Reloop or Vestax ... I know it's been asked before
Reloop or Vestax ... I know it's been asked before Posted on: 30.04.2009 by Yong Marcoe Hi everyone ...I'm on the edge of buying a new controller (currently working with Traktor 3.4 and an X Sessions Pro). since they don't sell VCI 100's here anymore (don't ask me why) I have to buy it overseas. However, they do sell (and recommend) the new reloop digital jockey. Now, I've read the all the threads available, but most are quite old .... So, quick bottom-line advice from all of you gear heads out there (bare in mind, I already have a sound card, I'm upgrading to Pro and I play mostly house and balearic kinda stuff) Thanks a bunch Ariel aka Little Papa | |
Shaunta Swedin 11.08.2009 | My first turntable was a reloop. What fun memories Basically you needed to glue your hand to the pitch fader and constantly Re-Pitch (not Re-Loop) your record or else all was lost. Try to adapt this technique to a Technics and you'll wind up wrecking every mix Also...they guys working there are real hoots. And I've been to the M |

Tonie Dibbs 09.02.2010 | Yeah, you need to really bug Support if you want the to actually address your issues, as they tend to slack a bit. I believe I've heard someone say they're all hippies. If you just want a controller to dj using 2 decks, FX and loops, this is a no-brainer. Go out and get it now. If you're really into 4deck beat juggling... you're in for a bit of work and some midi remapping. Overall, I am still quite pleased with the unit. |
Bridget Zdunek 08.02.2010 | Zgomot, thanks for the review! Being in the position of seriously debating getting the DJ2 IE myself, can you add anything to your initial review after having used it for a bit? Thanks |
Tonie Dibbs 28.12.2009 | First of all, hello everyone at DJTT, this is my first post but I have been lurking unregistered for a while. I have a Reloop Digital Jockey 2 Interface Edition for about a week now and if anyone's still interested, here's my initial impressions. Firstly, I haven't been able to do a proper test as I cut the tip off my right hand's middle finger (my main mixing finger as Ali G put it) so you can imagine I haven't been in my best shape the last week. Still, here's what I believe so far. My previous controller was a Behringer BCD2000 and I don't believe I'm overstating things saying that even a toaster would have been a worthwhile upgrade. I am sorry I can't compare it to the VCI-100, as I never tried it, but I thoroughly and sincerely hate it's looks and that alone made me look for a different controller. What first struck me is the weight and the overall build quality. It feel sturdy and not cheap and plasticky (like the BCD2000). It's quite heavy and has very large rubber feet so it won't glide on my desk like the BCD did. Some of then knobs, ie the pushable rotary encoders do feel a bit wiggly but I don't believe I'll have any issues with them. The buttons are solid and make a nice click when pushed. The jog wheels are fantastic imo. They have rubber edges and just feel great when used. I get the feeling I'm using a CDJ100 and that can only be a good thing. You can use them to pitchbend, search through a track, scratch, control dry/wet param of effects, and even browse (open close folders too) through your library and all these right out of the box. the have a bit of inertia when turned, something that I find quite nice. The interface Edition, which I have features touch sensitive jogs, which when in scratch mode instantly stops the track when touched. The faders have a nice steady glide and feel good when used, a lot like on PRO DJ mixers. The SHIFT options makes it real easy to control 4 decks in Traktor, but contrary to how it's advertised, certain workarounds and tweaks are in order before you can safely say you can control 4 decks. This is my single and biggest gripe with the product. SHIFT functionality is less than what I expected. Official support regarding this issue is almost inexistant. For instance, critical things like CUE monitoring for decks C & D require a bit of fiddling around with mapping before being able to use them. Sound quality is nothing to write home about at a very standard 16bit/48kHz but I found it was quite decent. There are several updates to firmware, asio drivers, and mappings, all available on the official community s all freely downloadable. To conclude, after being overly hyped about this unit before I even ordered it, to my initial disappointment with support and the product being not exactly as OUT-OF-THE-BOX as advertised I can safely say I am now terribly happy with it. Build quality is great, functionality is very good. Hope you find this quasi-review usefull. |

Brandon Krugger 08.06.2009 | No, I decided to wait a bit more because I'm also looking for a new mixer and found a good deal at ebay, I'm not in a hurry since I got my DJ2. |
Shawana Tjon 08.06.2009 | pepehouse - very interested in a Reloop, have you got one yet? |

