NEW Windows Tablet

No price confirmed yet, but rumors say $500 for the base and $1000 for the Pro.

USB MIDI ? Wonder if the $500 base model will run Traktor ?

There's 2 models. One runs Windows RT which is a more locked down version of Windows 8 designed to run on ARM-based tablets. That will only run software from the Windows Store and is basically an MS equivalent of an iPad, but with standard ports and the keyboard cover. The other model is x86-based and runs the full version of Windows 8, so you can run any software that will run on Windows.

If they will run on Windows 8, they will run on the Pro version of the Surface. If you have a regular laptop with Windows 8 on it, the only difference between that and the Surface Pro is the form factor/keyboard. The architecture is the same.

You're missing the point, this is a software thing, not a hardware thing. MS doesn't care about the brand of HD in your machine, if they did they could easily do as Apple have done and developed a custom HD firmware and/or proprietary connector and easily banned people from Live that way. The thing they want to stop is people filling their HDs with copies of games and running them from there as happened with the previous xbox. All console manufacturers make a loss on the hardware (apart from maybe Nintendo), the software is where the money is and that is the focus of their bans on live.

What you're describing is an anti-software piracy measure, not a hardware lock-in.

I'm not sure what point you're trying to make about xbox remotes, there are some high quality 3rd party ones and some cheap shitty ones, just like 3rd party add-ons for any other console or computer you care to mention.

Picture the surface with Traktor, Serato, Ableton & Recordbox loaded on the tablet. You get to the club and 1 USB cable to hook up either to the pioneer mixer or Rane mixer and your ready to go.

And there you go again!

What are you basing that on? As far as I can see the keyboard use is optional, it'll behave just like a tablet.

The issue is not "the platform" or the OS or the Company involved. Its the execution, the design thought behind them and the intended market segment, of which this particular tablet with its variations seems to want to be a jack-of-all-trades and not quite a master of anything.

Going back to your flat comment:

So the completely flat Ipad is absolutely fine, but the completely flat Surface isn't?

Don't get me wrong, I don't give a fuck about tablets but you fanbois sure are funny.

The surface tablet on the other hand appears to be designed for (wait for it)..... a surface. This negates the need for a tablet in the first place (verging on ultra book territory).

I don't have a tablet, and have not seen the need for one - this may open up new doors or close them forever, depending how well it handles day to day tasks. and only time will tell if this will change the laptop/tablet market.

The Fact is - we don't have any real-world facts yet to base anything technical on (like how well traktor or serato will run, or IF they will even run).

Sorry, I meant outside of Apple a hd is just an hd. No one else apart from Apple does this. God they're bastards aren't they?

google all you like.... you said the magic words, "prepared correctly", if you fuck up your console can get banned, stick a generic hard drive in and boot and see what happens.

And ... fanboy what ? Out of my arse ?, eh nope, my GF worked in Xbox support and it was pretty usual to have consoles banned for upgrades by individuals who don't know better.

Anyhow back on topic - the MS tablet thingy could be interesting, depends on how well windows8 works on a tablet-like machine and if other manufacturers are ahead of the game by the time it gets released - assuming windows 8 is coming out in the 4th quarter, we might be as far as 9 months away from seeing it in the wild.

Anti-climax much.

The Pro model has an i5 and just runs a regular desktop OS. Also said the Pro model will cost around the same as ultrabooks, so it's safe to assume it'll be 750-1000.

It's almost too ideal to be this close to happening haha

This is seriously THE device I've been waiting for. Beyond being able to produce in Ableton out of the house, just experimenting with my softsynths anywhere will be invaluable (especially if I can tweak all the knobs through touch!!!)

If I want to upgrade my PS3 HD, I just pop a sata HD in it and call it a day. My point was that the majority of the accessories with that MS tablet are going to be MS branded. And the 3rd party stuff is going to be 2nd or 3rd tier quality. Look at the after market remotes for the xbox. Im not a apple or MS fanboi, Im a tech fanboi of things that work and Im willing to try any software and hardware out.

Back on topic, Ill be sure to goto the MS store to give this bad boy a run. if it works great. I might just pick it up to run SSL for me.

Firstly JesC said that had to buy MS branded HDs and headsets, I corrected him on that then you said that you could get banned from Xbox live for not buying an non xbox HD, obviously when you buy a hd you have to format it for use on your system, whatever your system, you don't just stick stuff in and hope for the best do you? No, you read the instructions.

Its dope to hear that it has a usb port and a i-series processor & ARM. , but looks like a iPad 1st Gen with the case being used as a stand & a plastic keyboard. If its anything like MS previous hardware/software combos. Its going to be more locked down than a iPad. Look at a XBOX, only works with MS BT headseat & MS hard drive. Only time will tell, and see what this little beast of capable of. I would say to keep a close eye on GEEKBENCH to see if any performance stats pop up.
