Isotonik 7 - B3ta - Work in Progress (APC40)
Posted on: 20.02.2011 by Laurice Migneco
Hi Everyone,

My latest incarnation of my max4live device is reaching an imminent release, the main reason for a from the ground rewrite has been my experience of playing out with Isotonik 6 and a desire to streamline internally the cpu usage and externally the control mechanism to simplify the performance controls...

CPU usage wise, 6 ran on standstill at 27-31% whilst these are the stats for 7 currently....

The main device itself no longer needs a slave device on every track it controls, as a result you now get a more fully featured set of Looping controls for the first four tracks in the template...

Within the Master device you get automatic follow actions on the first four tracks so you can split your tunes into sections, loop on the fly but still have the next clip below trigger when the previous clip ends...

By pressing the Master Select button on the APC40 you switch in and out of the Isotonik Device Controls, this gives you standard functionality over the first four tracks at all times with the right hand half of the APC40 given over to up to 5 banks of different control features, switching between the 5 scenes is done through the scene launch buttons with each scene having a distinctive lighting pattern and full feedback from the device. Work continues improving the device however the first two scenes are nearing completion...

Loop3r:

1, Set a 1, 2 or 4 bar Loop on any of the first four tracks without having to navigate to the clip playing first
2, Halve and Double the loop length by moving either the loop start or loop end point
3, Move the loop brace forwards or backwards by a bar at a time or by the loop length
4, Visual indication of the loop status:
- Green - Clip set to Loop, playing position yet to reach loop brace
- Amber - Clip set to Loop, playing position within Loop brace
- Red - Clip set to Loop, playing position past Loop end point, clip will
continue to end and finish with the clip below being triggered by the automatic follow actions
5, The faders are assigned to the loop end point, you can therefore reduce the loop end point on any set loop, this is quantised in it's response to an 1/8th so your loops always stay in sync and additionally the length of the loop is always divisible by 1/8ths again so that clips remain in sync (you can get some crazy syncopated rhythms with a little practise)

Eff3cts:

These now only effect the track in which the Master device sits on so the Rec/Arm buttons when lit send the audio from the first four tracks into the device diverting it from the master, this way you can combine tracks and effect them at the same time without a massive hit on the CPU usage.

1, A two bar Slicer effect that allows you to retrigger at 1/8th points the audio from the previous two bars, how much of a slice you retrigger is determined by the fader position and updates live so you can catch a snare, repeat it at 1/4 beat intervals and then drop it to 1/64ths for a roll effect. A button switches the controls for the Slicer from Momentary to Toggle giving you a free hand to use the other effects on a chosen slice
2, A Gater effect synced to the Slice size, combine slicing with gating and catch only every other repeat giving a staccato effect
3, Turntable Reverse, control the speed of the reverse from realtime to double speed, stab it in and change the speed for some Zippy effects or just use it at same speed reverse with the gater to emulate some basic scratching
4, Turntable Brake, a traditional turntable stop effect that can be adjusted from lasting just a beat, like pressing the stop button on a Sl1200, to 16 bars emulating the wind down when you turn the rocker switch to power down
5, Dummy, You get a bank of four dummy clips that can be triggered at any time, a floating window gives you the clip names and each bank is available to be scrolled through independently. Dummy clips can be written for any of the feature of the Master device and the control of the first four tracks and returns, For example your dummy clip could turn up Send A on track two whilst at the same time modulating the rack that sits on Return A....

The final fader in this scene is reserved for Sm4rt effects whereby a bank of 8 different Sm4rt effects can be selected (with visual feedback on the APC40) and then controlled using one fader...

Encoders:

1, Two banks of User Configurable encoders, many users requested a more traditional DJ set up whereby the Track Control and Device Control Encoders were arranged Horizontally in reference to the first four tracks. By using the shift and Pan, Send A, B, C buttons you switch between four banks of controls.
2, Track Resets, without shift engaged the Pan, Send A, B, C buttons perform a reset to a stored value for each horizontal set of encoders, a midi mappable Bank reset button is also available. These resets have a configurable quantise feature so that your reset can always hit the end of bar point
3, The third Bank gives access to the Send A, B, C and D for the first four tracks, with resets back to zero for each
4, The fourth Bank is for Return control, by using the Pan, Send A, B and C buttons you select which Return Track Rack the Track Control encoders map to, the bottom row of Device Control Encoders automatically map to the Send for the first four tracks that will send audio to the Return Rack chosen.
5, Floating Window gives a visual indication of the current status, reset values etc. (after a while the visual indication on the APC40 of which bank you're in will be enough so this is mainly for configuring the device to your own preferences

The latest version 7.0.9 is being tested by a crack team to ensure compatibility with a number of different systems, the team are also excellent at suggesting improvements and tweaks that aid performance...

If you've seen the functionality of my Octop4d device you may have a reasonably good idea of what the final three scenes may give functionality to...

Any questions or feedback by all means let me know!

