PC RAM upgrade

PC RAM upgrade
Posted on: 01.10.2013 by Loyd Cilek
Hello.

I recently upgrade to Windows 8 getting along with it okay, just wondering if a RAM upgrade is needed?

Current specs are as follows: Windows 8 Pro 64-bit, Intel Core2 CPU 4300 @ 1.80GHz, 2GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GT.

Using Ableton and haven't experienced any problems as yet but I'm not using any VSTs or anything yet.

If I was to upgrade, it would be to this: http://www.ebuyer.com/190905-crucial...kit25664aa1067

Thanks.

The card has DVI and VGA inputs, I only have a VGA cable so will buy a DVI.

Thanks
Unless you're sending audio, DVI is the best of the 3 as it supports the highest resolutions and refresh rates (if you use Dual Link).

There is a significant difference between VGA and HDMI/DVI; the latter two being digital which allows your graphics card to more accurately control what appears on your monitor. VGA should only ever be used if you have no alternative.

You only need one or the other haha. Make your mind up with VGA or DVI. Personally, I prefer DVI... Don't really know why I just believe the socket looks cool. VGA is pretty standard though. That's if the monitor has a DVI port as well of course. You can always buy a DVI to VGA port adapter but there really isn't any point considering your monitor has both VGA and DVI.

Mo mobo has a HDMI port but my NVidia graphics card doesn't, so I didn't know which was best to use? I assume to use the HDMI port on my mobo I'd have to use the integrated graphics card in the Intel processor but would that be less beneficial?

I hope that makes sense.
Indeed it would be. I believe just about any graphics card is probably better than an integrated graphics card (with a HDMI/VGA slot in the back of your computer). What you can do is see if you can purchase an adapter. My understanding of ports is HDMI is used more for TV such as a Sky/Virgin box... Whereas DVI/VGA are used more for computer usage. I guess you want to use HDMI right?

Well I need to find out which ports your nVidia card has. Here's an example:

Although I may not know a lot about DJing/music production.. I do know a lot about hardware & computing. Reply ASAP and I will be more than happy to help.

Just the one unfortunately. Thanks for the info on the splitter.

The two fans are 12v 1.44w 0.12A, do you reckon they'd run fine?

Agreed. But it seems the OP is OK building the system up, but less confident specifying matched components - this can take out the guess work for a few quid extra - peace of mind that the finished system will work well.

That's a very low current draw so it should be fine. I can't find any specs in the manual for your mobo but people have been throwing around figures like 0.5A and 1A as the limit for fan headers on older motherboards.

Okay, all the parts have arrived and am currently installing them now.

I have however, run into a problem, I have a front and rear fan in my case but only one sys_fan slot....I've read that you can daisy chain them into a molex so they run from the PSU but they am I right in assuming they will just run at 100% all of the time and therefore be very noisy?

That's a really outdated processor (Sandy Bridge), as is the RAM (1333MHz) and the motherboard (PCI slots).

I would go with an i3 or better processor from this list (Haswell), any of these motherboards (Socket 1150, H87 chipset), and 8GB of RAM from here (1600MHz).

Overclockers don't always have the best prices so look around elsewhere for the same components e.g. on Amazon or Aria etc.

Just had quick look on overclockers and found this, which seems to come in cheaper than buying stuff individually but not sure how it compares performance wise?

Can work out cheaper bang-for-buck too.
