*BUILD LOG* 'CDJ 2000'-style DIY Traktor controller

Just in the design stages at the moment but I'm pretty excited by this controller concept... believe it's pretty unique and is a good compromise between a performance 'midi-fighter-esque' controller and a more traditional CDJ/mixer combo. See what you believe:

The screen is a 7" USB screen by Samsung (model U70) and is the most expensive part (about

aaaaand another video! this one explains the concept (or should I say "Koncept") behind the FX section and how the encoders control what's directly below/above them on the screen. Check it out:

At the moment the HID device (numpad keyboard) is just outputting standard qwerty keyboard data. But, the software I've designed also supports midi output. It's written in Autohotkey. I'll upload the source and exe once it's finished.

hmm, well I guess you could call a numpad a bit 'like a MIDI-Fighter' but that's before it's been hacked up! (I'm only using the numpad circuit board as a HID brain). Think of the LCD screen as one small part of this project - a bit like the LCD screens on NI's Machine.

almost got the clone software working now - starting to become semi-useful lol

I'm working on an entirely new layout which will be much more mixer-focused and less cdj-tentric (so unlike the original design). I'm calling this controller the Traktor Koncept as I hope NI will take some of my ideas on board when they see it all running! Will upload some designs in the next few days.

I'm still waiting for a load of parts to arrive that I ordered last week. Most importantly, I badly need the digital calliper to arrive so I can accurately measure everything and make sure I design the front plate properly (so that the holes are big enough etc).

Awesome- I can't Wait to see this badboy coming together!
I am currently plannning a mixer based controller, but would love to include a jog wheel or jog wheels- what would you use for these? As there doesn't appear to be appropriate components around for this sort of thing, only pots and faders etc.

I've pretty much got all the parts I need now - just waiting for the Arduino to arrive so I can start programming.

I'm considering designing a more mixer-focused midi controller instead of two cdj style controllers... mainly so I don't have to make two controllers! (but also so that I can just use one usb lcd screen, to save on costs)

OMG. . .
I believe I just jizzed in my pants. . .( yet again ). . .

@Mil0
That is the most genius thing I've seen for a controller!

Wish I can partake in this great venture. . .but work/personal life is getting to me. . . Definitely keepin an eye on this one as well. . .

nice one guys

please post in this thread (http://www.djranking s.com/community /showthread.php?t=23877) if you want to get involved, as this thread is seriously starting to get off topic lol

back on topic: I just ordered/bought the following items today:

First of all, this looks amazing.

Secondly, I am already creating a custom built midi-fighter on a program, then 3d rendering it, then actually going to create it. After I am done with that project of my own, I would not mind helping with this at all. And I guess I could be person "A" on your list Mil0!

I'd be game for that.
I've got a coder guy on my deck project, and can do everything but the programming, but when I get it done, I'd be game to make a few more and pass em around, if somebody wants to write the code.

I haven't the money to make more than one right now, so we'd have to figure that out.

I'm believeing something along the lines of a very small scale production line. If we could all agree on a basic design for a custom controller that uses broadly the same components, we could make the controller in stages individually. For example:

- Person A has experience in machining and can get laser cutting/etching done cheap
- Person B has experience in soldering and can do all the wiring
- Person C has Arduino/Midibox experience and can do the microprocessor coding
- Person D has Traktor mapping skills
- Person E etc

Infact, if say just 4 people could agree on a design then we could collectively build 4 controllers between us (by constructing and shipping the completed parts to one another until 4 controllers are completed). Is this in any way feasible?

edit: I can already see the beginning of this happening in the NI Kontrol M1 thread (http://www.djranking s.com/community /showthread.php?t=22996). If we can't get NI to make something like this, then surely the DJTT community can?

i would love to be on board for a community-based collaboration, got some soldering/electronic skills, basic c-scripting and understandig.

more on the handcraft-side of things though to be honest.

Good work on the clone-drive, I mean, clone display.

I'd be in for a project.
I'm working on a controller too, which should start entering existence soon enough.
I can:
Work in 3D (primary area of expertise) and make production drawings.
Create pcb schematics and boards

Soldering isn't that hard, it just takes some practice.
Take a look over at Sparkfun for a some pointer, they've got a couple of pretty neat guides that helped me a lot: http://www.sparkfun.com/tutorials/213

I'd love to go the midibox route but my soldering skills just aren't up to the task. If it were possible to buy pre-soldered/assembled midibox boards then I might consider it, otherwise I'll stick with Arduino. The reason being that there are already existing scripts that will pretty much do what I want and there are a few other people on here that are working on it as well so hopefully I shouldn't need to write anything from scratch; only modify stuff.

Also, I'm pretty decent at scripting in Autohotkey and I enjoy a challenge so I'm hoping I can pick it up pretty easily. From looking through existing Arduino code it doesn't look that hard?

Are you shure aboute that Arduino route?
Especially if you said that your not very good at programming.
I would go with the midibox 64/E. The main plus is about it that you could use only one core for two devices, the programming amount is allso smaller.

Just on my way back from Thailand/HK and got a 6 hour wait in Doha, Qatar. Had a little look around the duty free here and found this really nice 8" LG Photoframe for US$80. Whilst I'm waiting for my connecting flight I had to quickly power it up and see if it works

The good points are that it's really sleek, doesn't have a massive frame and has very good viewing angles as well as being very bright. The bad points are that it has a noticeably lower refresh rate than a standard VGA monitor. There's a bit of latency but that doesn't bother me, it's more like the screen isn't refreshing at 50/60hz. It's not too bad, only noticeable when you compare it to my laptop screen so hopefully it won't be an issue. Shame the shop only had 1 in stock otherwise I probably would have bought two!

The best news is that my Clone tool works perfectly on it! Now I just need to order the Arduino

Sounds good.
I looked around at some other monitors, particularly 10", and found these to be pretty nice.

I hope I can take the shell off and just use the hardware, as that would save me a good bit of space.

as I mentioned earlier, project is on hold until the end of January (when I get back from Hong Kong / Thailand). I'm ordering the Arduino and Mux shield - hoping that I can use it as the 'brain' for this project, but if not I'll go with the xbox joypads.

also, found some Samsung U70's for a really decent price:

just waiting for them to come back in stock.
