Modding my midi Keyboard
Modding my midi Keyboard Posted on: 26.07.2010 by Delinda Canant I will admit when it comes to midi - I am a noob. I am a musician(Guitar, Bass, Drums) at heart, and recently have taken a liking to controllerism. I recently got both Logic Express 9 and Traktor Pro. I have posted on here asking questions about controllers when I realized that I already have a midi keyboard, why not use that? So I have been working on a mapping for my midi keyboard for use with Traktor Pro. (http://keyboards-midi.musiciansfrien...=product_sim_A) Now I realize that I need knobs, faders, etc. I have been reading all the info on this site, and decided to ask the community for their thoughts on the best way to mod this. I've seen mods on the Oxygen 8 and Remote25SL but none on my controller. I would like to turn this into my all in one super controller that can be used in the studio with Logic and one stage with Traktor. Both of which are amazing pieces of software. My original thoughts are to set up a mixer in the middle with multiple channels, and use the left side for the left deck and the right side for the right deck. and then put knobs all over the place lol. Anyway, this is what I will be attempting to pull of, I'll take any words of advice, criticism, links to useful info, or whatever! Wish me Luck! | |

Kasi Kyung 28.07.2010 | Thanks! Yeah! That's perfect! I was believein something along those lines. I was also believeing trackball... Make a shift button and have it be x/y to. I'm hoping to just see somehing random at fry's or best buy... Maybe an R2D2 usb hub as well. |
Graham Frazier 28.07.2010 | That's nice man, reminds me of the old Moldover controller. For the "red box" controls you could get a keyboard numpad like this... Something like that should fit nicely in there. |
Kasi Kyung 27.07.2010 | I ran into this problem too... I needed some sort of grid, some sort of clip launch, knobs for effect parameters/%s yada... I started with an M-Audio e49 for Ableton. Moved the keys around to support clip launching. I obviously don't need, or want for that matter, 24 clip launch button groups, So I hacked half of em off. I also needed something for cue-points and effects in Traktor. LPD8 fit the bill perfectly. But now for production, I need something with faders, not just rotary... Some Transport controls would be badass, but not needed. So I purchased a NanoKontrol... TTHHEEEENNNN... I got tired of the space I needed, got tired of waving my arms wildly, frantically reaching for buttons... So I mashed em all together... I freaking love it. Ableton: 9 channels Black keys are relaunch playing clip in that unit, white is mute(hold), each has it's own fader for VOL, rotary above channel swaps between a/b send/master (nothing for 2 white buttons yet), transport controls are standard. LPD8 is 'red box' clip launch (2x4 grid, respectively 1 scene only) I use my ipod touch as midi controller to move the red selection box (need a directional MIDI pad to go between the empty key spacesd and the lpd8 for this) The rotaries on the LPD8 are, top row effect units for selection in box and bottom row is global effects... Traktor: Cues are on LPD8 pads, scene 1 is decks c/b, 2 is c/a, 3 d/b, 4 d/a. top row rotaries are chained effects, unit 1 and bottom row is 2. Nano Kontrol isn't used. First 4 black keys are Sync(pinkie), Key lock, key down, key up on deck A and reversed for Deck B (works in my head) CUSTOMIZED FTWWWWWW! |
Delinda Canant 27.07.2010 | its all good man, thats a great idea. i have a paper due tomorrow and a test in a different class so i won't be able to do it toevening
or tomorrow, but the next day and this weekend i'll take the springs out and work more on the mapping. having volume and crossfader separate like that is gonna help my workflow be more natural. i learn best by doing things, kind of figuring them out as I go along. i'm sure i'll need some help working out the details tho, i'll send ya a pm if I get stuck. |
Graham Frazier 27.07.2010 | BTW, sorry i missed your post earlier about mapping the midi fighter to the keyboard. I wouldn't recommend doing this, because the led feedback on the midifighter is crucial to the functionality. You could come up with a much more functional mapping for the keyboard on your own. If you need some help working out the details, just ask. |
Graham Frazier 27.07.2010 | The analog i'm talking about isn't analog like in a analog mixer. With midi there are 2 types of controls, digital being buttons and rotary encoders, and analog being faders and knobs. The analog controllers are then converted to a digital message by the controller. I know the whole thing can be a little confusing. Something you could do is use the wheels for your volume faders. This would involve opening up your keyboard and removing the springs that bounce the pitch wheel back to center. Or if you don't mind having the volume controls apart from each other, you could use the mod wheel and the one fader on your keyboard. But it's really not that hard to take the springs off of a pitch wheel. And if you did you could have 2 volume controls, and use the slider as your cross fader. As far as eq's go, it's impossible to add more knobs/faders to the board so you'll just have to map them to buttons. |
Delinda Canant 27.07.2010 | Hey drew, thanks for the response! You responded to another one of my questions a while back. Appreciate the time you took to answer. I've been working on a mapping, but I just find its almost annoying to do things like volume and crossfade by repeatedly hitting a button, or hitting it once to start and once to stop. Quick question about analog controls: Do they still have to be analog if I am mixing internally? Couldn't midi perform this function? As for now i'll keep working on my mapping. I really like the decalized midi fighter mapping, so that is what I have been trying to base mine off of. Peacce |
Graham Frazier 26.07.2010 | Well for the knobs and sliders you're going to need a second controller. That keyboard only has 3 analog controls(pitch, mod, vol) and you need analog for your knobs and such. But it could be a good tool if you just come up with a creative mapping for it, no modding required. Earl_Panda used to perform live with just a computer keyboard. |