Lenora Brunett 03.06.2009 | that's a good choice, I would have done the same if I was not in a hurry to get my dj controller. And if you're not really into midi programming stuff, indeed the reloop 2 will be perfect for traktor PRO (even if it is also really good for midi geeks, because the midi implementation is far much better than the vci's) you can get it right now here for 249 euros (controller edition) : http://www.dj-deals.de/lshop,showdet...roller_dj,.htm tell us when you get it !!! cheers |
Brandon Krugger 02.06.2009 | I believe I'll wait for the Reloop to be released, which is announced for this month it has some features that the Vextax doesn't, like the brownse knob or a button for maximizing the brownser or even a pair of buttons for opening and closing folders, of course you can map the VCI to do this but I'm not that geek, I'm just a DJ and I want to spend my time with the music not programming a controller to do things that it should do from factory. Also I don't believe the quality of Reloop is bad, looks good and is not very cheap like Beringher for example. |
Lenora Brunett 01.06.2009 | Well I can't really tell that the vestax is better build than the reloop, I don't own the reloop, and the 2 is not reviewed for now... The reloop IS a good choice, and has several options and useful features that the vestax doesn't. and yes it comes with traktor (pro) LE, and a tsi file that totally fits the gear to the soft. I would have gone for the reloop if the 2 was already released and reviewed. Now I have the VCI and it's great. I would be also really pleased with the reloop for sure. --- for the upgrade question, I just saw that lots of users were not happy with T pro, and were waiting for the 1.2. upgrade to fix some bugs and make stuff better... that's why I was interested by the 60 euros T3 licence someone can sell to me... I'll wait for the Tpro 1.2 to be released, traktor LE is fine for me now, enough to begin to LEARN DJing !!! lol Thanks and cheers to all |

Lenora Brunett 01.06.2009 | timmychimp : I have now my black vci since one week, and it's extremely pleasant to use. The jogs are cream, heavy, solid, and really pleasant to use. I've got traktor LE for now, so I'm not able to reconfigure the midi assignements, but as soon as I can I'll upgrade to traktor 3 or traktor pro, and then I'll use the jogs to browse (you can have the left one for directories browsing and the right one for tracks browsing withtin a directory). there are lots of TKS files downloadable here and there, and it seems relatively easy to do it by yourself. My first impressions were given with a vci + traktor LE + TKS file provided with the soft and gear. This tks file is not really good, so my impressions are. But I'm sure when I'll be able to make my own midi assignements... then I'll totally love my vci. for now, what I don't love, is... well... traktor LE You didn't do the wrong choice. even if reloop have great implementations, the build quality won't be the same as the TANK vci... and the transparent illuminated plastic sides of the jogs are sooooo fresh! (blue, then red when you touch the sensitive part of it...) anyway, I guess it's only a matter of price range. anyone will be really happy with either a vci or a reloop 2 I'm sure! cheeeers |
Loyce Paskey 31.05.2009 | I'd being researching the dj midi controller market for a month or so until I finally took the plunge with a black vci-100 on Monday last week. As usually happens when you dwell on these things I gradually bid myself up from a hercules, to a numark, to a vestax. I believe the year I spent working at Bang & Olufsen turned me into a label snob as far as electronics are concerned (although my miele washing machine, fridge and vacuum have never ever given me any problems so I figure you do get what you pay for). Either way, the 'cool' of owning a vestax product finally got the better of me. Anyway, through my month of research I never once came across the new reloop digital jockey 2 (my research obviously wasn't that thorough). My vci is ordered now so there's no going back, but I'm getting those doubts about having missed a trick. I'm interested to hear more from Guust-Fi about issues you've had with the cue/play buttons on the reloop. Do you believe that this is a build quality issue. I guess I really just want re-assurnace that I made the right choice, which is silly, but thanks in advance anyway. |
Brandon Krugger 30.05.2009 | I knew there must be some workaround that VCI users here put on, thanks. Now I |
Claud Balkum 30.05.2009 | pepehouse -> it is easy with the vci to program the joggwheel to scroll trough song with a shift button. |
Brandon Krugger 29.05.2009 | The browsing problem is enough to makes me believe in the Reloop again, I'm used to navigate very fast through the collection with the rotary of my DJ2 must be very annoying to have to press repeatedly the buttons on the VCI to reach the desired track, how people here deals with that? must be a lot of VCI users in this community and Ean himself never talked about this downside of the controller. |
