Ikea desk mods...

Hey all, I'm looking at buying a couple of Ikea pieces and sling them together to make a suarve desk for various gear and future purchases!

I was believeing something along the lines of this...

It's basically one of these on it's side:

With this one on top:

However, I'm not sure if it'll be high enough for my needs. As he has his TT's in a flight case which obviously raises them up somewhat. I only have an Omni Control but plan on upgrading to the S4 and some Rokit 5 G2s too in the future. I'm 5"11 so I'm believeing it might be a bit too low for me?

Does anyone have any ideas or desks they've done themselves?

My ikea desk is almost identical, but instead of screwing the top to the expedit I just pencilled in the position then attached wooden lugs to the bottom. That way there are no screws showing on top and no chance of ripping out bits of crappy expedit cardboard! It's totally secure, especially with a full technics setup on top.

Screw the legs to the table top at the back (holes are pre-drilled - easy!), and then screw the table top to the expedit 4x2 book shelf.

The height is a tiny bit off (I'm 6'2"), but I'm gonna add a second table top (I have one lying around) to bring the decks up to the correct height.

Perfect for a battle set up (space for an uberstand and a magma stand, and a couple of external hard drives), and plenty of room behind/below it for hiding cables/surge protectors, etc... Stable as hell. No jumping needles.

I'll get a photo up soon, but mine has got 2xTechnics 1200's, 1xDDM4000, 2 laptops (one on an uberstand, one on a magma style stand), a launchpad, a UC-33e, a UC-16, and some cheap 5.1 speakers (the sub is in one of the cavities in the expedit).

I used two expedites side by side to get the width in the desk, looking for a way to hide the cable now or might make some short or buy a snake RCA for my NI Audio10DJ.

The Lack shelf isn't actually angled (It thought it would be too, it's just the legs that are angled)

I'm actually now looking to prop everything at an angle except for the laptop so might make a custom dual X1 case angled up and maybe something for Maschine as well.

also eyeing of either the K2 or CNTRL

I used the angled CAPITA legs and the large bolt wasn't long enough to let the nuts attach on the other side, i probably would have used something else if I knew this before hand (i don't believe it was in the article). They seem secure enough I also stuck wood glue on either end to make sure.

Maybe some of you already read it. But here's a link to an article on DJTT from oct. 2011.

Planning on making one myself. Starting at the end of this month.

Cheers!

you cant see the screws? did you cover them up or is it just the angle

The table top is screwed through to the expedit using 4" screws around the perimeter - that's the only place on the expedit that isn't hollow!

The legs are adjustable, so once the table top is fixed, you can screw the legs to the table top and adjust them to the right length.

Super stable.

I believe the wall shelf is your best bet, anyway the legs aren't overly expensive and if they don't fit you could use them as monitor stands instead. It might just fit if you push the CDJs and mixer as close to you as possible

hmmm. I want to put my monitors and laptop on the shelf and keep my CDJ's, Mixer and X1 on the Expedit. I stil have space on the Expedit after having my gear on it so was hoping I could fit the legs either side of the mixer. Now I'm doubting myself.

Is it the Lack shelf you have that's got the metal fixings allowing you to put it straight to the wall? that might be my best option.

Appreciate your help dude.

I don't believe it will make a difference, i did it that way just so i could fit more underneath it, which would become even more relevant if you used only one table. Actually I just had a look and there's no room for the capita legs if you want to use Vinyl/CDJs and a mixer, there's about an inch of space behind. So you would have to rig something underneath the rear of the expedite shelf that you could attach the capita legs to.

What do you want/need to put on them?

The other thing which i didn't realise is that the shelf has this pullout metal part which you can attach straight to the wall. I wouldn't be able to as I rent where i am, but it would look pretty sweet if you had the expedite with your decks and mixer and your controllers on the shelf above, that way you would have more room

Yeh I dont have the space or the money to use 2 Expedits so am hoping 1 will still give me enough space.

I know the shelf isn't angled but I see from your vid that you angled the Capita legs inwards I was planning on angling them outwards away from the Expedit but not sure if this will affect stability.

How much are those Ikea fellas? DJ stands are bloody expensive these days... I managed to snag one for free a few years back but it's only wide enough for 2x1210's and a 3 channel mixer.... nowhere for CDJ's to go so I need to upgrade soon...

EDIT: Woops. Just got it,

Hey,

I was planning on building this over my christmas break, but before i started, i just wanted to know if 1 expedit is thick enough to have TT's in battle position? I'm using Stanton T.80's. Thanks!

Well, one of the reasons people tend to go for a double expedit, is because of the space that is taken by the shelf itself.
Capita stands are only available with a height of 10 or 15 cms if I am correct. So please look at the dimensions you can and will use.

What you could also go for, when not touching the max weight allowance of 15Kg(Max. load 18-44 lbs), is the Ikea L

Hi Guys,

I've currently got an Expedit as my Dj desk. The Pics are here http://www.djranking s.com/community /sho...?t=17&page=454

I want to put a shelf above it to put my laptop and speakers on using the angled Capita legs. Does anyone know if this will work ok and still give me plenty of room underneath for my CDJ's and mixer and whether the balance of the unit will be ok??

I have seen in some instances people have put 2 Expedit's together but i'm limited on space and cash so want to try and avoid this if poss.

Appreciate your advise.

Pretty easy to do. Just screw the legs onto two of the shelf corners. Then mount the shelf to the wall at the right hight above the expedit, and your done.
