Well I have pre-ordered and reserved one today for $69.00. I expect to have it towards the end of the month....

I am Just curious how many people look to pick up this new controller. if you are going to be one of the ones to jump on it or wait till we see reviews.

Akai lpd8 Specs images & video

My plans for this is for an extra level of controls to compliment my vci-100 and use the akai for beat juggling and effects in Traktor and to use with Ableton for some production work

that's cool. the product demo video said that it was possible too.

Hello, i've got this controller today and i managed to get a visual feedback for the leds in ableton live.
I used the following settings for turning effects on/off:
in the editor software: set pads to toggle mode;
in ableton live: assign any pad to effect's on/off button using CC mode on the controller and then in the midi map window set min and max values both to zero;
Now when i press the assigned pad the effect turns on and the light turns on, when i press the pad again the effect goes off and the light goes off.The light goes on/off even when i activate/deactivate an effect via the mouse.
However if i leave the effect on and change the program and go back the light is off but the effect is still on.
Hope you find this helpfull

Just a heads up:

The LEDs on the LPD8 ARE controllable via MIDI messages sent back to the controller with a bit of work.

ill start a new thread on how to do this using a couple different methods, in the mean time i took this quick video of some drum looping in ableton.

For playing around alex.ketch's mapping will be fine.

I didn't check the mapping but it should go well along with your 1200s.
Even if not, mapping the LPD8 will take you maybe 2 hours to have most of what you want.

Then just use it and if you find any room for improvements, map it that way.

I found this process of always improving to be a lot of fun and highly motivating.

Thanks Alex. But this is optimized for use with a VCI 100, right? I'm using two 1200s and an analog mixer. Not sure how the mapping would differ, I'm still green when it comes to controllers, but i'm sure it would somehow.

Does anyone have a good mapping for Cues/Loops/EFX? Trying to educate myself in MIDI, but would like to play with the thing to see if I even like using it with TS Pro.

Thanks.

I haven't had a chance to look at the Stanton units.. They do look nice, i wish there was a place setup near by that you could try before you buy

Thanks for the tips.
I believe you are right - I will have to spend a bit more than the LPD8 to get something useable it seems.
I already have a good analogue mixer so I might have a look around on eBay for a midi controller like a FaderFox or A&H 1D. Any other suggestions you have would be appreciated.
Cheers,

In that case the LPD8 might what you are looking for although you will be disappointed of how difficult the handling will be.

Why not go with a Hercules DJ Console or anything really cheap to start of?

Purely because I don't have a midi controller at the moment and I'm looking for a single controller that's as cheap as possible so I can stop using the mouse...

It's definitely constructed as a complement to your DVS-system or another controller.

From the pure number of possible different messages you could control everything with it but it would be really annoying.

Why do you want it to be your only controller?

Is anyone using this as their only controller for Traktor?
If so does it remove the need for a mouse? Or do you find yourself still using the mouse to do things like searching for tracks and skipping through a track?

I have my lpd 8 now and I must say I love it! Its so fun to jump between hot cues in traktor with it and saves me from turning juggle mode on and off all the time to toggle. Not to mention the led's are super bright and look very cool. Even tho the knobs are somewhat short they seem surprisingly smooth and are great to use with effects taking advantage of the extra banks in traktor. I would reccomend this cheap controller to anyone, you have nothing to lose!

can anyone confirm if the knobs can be swapped out? some of those chunky djtt white knobs would look sexy on this controller

Wow those knobs do look low...can you order taller ones from akai i wonder?
Johnny Achziger
15.10.2009
Ok...

Here are some nice High Res close up shots of the controller.. Feels very solid. IMHO better than the nanopad.

I have already cracked the case open and checked it out, They are using an ARM microprocessor, Fat silicone buttons, not sure what manufacturer made the knobs.

Ill try to take some photos of the guts and post.

The leds are surface mount. and are smaller than the typical 1206 smd form factor so modding would only be for the experienced.

No piezoelectric sensors on the pads looks to be purely resistive.

cool, im building my setup for cue point juggling and mixing etc so i wont be using it for that. But i want to use a controlller to select samples, throw in fx when im beat juggling and scratching on my tt and mixer setup. You've given me a bit to believe about before i pull the trigger on the Nano or the lpd. Thanks

i really do believe built wise the lpd8 is better than the nanokontrol plus the lpd8's pads would light up with orange leds around the pads. as for controls the nanokontrols would still win with more controls. but if ure looking to play around with cue jugglings plus effects controls than lpd8 is better as the pads are bigger definitely. but if im you id integrate both to have more controls. the reason i have all this three integrated as i want to reduce the switching around of the scs3 system or when
im controlling certain parametres for the scs3 system id be controlling others with the small controllers. theres lotsa repeated midi controls which ive mapped out on the small controllers which the scs3 have. besides the lpd8 comes with its own editor like the nanoseries therefore the customization for the lpd8 is very versatile. the verdict lpd8 has better built and looks awesome and has good controls, more for cue jugglings plus you can switch up to 4 scenes. however as for more controls the nanokontrols have more knobs plus sliders and also more buttons.

ive integrated the lp8 with the nano series and all i can say is this is a sweet piece of affordable gear for more and faster cue juggling and the control of other parametres

Opening it up to mod it I did notice it had plastic potentiometers. Kinda cheep so DON'T CRANK THE KNOBS! also the knobs feel like they will come lose after a while. Don't want a missing knob now do we. All in all well worth the money. I wish some metal would have been in it but hell it was cheep. I hope Allen & Heath come out with a nano controller haha, that would be very well built.

I do have the LPD and I have to say its very well built. Yes it has very low knobs (expected). to the point you may not want it for separate effect unit. It will work for it but it may be hard if you glitch shit out a lot or move hands around quite a bit. I'm going to try it out and see how it goes. It has 2 separate buttons. Prog change and cc.... I cannot find reference for the actual use for it. I know what they do but what use do they have.... If that question makes sence. Also I would like to know how to change sensitivity. You have to be pretty firm with your triggering. Kind of annoying with my personal playing style.
