Firmware FAQ and Upgrade Solutions
Firmware FAQ and Upgrade Solutions FAQ How do I update my firmware? Please visit this post to learn how to update your firmware: http://www.djranking s.com/2008/08/1...-100-firmware/ If you have problems please visit this thread: http://www.djranking s.com/community /sho...=7732#post7732 Which firmware version does your VCi-100 have? Version 1.1 the firmware with the "ramp up problem" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b2Y509VQVEQ the jog wheel touch sensor turns off when the wheel stops turning, not when you release your finger. Version 1.2 -VCI-100's with a green sticker on the back are firmware version 1.2 - this version solved the ramp up problem but still has several bugs including * the fourth FX buttons send out the same midi message as the right headphone cue button. Version 1.3 The firmware found in all VCi-100SE controllers that was designed by Ean Golden. You can tell if you have 1.3 by following these steps. 1) connect your vci-100 to a computer but dont start traktor. 2) Click the button that is at the top right hand corner of the left jog wheel (its next to the filter knob for deck A). 3) If this button's light toggles on and off then you have 1.3 (the same button on the right deck will not toggle on and off. Here are a few of the changes made in 1.3 general improvements: * Eliminated the problem where the 4th FX buttons trigger other buttons (cue) * added midi in functionality to the loop buttons * added a note on to the jog wheel in scroll mode performance: * turned the filter knobs into double knobs (0-127 on the left and right side) * added a "freeze function" to the bottom of each fader and top of the fx knobs. this sends out a 127 message only at the end of the movement * added inverted messages to the faders (this allows an effect to be turned on by turning the fader down- not possible otherwise) * added unique values to the FX buttons (these were used for direct FX selection- now added in Traktor Pro) Problems updating your firmware? first some basic rules:
Everything works but at the end you get the following message: Opening port 'COM3' ... Loading Comms DLL Loaded Comms DLL Error No 15060: Error while opening the port Error No 15026: Unable to open comms Error No 15061: Error while closing the port You have the wrong COM port selected. Each USB port has different COM address, so make sure you have the right one selected. COM 3 is usually a serial while 2, 4, 5 are usually one of the USB ports. Everything works but at the end you get the following message: OS: Windows XP [Admin] FDT API initialised: version 4, 02, 00, 008 Clock Frequency (External) = 24.0000MHz, Clock Mode = 0, CKM = 1, and CKP = N/A Connecting to device 'H8/3052F' on 'COM3' Configuration: 'BOOT Mode' connection - using emulated interface Opening port 'COM3' ... There was a also a report that this error was corrected when making sure the firmware kit is seated completely down on the board. This requires removal of the harness next to the header so it can sit down completely. if you must use a USB to Serial, read this If you are using a USB serial cable plug it in to a USB port Now run device manager, if you don't know how to do this follow this link. [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Device_Manager"]Device Manager - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia@@AMEPARAM@@/wiki/File:Vista_Device_Manager.png" class="image"><img alt="" src="http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/d/d7/Vista_Device_Manager.png/220px-Vista_Device_Manager.png"@@AMEPARAM@@en/thumb/d/d7/Vista_Device_Manager.png/220px-Vista_Device_Manager.png[/ame] Now expand the ports branch, (See thumbnail 1) If you are using a built in serial port its is most likely assigned to COM 1, Check that there are no ports with the same number, if another device is assigned the same COM port number you will have to change it to use another number. If you are using a USB serial cable then it will appear in the list called something like "Prolific USB-to-Serial Comm Port", if you are confused about which one it is remove your USB-serial cable from the USB port, then you should see that device disappear from the Ports tree. Now right-click and open the properties of the Port you are using, and the click the port setting tab. (See thumbnail 2) Check that your settings are the same as in thumbnail 2. If they are not change them. Now if you need to change the serial port number click the advanced