American TV vs European TV: What you think about each other? Posted on: 16.09.2011 by Matthew Yanagisawa During my academic formation developing a bachelor on Sociology, I also came across a wide arrange of TV programming from US and EU (that friends gave me thanks to the P2P) that lead me to believe about some very deep cultural differences on both sides. While the differences range from Quarter Pounder/Royal with cheese, driving on right/left side and shenanigans, Im interested in TV programming specifically. To get right into the thing I'll use the example of a program tailored to mass consumption, Gordon Ramsey's Kitchen Nightmares. The EU version is more of a documentary. It pretty much guides you thru the situation and what to do and rise and overcome. Almost zero music, seldom beeps of curse words and overall zero drama. The US version has all this dramatic music and editing, that photofinish/always rushing vibe that will get your heart punding, many beeps and a fuckton of drama. Then I wondered about what the EU believes about US version of their TV and viceversa. I heard american saying EU tv is boring and bland. Unfortunately havent heard EU thoughts on american tv. Then there are other kind of TV programming like news, sports, soap operas, kid programming etc that differ a lot from each other. From my point of view, news in the US is about terror and death threat from arabs and the economy. When I live, Puerto RIco, is about murder, drugs and corruption. From what I have seen EU have a more international approach and more slow pace to delivering news... So I ask my dearest international audience of DJTT about your thoughts, examples and recommendations from each geographical area about TV programming including perhaps some website where you could see (preferably free of charge) tv from each region to experience such differences of perhaps simply some damn good tv shows . TL;DR US and EU tv is so damn different! Why?

The new series, The Walking Dead, at least the comic, the characters do pretty much what I would do in that particular situation. Evil Dead 1 when the woman go out to look for whatever is doing a frightening sound is just stupid believeing. Theres that. the head writer and creator left the show. expect next season to suck all kinds of hard.

For spanish speaking tv shows I use Usenet > SickBeard > sabNZBd > XBMC > CouchPotato combo. I couldnt get them anywhere else and zero of those annoying spanish ads. Celine Surico 23.09.2011	Yes, as mentioned much of American TV programs are very much calculated on getting the most out of advertisement revenue and viewer acceptance, to the degree that a huge majority of let's say sitcoms will fail as they care calculated scripts and thus super-boring. Sometimes someone dares to do something different and they get the viewer numbers until that concept is milked to death and competitors are doing copycat versions. Hmm, did I talk about the TV industry or the music industry now? At least It Is Sunny In Philadelphia started again so I could reserve a little bit time watching TV this autumn.

Mayra Depasse 19.09.2011	As far as I'm concerned, American TV is more entertaining than european TV. I'm talking about shows like Mad Men, Bored To Death, Community, Big Bang Theory and the like. With Hollywood there's just a lot more money in the entertainment industry in the US. So they can afford better actors, writing, production etc. On the other hand, I don't trust American news all that much. There's only black or white, liberal or conservative, democrats or republicans. They all seem kinda biased. And they're prude as hell, it's ridiculous. Oh and there's not enough football (soccer) on regular TV Actually, I don't even own a TV anymore, I just pick and choose what I like/want from whatever country I want over the internet. So to sum it all up, I love me some entertainment from over the pond, but to get educated I prefer good old europe. oh, I'm german, but afair french and spanish TV is pretty much the same.
