VCI not working after upgrade
VCI not working after upgrade Posted on: 21.05.2010 by boygah tekraj After a couple hours, I finally completed the upgrade of the new firmware 1.3, or so I thought. I connected my VCI to my laptop and noticed there was not the usual noise the laptop makes when it recognizes hardware connected to a USB port. Then, I pressed a few buttons and turned the jog wheels, but absolutely no lights, no signal from the Data Send LED, no power indication.I used the correct serial cable and followed the directions. I even tried everything again and still nothing, no power after the completion. I have not seen this problem occur in previous threads. Not sure if this is supposed to occur, upon completing the firmware download, the Renesas Flashware, displays the message "Completed" before it closed itself. I'm not sure it is supposed to close itself immediately upon completion, but that is what happened. Afterward I unplugged the USB, then the firmware kit, and replaced the harness cable and gently assembled everything together again. Still no power. Does anyone have any idea how I get my VCI working again? Thanks. Here is what I used: XP from my old desktop 9 pin serial cable (male to female) Powered by the desktop USB, was not working when powered by my laptop. | |

boygah tekraj 21.05.2010 | *UPDATE* Firstly, thanks for everyone's contributions of suggestions. I was in a little panic since I could not get any functions or power out of my VCI after the upgrade. I originally used a serial to serial (male-female) as recommended and my old desktop running XP. I had unistalled the flashware previously, but mistakenly I reused the original .exe FDT file that I had on my desktop. I followed Photojojo's advice of uninstalling and reinstalling the Renasas flashware. What finally worked was going to the Renasas website again and downloading and installing it a 2nd time. I again followed the video instructions, and this time the flashware went through the entire loading procedure. Success! Thanks to the DJ TechTools team to also following up on email. Everything seems to be working and the ramp issue is no longer there. Great job! |

Leeanna Ayla 21.05.2010 | Any progress? |
Corine Kasman 20.05.2010 | @roberto. Just the obvious but it is a serial-to-serial and not a null modem cable? I did my VCI with a good old serial cable with no problems. Also make sure the upgrade board is plugged firmly into the socket of the VCI board (you HAVE to take out the adjoining plug). All obvious details, but I miss them sometimes... Phil. |
boygah tekraj 20.05.2010 | I am using a serial to serial cable. Would changing those settings recommended for the serial to usb still apply? |

boygah tekraj 20.05.2010 | RE: black ribbon (cardboard). There was not a black piece of cardboard in the firmware connection space used to apply the firmware kit to. I do have the white rectangle protective paper (approx. 4"x8") that was glued to the board and did re-tape that piece back when I reassembled the VCI. Maybe I overlooked this small black piece, but I also did not see one in the video when I reinspected. RE: Renesas flashware. I recall reading that there might be something wrong with the flashware crashing. Each time I have loaded the firmware it said "Complete" and closes instantaneously. I thought that was odd, it did not give a prompt or option to click "Finish" or another command to end the session. I am going to try to uninstall and reinstall with the advanced settings you suggested. Would you mind telling me how I may adjust those settings and where I should find them (step by step) please? I am not very computer savvy. Thanks so far for everyone's suggestions. I hope to report some good news soon... |
Leeanna Ayla 20.05.2010 | My software would crash after initial loading and it said something to the tune of it being complete (it really wasn't) I reinstalled the software and changed the delay value in the FTDAdvancedSetup.exe to 1000. Worked like a charm after that. The FTDAdvancedSetup.exe should be in the Renases folder you unzipped. |
Corine Kasman 20.05.2010 | He means the black cardboard that was glued to the PC board on the bottom of the unit. A member forgot to put this back on (just tape it on) and had lots of problems. Phil. |
boygah tekraj 20.05.2010 | Thanks for the response. Small black ribbon? Are you referring to the harness with the multi-colored cables? If so, I did replace that back into its slot. I have taken my VCI apart 3 times to redo the steps from scratch according to the video. I can do the whole procedure in about 8 minutes now! Still unable to get a power response from my VCI. I don't know what could have happened. And don't know what else I could do. Any other suggestions? |
robin loo 21.05.2010 | might sound stupid, but did you put the small black ribbon back at its place? the one you have to remove to put on the fw upgrade kit.. |
