Regular vs SE for a n00b?
Posted on: 25.12.2009 by Erin Brubacker
Just starting out, leaning towards a VCI-100 + Audio 2 and will use them with Traktor Pro. I plan to be all House/Electronic (from big beats to ambient). Want to learn mixing and scratching. Aside from the bugfix for one of the keys, will newbs have an advantage from the SE version (I don't want a more confusing/complex controller early on)?

Definitely upgrade to SE, even if you don't end up buying the unit from here. I'm coming from the same place as you - just recently started out, and had a chance to buy a used regular VCI-100. After playing around with it for a few weeks, I decided to do the upgrade.

I'll tell you this - I'm very happy that I did. As dero mentioned, with the regular VCI-100 it'll take some time to set it up with Traktor, and even then I find you won't be taking the full advantage of what you can do with the controller. With the SE (or the equivalent FW upgrade and overlays) all of the features are readily accessible and are very easy to set up.

Mind you, there are still some minor bugs, but that's the beauty of it - with the new firmware you'll be able to take advantage of whatever new fixes are coming out

If you are just starting out I would go with a VCI-100SE. There are plenty of in depth tutorials how to use the mappings here along with the support of the DJTT community. It comes ready to go out of the box. Getting a regular Vci-100 to work well with Traktor can be a bit of a headache if you don't know what you are doing. As for Vci-100 vs. Vci-300 here is a comparison:http://www.djranking s.com/2008/10/0...00-vs-vci-300/

I believe that question is best answered as to what style you want to play! VCI-300 was meant to have a slight advantage in the scratch department!

I don't own a VCI myself but nearly have enough saved for the SE sold her on DJTT!

I'd get the VCI-100 SE because it's tried and proven plus DESIGNED for Traktor Pro, whereas the 300 is mainly Serato and is only a recent addition in comparison to the tried, tested and improved VCI-100 SE!

Ean and the crew are in the middle of bringing out the new SE 3.0 with new mapping/layout! Once they finish the BETA testing and release it officially with the new layout printed on the cases, that's when I'm joining the VCI-100 SE Fan Club!

Hope I helped a bit, I'm by far no expert on this topic just sharing what I've learnt from these guys!

How do you guys believe the 100/SE stacks up against the 300?

SE is kinda complex and difficult to get around with sometimes. The ultimate solution is of course to just make your own damn tsi the way you want to make it, but that takes time to learn how to do and organize and that's all time that you could be spending eye-f***ing that hot chick in front of the booth.

sooo.... just get an SE. There's a lot of happy people with them, and I doubt you'll be any different. Plus they look damn sexy in the black color scheme.

How does it do with the ladies?

Seriously though, is the SE designed for a certain DJ'ing style or more tailored for experienced folk?

The SE version transforms into a cyborg Armin Van Buuren and scores you a shitload of gigs. The regular version doesn't.
