How do I update my firmware?

Please visit this post to learn how to update your firmware:
http://www.djranking s.com/2008/08/1...-100-firmware/

If you have problems please visit this thread:

Which firmware version does your VCi-100 have?
Version 1.1
the firmware with the "ramp up problem"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b2Y509VQVEQ

the jog wheel touch sensor turns off when the wheel stops turning, not when you release your finger.

Version 1.2
-VCI-100's with a green sticker on the back are firmware version 1.2
- this version solved the ramp up problem but still has several bugs including
* the fourth FX buttons send out the same midi message as the right headphone cue button.

Version 1.3
The firmware found in all VCi-100SE controllers that was designed by Ean Golden.

You can tell if you have 1.3 by following these steps.

1) connect your vci-100 to a computer but dont start traktor.

2) Click the button that is at the top right hand corner of the left jog wheel (its next to the filter knob for deck A).

3) If this button's light toggles on and off then you have 1.3 (the same button on the right deck will not toggle on and off.

Here are a few of the changes made in 1.3

general improvements:

* Eliminated the problem where the 4th FX buttons trigger other buttons (cue)
* added midi in functionality to the loop buttons
* added a note on to the jog wheel in scroll mode

performance:

* turned the filter knobs into double knobs (0-127 on the left and right side)
* added a "freeze function" to the bottom of each fader and top of the fx knobs. this sends out a 127 message only at the end of the movement
* added inverted messages to the faders (this allows an effect to be turned on by turning the fader down- not possible otherwise)
* added unique values to the FX buttons (these were used for direct FX selection- now added in Traktor Pro)

Hi all - first, massive props to the DJTT team, I have recently received the new VCI-100 v3 overlay - it looks awesome and the mapping is top notch. Quick delivery to the UK as well

I also ordered the firmware upgrade kit - and herein lies the problem. None of the links to the Renesas website for downloading the Flash Kit are working. Even if I browse to the Renesas site and navigate through their menus, fill in the download request form etc .... still no joy.

Could someone please post an alternative, working download link? I am itching to get the new firmware on asap.

Okay, well if a serial extension cable will work, then what could be causing this 15024 error?

It seems as if the software is not connecting at all with the upgrade chip. I've plugged the USB into numerous sources, unplugged and replugged and all that. But still it seems like I can't connect.

Any advice to confirm my computer is seeing the chip?

Actually that is what I used, the serial port on my PC has a male socket and the firmware upgrade board has a female socket so I got a female to male and it seems to have worked fine, will confirm toevening once I get TPro all hooked up and mapped.

The only thing I did differently was to have the cable plugged in and attached to the board and vci before I plugged in tha turned on the power.

In all videos i have checked the thing just pops out.... mine just wont, whats the secret to prying it loose for the first time? i believe im one tug away from snapping it.

I'm in the sinking ship that is the U.S.A. Empire!

I'm having a hard time finding a cable online that is 1:1.

Hey Ean, it might be helpful to add a link or two on the firmware upgrade store page that can direct customers to a serial cable that is the correct type.

I've spent the whole day calling around the city trying to find a store that still has one. I'm too impatient to wait for one to be shipped to me, I'm American dammit!!

What country are you from?

I had exactly the same problem, i first ordered a extension cable because it was male to female. That didn't work so i looked up the website i ordered it and i saw 2 other cables which said 1:1 in the ad. They were m to m and f to f so i had to order both but it worked.

How would I tell if the cable is 1:1?

It's male to female, so I assumed it was the correct type (compared to the null modem type Ean warned against)

I was wondering if it was the cable, but those suckers are hard to come by these days and I don't have another to compare it to.

Thanks for your help guys, hopefully soon I'll be up and running like the rest of you!

Check if it is a good serial cable. You say it is an extension cable, try using a 1:1 serial cable so you know that it is capable of transferring data (i had the same issue). Also check if you don't have a program to update things like a PDA or something that uses a COM port (check my post in the other sticky firmware thread on last page).

Well, I tried a different USB cable in multiple USB ports, with the same result.

I've even disconnected the serial cable all together and the FDT program is saying the same thing:

Flash Development Toolkit and flash programming components

Attempting 4800

Attempting 1200

Shouldn't it give me a more immediate error that nothing is connected?

I've read a lot of people have the 15024 error when using a USB to serial cable, but I'm not, and never have used one. I'm just using a serial female to male extension cable.

