LAUNCHPAD mapping 4 decks 4 traktor (w/ leds)
Posted on: 11.12.2009 by Jay Mcelhenny
So, I bought a launchpad because i wanted all those buttons, for hot cues, and other such fun.... plus the fact that you could get LED feedback was auh sum!

but damn if that thing was difficult to figure out!!!

first, its meant to play with ableton. Anything else requires novation's automap which is a pain to use with traktor. I thought i was bound by this marriage believeing that the only way to get midi messages from launchpad to other softwware, mainly traktor, was while the automap server was running. Needless to say, that whole thing was terrible. But then i noticed something in traktor's midi controller setup......

if you select "general midi" and choose "launchpad" for in/out ports guess what? you can send midi messages directly from launchpad to traktor like any other controller. Then its all a matter of figuring out what you want to do.

I have searched the web and all my searches ended up with results = 0. I couldn't find a good explanation, nor a fully mapped out launchpad, specially nothing complete with responsive LEDs (but i knew it was possible cause i saw a youtube vid of some dude doing such stuff). So after many hours of reading, testing, configuring, etc... i got my launchpad to work. Not sure i'll keep this mapping entirely, but for now, its cool to see that what i put on paper actually works in practice.

So first off, here's my setup so if you have something similar, you can try it out and see if it works:
- MacBook 13" (os x 10.5)
- traktor pro
- novation launchpad

that's it as far as this particular experiment goes. I don't really have the resources nor time to try the different combinations of operating systems, drivers, and traktor versions, but if anyone wants to give this a go for other setups, please please do so and share your feedback. I'm sure i'm not the only one who would like to know more about this.

There are some gotcha's to all this:

1. you don't have to run automap (which is not really a gotcha but a note)
2. I'm not sure if launchpad is meant to run the way i've done it, but whatever, it works for me now and seems stable
3. i'm by no means a midi expert nor programmer and i'm still learning a lot
4. i don't guarantee this will work, but if it does and people like it, auh sum!

Here is a detailed view of the mapping:
MAPPING-VIEW (description in caption)

So here's what you have to do:

1. download the tsi files i have created (4 total, 1 for each deck. I don't like flipping through huge mapping files in the small traktor window, sorry)

A-Deck TSI [download]
B-Deck TSI [download]
C-Deck TSI [download]
D-Deck TSI [download]

2. open traktor first and import the files.
3. make sure that for each mapping file, launchpad is selected as in/out ports. (not sure if the mapping files do this automagically)
4. once imported, close traktor
5. connect your launchpad via usb (all LEDs will/should be off)
6. open traktor
7. once its ready to receive midi, click on all the buttons and it will light them up according to their current state. It should look like this photo:
INITIALIZATION PICTURE (description in caption)

Here are some other photos with explanations in the captions:
HOTCUE STATES PICTURE (description in caption)
FULLY LOADED PICTURE (description in caption)

I don't have a complete understanding still of some of the concepts and discovered some on a fluke. However, i will say this, what i'm really hoping for is that some of you see what i did (hopefully it works on your setup) and can play around with it more. Also, please leave any feedback as to what you believe or suggestions or anything. I'll try to help out as much as i can since i'm usually pretty busy (i'm surprised i even got this going). Anyhow, thanks again...

the only major changes from ejac's .tsi files are as follows:

-Mapped deck D (he may not use it, but I do ^_^)
-Holding Shift (Session button on launchapd) and pressing each deck's play button will focus that deck
-Holding shift will turn the hotcue buttons into delete buttons for the cuepoints, allowing you to delete your hotcues on the fly. (the LEDs also blink off instantly, so it's visually intuitive)

The hotcue delete mappings are in the control .tsi, so in order for it to work, you must install all 5 .tsi files.

It doesn't completely solve the problem, but it sure works a lot better now.
The audio glitches are substantially less hearable compared to when you normally load a song into a deck & all the hotcue-leds go on.

