A little technique I've been messing with:

Cool ... or no?

I KNOW! It's like firing off lazers into the crowd! And if executed properly (my video was off the cuff and sloppy) the crowd will get it ... and respond!! Gotta use this sparingly, tho ... and it's FAR from automatic and can sound like a train wreck very easily.

I have the spectrum colors in Traktor set to blue and white. You don't wanna use this method to scratch on areas of the track that are solid blue (dense bass presence) .. stick to the mid tones and higher frequencies and watch out for the transients in the snare ... they can be tough to manage via this technique.

GLAD you found this useful!

MUCH LOVE, Jackie Boy! Thanks for watching. I'll post another video soon, as I'm adding some more tweaks to the technique .. based on some suggestions others made in this post. IT'S GONNA BE SICK .. I promise.

Didn't fully grasp that synthet1c made the same suggestion! YOU GUYS ROCK!

Now that is an awesome idea!! That would free up the other (activating) hand for more tweakage!! THANKS for the reply!!

To be honest .. I don't want to learn to scratch. I'm primarily focused on producing. But last summer (thanks to personal relationships) had a few venue owners request me .. knowing that I'm not technically a DJ. So I went after it ... And thanks to my production background was able to quickly implement various effects into my sets for transitions and what not. The experience was great ... and I'm continuing to build on what I'm offering.

So far I've debut'ed my "gate scratch" technique a couple of times VERY sparingly throughout the sets ... and was actually complimented (by patrons) each time I dropped it. One guy was like "You're awesome!! It's good to hear DJ's that still scratch!!" ... I laughed inside.

To each his own ... I guess. I'm constantly looking for ways to manipulate the (well selected) tunes I play, to keep things interesting ... And this is just one technique of an ever growing skill set.

Thanks for the feedback.

Then why not put the time in and learn to scratch? Honest opinion --- legit scratching sounds 100 times better. Even the few platter movements Zabiela did with the CDJ sounded better than what he could do with the EFX-1000. I believe it sounds like the a lazy way to replicate scratching. Not trying to sound like a jerk, but if I heard a DJ scratching at a club, then I heard this...it wouldn't compare. Check out this vid of a dude on a VCI-300. There's just certain sounds that cutting with a crossfader that you can't replicate with a button and knob.

@Culture - THANKS for checking this out! I probably could have chosen a better name for the subject of the post but ... admittedly ... I chose it defensively, believeing I would get flamed here for such a concept.

In my opinion ... It's about using the tools in front of you to the best of your ability ... taking risks (where applicable) ... And letting the crowd decide.

AWESOME! I'm definitely not done tweaking. I just haven't reintegrated my launchpad into my setup ... with which I plan to setup up more controls for an even better effect / sound.

I'm liking Zabiela more and more w/ the videos you guys have recommended.

I used to use my EFX1000, but when I went digital I could no longer route it into the mix :'(

Thanks for the feedback! And by all means ... learn away, my friend.

I'm just tweaking my unit ... and sharing results. I used to be decent on turntables .. but let it go. Picked up the S2 last spring and started playing out ... been winging it ... having fun ever since.