Has anyone else had and overcome the 15024 error while using a female to male serial cable? I read the other sticky post on the firmware questions and haven't found anything that seems to solve my problem.

I remember reading that alot of people were having difficulties this... Have you tried using a different usb cable?
Can't remember any of the specifics sorry, just have a memory that the problem was being caused by the cable itself..
Hope this helps..

Hey guys, so I've read all through all 9 pages of this post and I'm still not getting past this point:

That damn 15024 error is crushing my hopes and dreams ... and keeping me up too late. I am using a serial extension cable male to female, I've tried changing the COM# numerous times, I've used three different USB ports on different computers and hubs for powering the VCI. It lights up when I remove the flash upgrade, and then turn on USB power, so it's getting juice. I've also tried the serial port off my lenovo dock and with my Compaq Evo. Both are giving me the same errors.

I want to play on the SE soooooo bad :-(

Can I haz some help pleaze?

Thanks guys!

I got my f/w update kit the other day and decided to go at it last evening (ooh err!). After the initial speed bumps of discovering all my serial cables were female to female I dug out a USB to serial I had inherited somehow, found a driver for it and succeeded with the f/w update at the first attempt. YAY!

My controller passes the 1.3 test, insofar as the button at 1 o'clock above the left jog (labelled sync on mine) toggles and it's opposite number doesn't.

Everything is tickety-boo now, thanks DJTT!

The only marking on my USB to serial cable was CH341 or something. No manufacturer name. If anyone has a similar cable to try I can rapidshare the driver I used and offer any other help I can give. Running Windows 7 fwiw.

Hi! everybody, I'm form mexico, and my english is not good haha, but let me say you that today I have been Updated the firmware of my VCI-100 to 1.3 with the kit of DjTT.com , and let me explain something interesting to guys that use a USB to Serial converter, well I use my Tripp Lite USB-Serial converter.

First, using a HP laptop with XP SP2, I installed the Drivers of the Converter and then the software to update the firmware. then I follow the steps of Ean's video :P.

The first time the software began, but then send me an error message (15005 Read time out). I did all again and the message error change to Error No 15024: Boot failed .

I try again and the message error(15024) appears all time. then I do this, I put the Power switch in the middle (off), and flash it, the message error appears again (Do this make the message error change to the 15005 again),and now I put the power switch to right (like in the video, ON), and change the value of delay in the port with "FDTAdvancedSetup.exe", I use 1000, and flash it, and this happened

If you decide to format instead, then go all the way to Win7 instead of Vista. Vista is already 3 years old, and Microsoft has only promised to support it for another year or two. While it will continue to support Win7 for the next 5-7 years (based on their track record with earlier versions of Windows). So within a couple years you would have to upgrade your Vista. If you are going to format, skip Vista (and a second format a few months from now) and go to win7

ok gais

IT WORKED!!
finally my report, could be interesting

used a standart usb - serial noname cable
tried diffrent drivers no one worked, till i found one on the net, just few dlls - no exe
i cant remember the URL but i could upload it here or on rapidshare if you like

then first i had
Error No 15060: Error while opening the port
Error No 15026: Unable to open comms
Error No 15061: Error while closing the port

with com9 ( hardware device and software )
then tried com10 ( device and software ) same shit
THEEEN tried com1 ( device and software ) --- > WIN!
so this "higher than com3 using usb-serial" is not always usefull @ EAN

update: as of this morning I fedexed off my controller to DJTT because I was not able to find a US service center to flash my firmware.. Ean called me up and said to send it in. So I am starting to feel back in the groove.

An odd week. my Imod 80 gig bit the dust, my portable Millet Tube amplifier got an intermittent channel, my ALO Cryo Line out Dock for my ipod gave it up, and I found my dream speakers ,,,,and yet lost them to another bidder before I could pick them up...- oh Mac dented my macbook pro, blew my logic board, and forgot to replace my defective keyboard, I dropped my Ultrasone edition 9's on the pavement,

Mercury must be retrograde..

car needs a new transmission... $1700 for the rebuilt transmission and about $1500 in labor... car alarm going off for no reason...

On the bright side.. I've been working a lot.

But nothing like a VCI-100 to keep you busy- and the free drinks flowing.

I believe my controller bricked.. arrrghhh.

I should have just lef tit alone... never upgraded... Sending back my entire arcade kit for a refund (sans the overlay which I never got to use and have to peel off ..)......sad because the guys at DJTT are super cool and I'd love to give them my business.