button. (See thumbnail 3) You can now change the Com port number that is assigned to the serial port in the drop down menu. Select a number in the range of 2 - 8 that is not in use. Click ok in the advanced settings window, then ok in the properties window. If you are using a USB serial cable unplug it then plug it back in to the same USB port. Now repeat the instructions in Ean's video. You get a time out error Clock Frequency (External) = 24.0000MHz, Clock Mode = 0, CKM = 1, and CKP = N/A Connecting to device 'H8/3052F' on 'COM3' Configuration: 'BOOT Mode' connection - using emulated interface Opening port 'COM3' ... You can use this file to adjust the delays sent by FDT. Essentially, a USB connection is way quicker than a serial connection and as such, sometimes your connection will be too quick for the software. The connection gets ahead of the instructions and the instructions get lost resulting in time outs. So, back to FTDAdvancedSetup... go into this, you will see two boxes you can click on: "connection settings" and "configure serial port...". Click the "configure serial port..." box. In here, you will see a box "enable serial port delay fix". You want to make sure that's checked. Then where it says delay value, enter 1000 or something (1000 worked for me, you may need to go higher depending on the cable). Disregard where it says the lower the value the better, that doesn't really apply to us as we're just downloading the file, not doing live programming. This should fix all those time outs and connection errors when using a USB to serial adapter. After performing the set up steps and connecting the firmware header, the jog wheels still light up blue. When I touch them they turn red. this is the only thing that would indicate there is something physically wrong with the firmware kit.
If your unit will still not start up in boot mode (the unit is on but the wheels dont light up) then there is something wrong with the kit. Email us (service at djranking s.com) and we will send you a new one promptly. | |
Keeley Gobble 07.05.2010 | I used Windows Vista Home Premium 64bit with this cable: http://www.lindy.de/usb-seriell-rs23...lig/42811.html on Port 8. In the advanced Settings I set "enable serial port delay fix" with an value of 1000. Worked perfectly. |

Keeley Gobble 29.04.2010 | Hi, does anybody know if it is possible to do the fw-upgrade with Parallels running Windows XP on a mac? |
Deloris Boel 27.04.2010 | It's worth checking the soldering on the upgrade plate. I'd been battling with the 15024: Boot failed error message for hours. Tried USB to Serial cable, loads of different straight serial cables. I even dug out an old ADSL router with a console port on it to make sure I could get a serial connection through that. Turns out my upgrade plate had a blob of solder joining two of the pins on the top side of the plate together. Removed it with a soldering iron and it worked a treat. |
Genna Kuhlke 27.04.2010 | I picked up a startech DB 25M to DB 9F Serial Modem Cable, is this the same as a standard serial cable? No where does it say its a null modem cable. I also picked up a DB9 M to DB 9 M Gender Changer so I can plug the female end of the cord into the female DB 9 Chip. I also picked up a startech USB to DB 9 cord just in case option 1 didnt work. After about 4 hours I had to give up as both lead be to the infamous boot fail. Do I need different serial cords?? If so, anyplace online I can order it from? Any suggestions to a type of USB to DB 9 cord that worked? Anyone in the Calgary area that has done this upgrade??? Please Help!!! I need my VCI ready for a set next week!!! |
Adolf Hit 25.04.2010 | No you remove the update pcb |
Jennefer Reeves 25.04.2010 | This question might've been answered already but I can't seem to find it by searching so sorry if it has. Do you leave the firmware upgrade piece inside the VCI-100 once you're done loading the firmware? |
Adolf Hit 18.04.2010 | Def standard serial cables |