So:

1. Download this rar file (it contains the bome's midi translator file & a tsi file for traktor)

2. Install Midi-Yoke (it's free)

3. Install Bome's Midi translator (it's not free, but there are "other" ways to get it )

4. Delete all hotcue led-outputs you have for your launchpad in your existing mapping in Traktor.

5. Import the tsi file & in the device "Launchpad_Hotcue_Leds", select "none" for your Midi input & "Midi Yoke 1" for your Midi output

6. Open Bome's Midi Translator, open the .bmtp file included in the rar.

7. Select "Midi Yoke 1" as your Midi input & "Launchpad" as your Midi output on the top menu.

What it basicly does is:

When you load a song into a deck in Traktor, it sends all the hotcue-led-outputs to Midi Yoke 1. Bome's catches these signals and delays them all by 300ms. It then sends the delayed signals to your Launchpad. You'll see that when you load a song into a deck, the hotcues will be delayed as said before.

I'll say it again: It doesn't completely solve the problem since the Output messages in Traktor are still being sent at the same time, but it improves the glitch-problem substantially.

PS: The tsi file included only changes the led-outputs for the hotcues, it doesn't add any other mappings. So remember that you only delete the hotcue-outputs you already have!

PS2: The pads I choose for the hotcues are these, if you want them to light up somewhere else, you'll have to change the bome's file yourself. The leds for the hotcues light up FULL red for decks A & C and DIMMED red for decks B & D. I did this so you could see more easily what deck you're using on the LP. Again, if you want this in another color, just change it yourself

I've actually wrote an app to fix that problem. The final release will be coming out soon, but here's a link to the beta thread....

here are the raw note+cc's (non rotated) in case any use http://midimasher.djism.com/lua/devices/launchpad.lua

and here's all the colours i could work out: http://midimasher.djism.com/lua/lib/launchpad.lua

you also have access to all those flashing/blinking colors if u somehow send (one time) CC000 with a value of 40 first to your lp - assuming you're not using automap

I'm sorry if the answer is already in the thread, but has anyone made a picture of the LED outputs MIDI notes on the launchpad? I'd like to do my own mapping but going through all the midi outs is a pain, just thought if someone has made the work for me... :-P Or if you know a way to change the LED color in automap (all goes to red for me, kinda sucks).

I've had a LaunchPad sitting around for a long time - I bought it just for Traktor, but took forever to try setting it up.

[SORRY ! I didn't spot all the replies on this thread - for some reason, the browser stopped loading the page completely so I didn't see all the other pages listed at the end! My question was answered on page 2 ]

I followed the steps suggested, but what I have found is that after importing each TSI, only the most recent import takes hold. So if I import Deck A, it works on deck A. I import deck B's TSI and deck B works, but deck A no longer does. The controller manager only shows one entry for Launchpad.

If anyone can help me, that would be fab

Thanks!

This is awsome nice job!!!!! I just got this to work with traktor pro S4 software and it works amazingly!! It would be sweet if the buttons on the side controlled pre-saved effects.. maybe that is something i will work on adding to the mapping.. but overall very awesome it will deff add something to my performance with the S4

I'm so sick of traktor! Since 4 hours I'm trying to map two different Midi-Output Modes to a Launchpad Button, but there's no way to achieve this. I already worked with modifiers, which send an output to bomes which than activates a timer for a new midi-message, in order to overcome Traktors Limits. The worst: Even the new Version (Traktor 2) forces you to work in this little preference window. I'm really annoyed!!!

My goal was to get reflect the new "Slot State" and the "Slot Mute/Unmute" on one single button:

Amber Color = Sample Slot Playing
Green Color = Sample Slot Not Playing
Red Color = Sample Slot Playing but Muted
No Color = No Sample loaded

This would be perfect in conjunction with the midi-command "Sample Play". I nearly found a solution until I realized that the green color is only lightning when the sample slot is not unmuted before stoping it otherwise it remains amber.

Did someone managed to map two different Midi Outputs to a LED with different colors?

