Another BUDGET DIY MIDI project
Another BUDGET DIY MIDI project Posted on: 29.10.2009 by Gaylene Castanza Okay so, as I've said in my last thread post, I am poor, I never seem to have enough money to afford all the amazing gear I want.I have an old xbox console, which is faulty and doesnt work etc, I took one of the controllers and pulled it apart. I have read in community s and post's that you CAN convert an xbox controller into a MIDI signal. So here is my plan, to rewire the connector into a USB connection. House the buttons and knobs in a small box, for easier playing. Anyone have any advice? Someone who has tried a project like this before, I would love it if you could point in the right direction, So far, I have only dismantled the controller, the rest is all plans in my head. Here are some photos of my plan, and what I have so far. ANY help would be great, I'm not sure if this would be beneficial, but keep in mind I have the bare minimum with controllers, I only use an UMX49, just because its cheap really, and I would perfer a button, fader etc controller. | |

Gaylene Castanza 31.10.2009 | Thanks everyone for your input, I have changed a few things around, and will be posting photos of the beginning stages of my controller soon |
Shelby Blancaflor 30.10.2009 | There is a thread here if you search for BC Ninja you should find it. I believe he was building an extra fx controller and it has good photos, which show how you can cleanly desolder connections on the Xbox board. As far as I know you should be able to get 6 analogue inputs from the board meaning that with two of these and a couple of pots plus two faders you could make a basic two deck mixing unit that could be used for pitch bending too. It should be fun an fairly cheap, however, keep in mind that the costs for pots and buttons etc. quickly add up so. In the end a second hand controller or a crappy new one might be cheaper. If you desperately need pots and rotaries, the cheapest way to get four deck control should be to watch ebay until a second hand Behringer BCR is offered. But on the other hand it wouldn't have the cool look, feel and personality that only DIY can offer. |
Nicholas Karty 30.10.2009 | I believe you should be able to switch the xbox buttons to arcade buttons for example, also there is a project like this, search for xbox midi or something like that :P |