Jasmine Flitter 16.04.2010 | Hell, Hell, Hell, Heaven I just sucessfully updated my VCI-100(v1.2) to firmware 1.3 but it was a long road, I just point out all the pitfalls i made, even thou I am pretty confident with computer gear . I live in Germany so the USB Adapter is a local thing but its fine (Hama USB- Serial Konverter RS232 Nr. 00 053325) bought at the big Discount Electronic market for easy returning it "Media Markt". Gear: Mac Pro Windows 7 64Bit (two front USB), Hama USB Converter, Long 5 m USB Cable for Power. Firtsly I followed the steps but got Received immediate response from device: 0x55 Errors then i got Error No 15024: Boot failed from every single cable and Inition method i could believe of. I also tried several COM Ports (1,2,4,7) but nothing changed After about 20 attempts in different configurations, I realized that i can't get it to work and moved on to my Laptop. Gear: Laptop WinXP SP3 Hama USB Converter, Long 5 m USB Cable for Power (plugged into the Mac). I tried about 10 Configs and believed that had a bad contact on my Firmware kit (which was not) and startet to resolder some conections also on the RS232 plug (which i realized where blank intentionally). I was getting really pissed of at this time as i realized that some lights where sometimes on on the VCI (should be off in boot mode) so i pressed and loosened the conector several times and everytime I swithced it on the Windows 7 (the mac) was activating the USB device and lighting up the buttons. (the Adapter was still on the Laptop i was to lazy to move the power USB Cable to the laptop too) Then I relized I have to get this thing into a proper boot mode bfore i can do anything usefull, and as a final solution I used the good cable from the midi fighter on the Laptop for the power, and very important! I held the VCI Vertical ! not that that makes any sense but it prevents that any buttons are pressed i believe this was my problem that touching the joogwheels or any of the other buttons (from the pillow) prevented a propper boot mode. worked on the first time after the boot mode was initialized vertically. Just my to Cents. Short Version: Hama USB- Serial Konverter RS232 Nr. 00 053325 is fine dont forget the driver Use a short USB cable don't press any buttons while engaging boot mode with the power swith use the 1000 ms sec delay feature ... (read the other htreads to understand this) thanks ... I am off beatjuggling |
Elnora Wisegarver 11.04.2010 | I got my chip and serial cable and one try it worked like a charm just like in video thank you Ean now im off to load the tsi. |
Janeen Kansteiner 10.04.2010 | OK.... after a few frustrating hours i got it working, not quite sure what i did but i believe this may have helped. If you have had to change COM port numbers etc, after settings have been changed then right click on the port you have just adjusted and click scan for hardware changes. That seemed to work for me Windows XP SP3/ Silver 1.1 Firmware VCI-100 Thanks for the awesome product |
Janeen Kansteiner 10.04.2010 | I recieved my upgrade kit yesterday and have been trying to flash the firmware over with a USB to serial but i always get the message below. I have checked the COM Port number etc. I have adjusted the delay to 1000 and other numbers above but no luck. I believe i have gone over everything in the solutions thread. Please help! Mack Rehberger 18.01.2010 | Just for everyone's information. Make sure you don't have another sync program running. I had something like windows activesync which also uses COM1 port. After i turned that off it would upgrade, else i got the error that it couldn't open up com ports. |
Mack Rehberger 15.01.2010 | Please help, I'm using a serial to serial cable but it won't upgrade. It says eroor opening the port, unable to open comms and error whie closing the port. I use COM1 port and it's the only com port i can choose. I have followed eans steps precisely but it won't work. |

Evonne Winkeler 14.01.2010 | SO I got the chip in the mail and followed instructions of the video and came up with the same 15024 failed to boot, but than it started recognizing my serial port and now all I get is error 15005: Com 3: read time out I couldn't get past this so I tried just closing up the VCI and just leaving it as is and now it won't start. Please tell me my VCI didn't die. I followed instructions exactly. I am using a proper serial to usb cable. What do I do. Please help as I can't afford for my vci to be down. I'm freaking out please help. Thanks! |
Heidi Alred 12.12.2009 | Andi, have you installed the drivers for your Serial-to-USB cable? I used one with Windows Vista and the upgrade went smooth with no problems. However, I had to install drivers for the cable when I first plugged it into my laptop. There's a CD that came with the cable but you can also make Windows search for it online, that's what I did. After it installed the drivers, the cable was seen as COM4 by Windows, and it's the port that I used for upgrading. I believe somewhere in Ean's instructions it says COM port must be greater than 3 if you're using a USB connection - from what it looks like you're trying to do it through COM3, which is what may be causing that error. Hope that helps, good luck |