I do achieved to get proper feedback for the Hotcues and Loops, because I ticked the "blend" option in traktor and converted the different velocities of the output in bomes.

hi all,

midi-mapping newb here so be kind! I believe I am going to get a launchpad to use with ableton but I also want to use it with my traktor set=up.

currently i use traktor pro and numark omnicontrol and i want to use the launchpad to fire off hot cues/loops (1/4, 1/2, 1, 2, 4 ,8 16,32).

ideally i would like to use the first two horizontal lines for 8 hot cues on a 2 deck set up and the next 2 horzontal lines for the loops.

i know how to map the buttons but its the LEDs that i have no clue how to set up, i have read through the thread and it still makes no sense how to do it

if some kind soul could put an example up of how to set up one of the buttons with LEDS i would really appreciate it. ideally i would like the top 2 rows to be red (if there is a hot cue) or no LED if no hot cues are loaded. for the loops i would like them to be on and green all of the time and for it to flash green when i select a loop so i know what size loop i am using.

sorry again if this is a really newb question!

I'm having a similar problem here, except I'm using a heavily modified version of the Midi Fighter deckalized mapping ported to the launchpad, which I found on this community . I've been troubleshooting this for weeks, I can't believe traktor can have such a glaring bug. I've got a brand new lenovo ideapad z560 pc, core i5, 4gb ram. Just purchased a usb 3.0 expresscard because I thought it might help the problem, which it did not. Neither did using a powered usb hub. I believe it's caused my a number of factors, obviously slow LED's shouldn't cause audio glitches in traktor, but also the LED's are slow in other programs as well, like ableton (but thankfully this does not cause audio problems, just slow LED's). I've had major problems with believes like MLR running in max4live not lighting LED's correctly, leaving ones lit when there should not be, etc. I have none of these problems on my desktop computer, which has a slower processor, older soundcard, etc. I've read the latency might be caused by IRQ sharing, but there's really no way to change what IRQ your usb ports use.

The best solution I've found so far is using Midi-ox to figure out what notes are being sent to the launchpad and removing the unnecessary ones. In my mapping I don't have lights for individual hot cues, so I've got the same amount of midi data output being sent to other midi controller LED's, and I only have problems when the output to the launchpad is enabled, even if it's going through a secondary program like midi ox or bome's. Apparently if you update your launchpad to beta drivers from this thread it can slightly improve the speed. Novation-Launchpad.com Forum Thread

[edit] I just e-mailed Novation about this issue and to see if there are any updates with the beta drivers (the ones on that thread are months old now). I'll post again if I find anything out.

I recently purchased a copy of bomes midi translator in order to improve the functions of my novation launchpad. I'm using it as a interface for controlling the loops of Traktor. Here's the deal: I want to change the colors of the same button according to the hotcue state. For example: if I store a simple "cue" it should light up red and if I store a "loop" it should light up "green". Sadly Traktor doesnt know how to handle to MIDI-OUT messages which are targeting the same note.

After hours of pondering I found a solotion which breaks up the outgoing MIDI-Message "hotcue1 state" in two seperate Midi-Messages and reroute it to Traktor. From there the messages will be picked up from two "Modifier #1" In-Messages. One will change the "modifier#1" value to "1" (when the cue is stored) and the other one will change the "modifier#1" value to "0" (when the cue is deleted). Then there is another "Modifier#1" Out-Message which finally lights up the button according to the value (min = 12 / max = 15). This is only working up if the "hotcue state" is a "cue", so I repeated the steps if the "hotcue state" is a "loop".

Here's my problem: If I continue to map the messages like this there will be not enought Modifiers to reflect 8 hotcue states (not even 4 hotcue state), since every hotcue is consuming two Modifiers. Traktor only allow 8 Modifiers which are all global. As soon as I would store hotcue states on another deck, they would overwrite the old Modifier values.

Is there a solution which works with variables from Bomes or is there a logical error in my solution?

Here are the files:

Traktor's TSI: http://db.tt/Q5oa3Y6
Bome's bmtp: http://db.tt/I089AqF

Here are the "midi range" values for the led options in traktor:

12 = off
13 = red low
14 = red mid
15 = red high
28 = green low
44 = green mid
60 = green high
29 = amber low
46 = amber mid
63 = amber high

And the "controller range" values:

-1 = no mapping
0 = Cue
1 = Fade In
2 = Fade Out
3 = Load
4 = Grid
5 = Loop

I really appreciate help.
