APC80 Tutorial Videos!
Posted on: 02.02.2011 by
as promised, delamar.de published the APC80 video today. it even includes a bit of the "fuck reel" I'll post my follow-up video later.

since we had a brand-new APC80 after the tutorial was done and I really don't need another one (it would be badass - but seriously, no), we eventually decided that the best thing to do is to auction it off at ebay *hint hint*.

in related news, I also relaunched my website

--- UPDATE ---

here's the follow-up, in HD.

I have now completed my APC80 and am happy with it. I have added a couple of features to mine. I have run soldered cables of the DC input on the two units so that both units run from on PSU that I have upgraded from 1no 12V DC 2A and 1no 12VDC 1A to 1no 12VDC 3A supply from my box project (ongoing) here.
I have also used the off cuts of the Aluminium to strengthen the join between the two units, photo's to follow.

So I was believeing earlier today about creating an entire large-scale performance rig out of two APC80s (an APC160):

  • first APC80 would control 4 decks in Traktor on one computer
  • second APC40 would control effects for those 4 decks in Ableton on a second computer
  • last APC20 would be used to control the lighting for the entire show

Sounds like overkill, no? Although, it'd be the perfect size for two people to work at.

I have no idea, which is why I didn't mention that in the video; not too good with tech measures, especially not in english sorry.

I recommend taking off a side panel of the 20 and then going to a hardware store... trial and error. it's how I did it. the thick screws are ~2cm long an the ones that go on the bottom are the same as those already in the APCs (take one out for reference), except ~2mm longer.

good luck!

What size are the two different screw types? I'm hoping to start the mod today!!

the apc80 ebay auction just ended: 500 EUR. a bargain IMO, but the video production costs are covered

true - I also use foot switches. the novation ones are great, cheap and effective.

Awesome....gonna check it out a lil later.

I find the APC40 perfect for Traktor....for the way i use it. Derders mapping is what I use and modded slightly.

I can see it being 100% perfect to use with the TSP2.....its flawless for my current setup and I have a lot of faders and buttons left which would be mapped to functions in the new version of Traktor.
The footpedal ports are the added bonus too!

as to TSP2, yeah - I'll probably take a look at that but I definitely won't be using the APC80 with traktor; I believe the layout of the controls makes most sense in ableton live I'm sure someone on here will eventually come up with an excellent mapping, but I like my setup the way it is. I'll stick with the 80 for ableton live and my three pad controllers + the evo5 for traktor; it's more than enough to get creative.

as to the follow-up video, I had to re-do it (saw the original footage again, realized that it sucked, went back to square one) but it's on the way to the rendering queue definitely coming this week-end, if this render turns out okay I might even upload it toevening .
Sweet, I've been trying to figure the hard-map Midi out forever haha.

Anyway, just in case I ever want to take my apc80 apart I ducktaped the bottom and put a nice white electrical tape line over the top with a symmetrical piece on the other side in the middle of the apc40.... it's surprisingly sturdy and won't leave my roadcase unless i'm home. Check it out.

Lots of credit to ctrld for the idea, I wouldn't have done it with out the verification from him.

Great video I hope to make one soon as I get enough money to grab a APC40 to go with my 20. How long before Akai starts producing these themselves?

@ctrld....

So are going to upgrade to the TSP2 software?

Are you still jamming the APC80?

What are your thoughts on the APC80 and the TSP2 software together?

I believe it will be fucking brilliant!

Searching for the APC20 here....might even buy it NEW....and do the mod!

Nice vid!

I have got my eye out for the APC20....have not seen much of it here in SA.
The APC came to me by luck really.

I might cough up the dough for a brand new one......

I really like.

Thing is....it is going to be PERFECT for the new Traktor Pro 2 software.

PERFECT i tell you.

"And the warranty is gone, so now we need to continue"
I like that.

Very good stuff, got some questions I had answered.
I'm super tempted to start modding my own pair, I need to watch my cashflow a little though, and spend what I have on my own controller.

You oughta build more, and sell them