Gwenda Legendre 12.12.2009 | Hello Andi. Did you see this portion of Ean's post? Leeann Vanbrunt 12.10.2009 | what kinde of software i have to use to upgrade my vci 100 silver's firmware to 1.3 ?? Anybody please help. |
Ollie Hubschman 14.09.2009 | hhmmm i dont know much about window pc's but isnt COM1 only used for a serial port ? i did read on here somewhere that if you are using a USB to serial then you should use a port number of above COM3 but i could be wrong |
Gregory Finely 14.09.2009 | Well for the last hour been trying to get my pc to recognise the USB device but each time i plug in the USB it fails and is followed with an error basically it's not installing the midi software, and the firmware software tool can't see the COM1, so it looks like I will have to pick up a serial to serial cable and try this instead :/ |
Elva Giambanco 04.06.2009 | I've been trying to update the firmware on my VCI-100, and I can't seem to get the VCI into boot mode. I've seated the firmware update module firmly into the correct slot, and removed the wire as shown, and connected two different serial cables into the onboard serial ports of two different computers, but whenever I switch the VCI on ready to flash it, all of the lights come on as normal, and when I touch the platter it turns red- so meaning that the VCI hasn't gone into the boot mode necessary to program the flash. I emailed service at djranking s.com on monday but haven't heard anything back yet- I'd really like to get this sorted as soon as possible! |
Dj aziz mastouri 12.04.2009 | Error No 15024: Boot failed and i'm using serial to serial from desk top to vci. what gives!!! |
Lester Bruker 29.03.2009 | ok i got it im not sure exactly why, just happy i dont to do that everyday :P thanks~! |
Lester Bruker 29.03.2009 | ok i made some progress, now i can connect to the vci and boot does not fail anymore. but i got some time out error. i followed the indications and tried to change the delay but right now when i add delay the boot fails again. as soon as i remove any delays boot is fine, but time out error ive been on this for 3 hours and this is really getting on my nerves now |
Lester Bruker 28.03.2009 | thank you for your reply! i have tried to remove the harness and repeat the same process, i tried 2 diff com port and so far has been unsuccessful the machine is in boot mode im pretty sure about that so no hardware issue. |
Earnest Spink 28.03.2009 | Hi Julien, the Cable Harness needs to stay unplugged until you have finished flashing/upgrading your firmware. So with the that one cable harness unplugged - the upgrade kit fits like a charm. After the successful update, remove the upgrade connector (kit) and plug that one harness back into the socket. Put your VCI back together, load a matching *.tks or *.tsi file and enjoy the greatness, which Ean and his time have provided! Thsi fixes at least one of your problems... |
Lester Bruker 28.03.2009 | hi there i am using a usb to serial cable for firmware update, and had the boot failed issue. ive tried to change the com port between 2, 4, 5, 6 and no chance at all... boot fails all the time i am also confused about the step where u remove for a second only one cable harness and put it back. the firmware kit does not fully slide in when this harness is on is that normal? what is the next step? thanks cheers julien |
Penni Rigor 09.03.2009 | Does anyone have a link to a USB to serial cable they have got to work?[/QUOTE] I'll re-ask this question, as I've been unable to locate it in the threads. Just ordered my upgrade kit and want to be sure of what has worked best for everyone else. Thanks. |
Rtnis m 23.02.2009 | Just to add, if your using serial cables make sure it's a null modem serial cable. |
Wynona Forand 19.02.2009 | I have tried two different USB to serial cables with no success and I cant find anyone with a old enough computer with a serial port Does anyone have a link to a USB to serial cable they have got to work? |
DjMAX MONTANA 13.11.2008 | I had the same issue....at this step, the vci has to be plugged in via USB, as well as the USB-serial connector...I forgot to plug in the unit. Then I had to go back, and switch the com port to com6 on my computer when I got this message again. Finally, it worked. good luck. |
