controller / keyboard advice

afternoon folks,

not sure if this is the right community , but basically need bit of advice controller-wise.

essentially, been out the game for a while - was last using cubase vst and cool edit, hooked up to big old keyboard and couple of turntables!

wanting to get back in to the whole production type thing, and not sure where to start.

been looking at the m-audio axiom range, which look quite good - is there any difference between the usb and the midi as regards controlling sounds?
the other option was the yamaha p95, more of a keyboard, but does have midi, so could be used for the same thing - and has the advantage of built-in speakers as well as nicely weighted keys...

any thoughts most welcome.

cheers

Difference between USB and straight MIDI (assuming that the USB device has MIDI controls in the first place) is that with USB, you don't need an adapter to hook up to your computer. However, not having native MIDI outputs does restrict you to using the controller with things that have USB inputs. I would say that you're more flexible with native MIDI outputs (thus you can always get a MIDI to USB adapter to use with USB only devices) but if it's only going to be ever controlling computer software, USB only output is fine (as in USB only PHYSICAL output, the device still needs to be a MIDI device to control the software since the majority of software are usually only MIDI compatible).

As for what controller to get, it really depends on what you want to use for your DAW. The obvious choice is Ableton of course and if you're going the Ableton route, LOTS of great controllers to choose from. My personal favourites are from Novation. I highly suggest taking a look at the ZeRO SL Mk II if you just want controls but don't need the keyboard. If you want the keyboard, there's the SL MkII's. I find them to be well built, have excellent flexibility in terms of controls, and the prices are quite reasonable.