Thanks man, much appreciated.... if you get the launchpad i'm rebuilding Octop4d and will have a template that has both Isotonik and Octop4d working together within it...

Please scratch the dummy effects! Their nice, but I've never been a fan. If you could implement something along the lines of MLR you would be a God.

I would recommend s4racen's Isotonik project to anyone with an APC40! It has inspired creativity in my dj sets, and really unlocks the potential of my APC! While most ableton dj templates are free, this one is well worth the money because Darren is always an email away with constant updates and troubleshooting help!

Thanks for what must be countless hours of work! I just ROCKED a friends house party, and made everyone elses CDJ set look BORING!

Just working on the latest release, hoping with some roadtesting to include controls for serato's bridge to turn the APC40 into a Hybrid controller for the two systems bringing Vinyl back into my live setup....

Details and video coming soon...

Hi Mate,

There isn't a max4live runtime I'm afraid so when your trial expires you won't be able to use any max4live devices...

I am sorry! I didn't doubt you, I was just confused! In fact, your reputation stands. This template has given me a good starting point, and I am finding myself much more creative with it. I love how everything is laid out, I hardly ever need to look at my screen when mixing! It was worth every penny! Thanks for the dedication, I am excited to see what else you come up with.

Hi Rage,

Sadly i sleep at evening so it's a bit difficult to respond to emails, when i woke this morning i had a notification you had joined the shared folder so sent a message back asking you to try again.... I've not heard back so i imagine you're in a different time zone...

I've got many users who have used the site so would appreciate your source that says my site is a scam? As you appreciate that's a pretty hurtful claim to make on a community as widely read as this one!

My original redirect url thestudiosessions.co.uk expired and i've been unable to get hold of the original providers as they seem to have disappeared, as a result i have moved to thestudiosessions.org , i never allow comments on any posts on the site to display email addresses and do not share anyones email address.... All future updates to the folder are automatically notified to members and i follow this up with details of the changes by blind carbon copying the members...

I'm unsure as to where your notion of identity theft has come from? I protect my own email from spam by using boxbe, please google it, i'd recommend it, you don't have to register but any emails to me are diverted to a spam folder unless i have approved the sender....

Thanks for your time...

I bought your isotonik master template from http://darrencowley.blogspot.com/. After making the paypal payment, I was forwarded to a page with a link to a "SugarSync" site I have never heard of. I registered for an account, only to find that your link to sugarsync is for a deleted folder. I then attempted to email you, and received a response from some site called "boxbe"..... So I tried to register for that, only to find that it required my gmail username and password.... Google says that site is a scam, so I don't believe that is going to happen..

How do I download this template, and better yet, how does one get a hold of you without having their identity stolen?

Now that 8.2.2 is out i've been working for the last few days on a hybrid Traktor / Ableton set up...

Using the Midi Scene i've got a couple of pages up and running that send midi to the IAC driver and then the signal is picked up by Traktor...

I'm using Traktor Scratch so the timecode dictates the tempo of both Ableton, using Traktors Virtual Midi Output, and Traktor...

It's early days but the sync seems tight enough if you wanting to move the pitch slowly on the 1210's but when you make a swift movement it takes a while to catch up with the tempo and then it's out of phase so a press of the sync button brings it all back in line albeit starting the clips in Ableton from 1.1.1 again....

Gonna persevere for a bit and then switch back to Serato and see the difference, gut feeling is that the Bridge is just better so the only downside is that i have a SL1 rather than a SL3 so my Ableton Audion has to be routed through one of the decks of Serato, it can piggyback the audio of a deck but i'd prefer the Audio10 set up i have whereby two outputs are given to Traktor decks and two are given to Ableton's Master and Cue..... I don't need the complexity of Traktors Midi Mapping ability (which is very impressive and reminds me of bomes) as i can do all of that within Max4Live...

Might end up making the 4th Scene a DVS scene switchable between Traktor and Serato leaving the Midi Scene alone for users to customise but we'll see....

Compared to lots of the m4l devices out there I'm quite happy with the gui, but then beauty is in the eye of the beholder... Once you've initialised the device though you won't need to look at it again ;-)

Cheers mate, no there aren't any plans to bring in Smart mixing, i don't really dig it myself but you can always replace the racks in the template with Bentosan's ones which seemed to work the best to me... Then use one of the Mid1 scenes to control the switches.....

And now the Clip stop buttons light if a clip is playing in that track, this updates as you scroll the redbox left and right....

In addition press and hold the track select button for 1 beat and you'll select the waveform of the clip playing in that track without any complicated button presses!

Version 7.1.0 adds a very simple feature...

Hold down the Clip/Track button and press one of the Clip Launch buttons and the view will change to display the clip thats located in that slot without triggering it to play.... Simple but effective....
7.0.9 added a new scene whereby you could program 8 pages of midi messages and light feedback....

Details on my blog http://thestudiosessions.co.uk
