I just remembered that Vestax/Tascam already did that. Kinda. It wasn't time code, it was this thing that tracked the record kinda like how mouse balls used to work before everyone went optical.

They had connections to some rackmount CD players, the Vestax CDX-05, and the Mixwell CD-DJ1. I used one of the mixwell things once with just a slipmat and was really impressed

Lol.

The first time I did it with Traktor, I felt proud. But i had been on Ableton for a while, hadn't touched decks in over a year, and had never even pretended to try to beat match manually with a controller. It still worked, but I was astonished.

I certainly don't believe it's absolutely necessary to be able to do it manually depending on your goals, your gear , and where you are in your career. The only thing I don't get is the resistance to learning it.

It's really not that hard. Any of the old DJF guys remember those videos of Marc's kid doing it

^^^ that tracking ball made so much more sense, no more wear for both record and needles.

I lost count myself. Like I always say, many will autosync and beatgrid, few will be DJs. Let them be noobs for life as it only contributes to make the real DJs look better.

It's not really a need thing, but why not have the option?

Yes, there are times where I believe zoomed waveforms are useful and like having the option of looking at them. You have them currently with a laptop connected running rekordbox but it would be better to just put them on the player and have an option to toggle between the browser and zoomed waveforms. It wouldn't take away from anything and seems pretty doable.

Not that I'm into pioneer mixers, but to go along with it the next DJM-2000 style mixer would have a center LCD screen angled at the top that could show vertical or horizontal scrolling SSL style waveforms for each player through ethernet, you could have a larger file browser and cover art browser and load tracks through the mixer, and could do a lot of the rekordbox stuff right on the mixer.

I guess I would just like to see options on an $1900 player. All the tech is already there with quantized songs with rekordbox and a phase meter could be useful on a 3-4 CDJ setup.

Really though that's not that important and I mainly just want to see zoomed scrolling style waveforms in the browser area. The 2000 is setup for them perfectly and if only they had a button to toggle between the browser and zoomed waveforms and maybe use the browse encoder to zoom in or out- if nothing else than to see the detail of a loop when it is engaged.

it can be kinda hard...when you're using slow southern rap, T.I or some shit. but even then it's more a matter of the beat structure being different rather than difficulty matching tempo, it can sound weird.