Lenora Brunett 27.05.2009 | check techsono, it's an ebay french shop. they got 7 black vci's in stock, for 379 euros, shipping included (for france, for spain I don't know). I ordered mine on monday 2 am (I'm in holidays), and received it on tuesday morning via chronopost. It's a reallly good gear, but I found some (minor) things I feel not so good: - browsing with the dedicated buttons is a pain in the ass: you can't hold the "down" button to scroll down in your directory, so you have got to press several times to reach the track you need to choose... I guess I'll still use my mouse for the browsing job, or assign an external midi controller for that (the big rotary on my padkontrol could perfectly do the job, since i'ts not used in my live set) => the reloop has a rotary knob for this purpose (much better) - controllers are not "detected" when you launch traktor (traktor 3 LE), so you've got to move pots, faders, crossfader and pitch faders to have the traktor controls matching the physical ones. (minor problem I know ; ) ) - pitch faders : around the "zero" position, it's horrible to set the pitch precisely, since the fader has a "zero clip" around which the fader doesn"t send any data... and i'ts physically impossible to set a 0,1 pitch move. i.e., you're at 128,1, and you can't move to 128,2. ok for 128,3 or 127,9, but a 0,1 bpm shift is NOT possible. you then have to push "sync" button. (I guess that with traktor Pro I'll be able to set precisely the fader length, at 8%, and it will be more precise... but with traktor LE it's 10% and nothing else) => reloop 2 will be better for that, with 14bit midi faders + NO physical "clip" on the "zero" fader point. After all that said I have to say that I love the vci, I've mixed severl hours with it and it's a great controller. The jogwheels are really fine once you are used to them. the master section is great too, the EQs and faders are great to use. No bug with traktor 3 LE (just a problem with ID3 tags, but this is not a vci problem...) ONLY PLEASURE! I still believe that the reloop is really interesting. When it's released I'll keep informing myself about it. Perhap's if it is really reliable I'll then sell the vci to get the reloop... we'll see! cheers |
Brandon Krugger 27.05.2009 | I found a VCI-100 for 349€, which is not a bad price but is not the black one which I prefer, where did you ordered yours? It seems I can't find it in black here in Spain. Also I would like to know if the only difference is the color. |
Lenora Brunett 25.05.2009 | pepehouse: yes, yes, and yes. Reloop 2 seems a great deal for the price! I just ordered a black VCI 100, couldn't wait anymore to get my dj controller, I have a show on saturday may 30, so I was in a kind of hurry And I know I'm not really fair with my live gear, so I need first quality built controllers, the vstax was the best choice for me. But with little budget and no need for a real tank-like gear, the reloop would have been my choice, since it has really great abilities, even that the vci 100 won't never be able to give you! good luck! cheers |
Brandon Krugger 24.05.2009 | I've got a Faderfox DJ2, I'm so happy with it but the problem is that you can't control the 4 decks in Traktor at once so I've been believeing about getting another controller but I believe the Vextax is overpriced so I saw the Reloop 2 and thought it was a good buy, I did some research on the Reloop but coudn't find an answer for this basic questions, maybe you can help me: -Does the controller edition works just by plugging it to the USB port of the computer or it needs power supply? -Will I be able to control the 4 decks at once or switch between them with the Reloop? -And in general, I would like to know if you can do the same things with the Reloop as you do with the Vextax here. I know this questions are very simple, but I need to be sure before buy it, Im quite new to this controller world, thanks in advance. |
Lenora Brunett 21.05.2009 | check this : http://www.recordcase.de/cgi-bin/cos...4744&PID=10003 249euros for a DIGITAL JOCKEY 2 controller edition, available in less than a week... seems really attractive, isn't it? If the 1st version of digital jockeys was quite good, may the second version be better? + sensitive jogwheels (periphery plastic and center metal plate) + "pro" faders + 14 bit midi (for the jogs, dunno for the rest) + 2 real midi layers with 2 shift buttons for the right and left side to be accessible independantly + aluminium housing + Traktor LE (light version of Traktor PRO) ... + price... ??? wekk, DELEMMA DILEMMA !!!!! |
Irving Delgado 20.05.2009 | Confirmed. You have to keep the shift buttons pressed though to activate the other layer. They aren't toggle buttons. |
Lenora Brunett 20.05.2009 | well thanks, so I understand that the level faders and the EQ knobs can be shifted (that's all I need, perhap's with the fx buttons) ??? that'd be cool.... thanks for having checked this for me cheers |