Alternatively I guess I'd have to ship it to vestax.. for a firmware upgrade.

I had so much enthusiasm for a community pulling together to make a better controller... Eans video 2/2 on the VCI

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=qcaYVn...eature=related

made me fly SPECIALLY to Japan IMMEDIATELY to pick up a black VCI... I was that "Pumped"..and went to the "mothership store" PACO such a cool place with tons of VCI-100's running all sorts of VDJ and lighting programs... incredible really.... EVERYONE SHOULD GO.. really...its an amazing place......the history room with the vinyl lathe for making your own vinyl...insane.. the old mixers...wow.... go go go... I don't regret that part.

Just saddened that I could not be a part of this.. the new mappings look cool...I guess I could sell my used black VCI unit on Ebay...and then buy a arcade model... but the buttons don't light up. (I love moores 3 unit one with light up buttons) .. for the time I have spent on this....I would have gladly spent an extra $400 to have my time and aggravation back.. bummed me out so much I haven't bought a song in weeks....

I can connect- but I can't see where to load thefirmware... It's as if I am using a different software package.
I click on the VCI-100SE fireware zip firmware package- and click on VCI-100 se fireware- that opens up in FDT

Then I select "configure flash project" Select the correct device (with USB power not connected and power off) Com 7( a port that only shows up when my device is connected) so it sees my serial to USB connection

I then connect USB power and switch on.. "connect to device" and I connect...yay...but...

But then I can not see that window to load the software to flash.. The video online is so blurry I can't read it- and it does not have the window that I see to flash on the video. I used all the updated links..

grrrr...All the fun is bring sucked out of my VCI at this point..Anyone want to flash my machine for me for $20? I live in Aspen Colorado- and would send it with a prepaid fedex return label.

I don't want to switch to serato..

- or ....even better... forget mailing the machine..

For Apple users. I have a 17" macbook pro... if someone wants to ichat me...and then I could let them see my screen- and using parallels... could this be done? I'd paypal someone instantly who can do this... I can get a copy of parallels....

Cheers for the helpful reply. I went home and tried another computer and had no problem, then tried the orginal computer, but using another USB slot and again no problems. So thanks so helping - my grey hair can hopefully go un-noticed again. 1.3 flashed on with no problems at all. I made sure I had the correct serial lead (i.e, non usb) before attempthing it. However 2 little queries.

1) Does 1.3 come on as default, or do I have to select 1.3 on boot up of the VCI100 (as I know you can switch between 1.2 and 1.3) Or what is a good test to make sure 1.3 is working? I actually dont know what the difference is in terms of functionality

2) Earth problem. Bit of a worry this one! I get a very little shock when touching the VCI 100 - I did not notice it at first because I have the new face plate (hiding the metal). Have I put it back together incorrectly? I have not checked whether the thing is earthed yet. Planning on doing that toevening .

I had loads of problems getting the firmware upgrade to work using a usb to serial converter. So i decided to do it the old fashioned way. I took back my usb to serial & traded it in for a serial to serial (male to female).

I have a laptop and its pretty budget new laptop with minimal functionality in terms of connections, haven't even got a SD slot. So i went into a internet cafe and explained the situation. they had loads of computers with serial connections.

Just follow all the steps on http://www.djranking s.com/2008/08/1...ware/#more-656 exactly and you will be sweet. usb to serial is not a good idea they run on completely different speeds.

good luck.

PopUp Order for the Basic FDT:
1- Device and Kernel
2- Communications Port
3- Device Settings
4- Connection Type
5- Programming Options (Finished)

After clicking finished you're brought back to "FDT Simple Interface" window.
In the "File Selection" fieldset there's the "Download File" radio selected.

If not already checked, check "User/Data Area" and click the arrow button on the right.
A menu will appear, choose "Browse..." and then select the firmware file to upload onto the VCI-100.

Press "Program Flash" once you are ready to flash the device.

Hey dereck, I am sorry you had trouble- we are happy to refund your costs at any time if your not happy. the firmware upgrade process is not a 100% sure thing and can have different results for each person, especially when using the USB to serial cables.

We provide the kits so people can at least have the option (for very little money) of improving their vci-100 without sending it to japan. Sorry you had trouble but I would recommend trying a serial to serial cable if possible- some of the usb adapters just dont work very well.
