably one Traktor Scratch user for every five Serato users.
ive actually herd quite the opposite.

Traktor is the sominant force in europe while here in the states its Serato.

in fact i dont believe i have seen any big name people (originally from the states) not use serato live. Rusko himself uses traktor

@Proben serato is really push midi and has jumped on fxs, heck they have "super knobs"...wonder where they got that idea from? Be yes serato is plug and play and the default settings have you playing in no time.

I used serato for a few years before switching to TSP and it has always been incredibly easy to use. I actually bought it only hours before a gig and used it at the gig -- it was that easy to use. (I had watched people use it before that so I wasn't driving completely blind but literally the first time I actually hooked it up to a system was that very evening - at the Viper Room of all places, hehe). I did have some vinyl with me for backup but I didn't need it (though I did play a couple songs anyway). It's really set up for people to be able to move from vinyl to DVS almost transparently, and it's pretty good for that purpose -- obviously when I used it that first time I didn't have time to analyze my tracks or any of that; the only prep I had was reading the manual while pounding a burger.... I haven't used it since version 1.8 I believe but I installed 2.1 on my machine so I might play with it at some point. I actually really like Serato, it just doesnt have the flexibility of Traktor, particularly with MIDI and effects.

bump "to keep it real"

a bit of a late bump, but thought id share

got back to campus and went over to a friends place to use his vinyl and such (he uses serato SL1)

I hooked up my laptop via usb and it recognized it almost instantly, pretty much plug and play.

We jammed for about 2 hours. This was my FIRST time using serato and I must say, If you have been usin traktor for while, u should have no problem picking up serato.

Beatmatching is loads easier than it seems, the peacks on serato wave display helps loads. after 2 mixes I was able to perfectly beatmatch all the rest of my mixes perfectly. I even learned how to jump from 128 electro to 140 dubstep

most clubs in the US should have an SL1 or 3 box and serato gear . It really is plug and play guys. I can safely say that after using it for just 2 hours, I am confident i can use it ant any club that has it available

i havnt heard rusko mix, but mixing dubstep is uber easy because 9 out of 10 times the intro and break down of a song will be 32 beats long
just hit play and/ or fade to the middle and the cut out the first song on the drop

if rusko cant do that its because he's high while playing. and if he cant do it when hes not high....ouch

Look im just trying to keep it real. Here in Los Angeles, and for most of the USA...us traktor/midi dj are looked at sd "button pushers" & are refered as 2nd class djs next to Serato DJs.

Im really tired of djs asking how do I get gigs and how do I get my foot in the club. Well here it is, LEARN how to use Serato! and once you become a superstar dj then you can play on what ever tickles your pickle! To play in this game you have to be 2 steps ahead. What if some other dj is a no show and you have to do a set on cds? or Serato? and there is no room for your digital setup?

After I get back from the DJ Expo Ill show you what I have in my DJ bag.

Macbook Pro/VCI-100/Audio 8 & 2/Serato & Traktor Vinyl Timecodes/CD Booklet with Regular CDs & Serato & Traktor CD Timecodes/Needles & Slipmats/Flashlight and a midget!

If I can't practise mixing at home without buying the hardware then I'll pass...

Plus, I haven't got enough time to use, maintain and learn 2 seperate systems.

Plus, I'm happy with what Traktor provides. I can haul my system around in a laptop backpack and set it up anywhere with or without CDJs, turntables or Serato...

And I should add that, in the UK, I've never actually played a venue that has an SSL box built in.

...but that of course is just my own subjective experience. I'm sure users of other DVS feel the same about their DVS.

JesC: QUALITY POST!

I own Traktor Scratch Pro, but I love that I can go anywhere and use other peoples' gear to DJ with Serato.

Do it, even if you're primarily using midi. Install SSL, analyze your track collection, play around with the single deck and learn the keyboard shortcuts.

And get more gigs than anyone else without hauling your entire setup around by being flexible. It's the professional thing to do.
