And I will just add -- as I'm way late to this thread -- but I was there, both evening s. I was pissed to be honest, not because I didn't get to see him (I did - the next evening ), but because 1) I missed other sets I wanted to see to get into the Yuma tent early because the lines the previous day were a joke, and 2) no one said a thing. Literally. We were waiting around listening to Cassey (who was awesome, but oddly doesn't move. Like .. almost at all. Weirdest thing I've ever seen for a DJ to just not move) and 30 minutes past Hawtin's set time, we asked the security/sound guys in the back who all just said "oh, he's supposed to be on soon, don't worry". BS. Finally after an hour we left to move on elsewhere still not knowing why he didn't play until the next day when Coachella announced that he had an hour slot the next evening - which conflicted with other stuff that I would have wanted to see. It was frustrating because I left the Heiniken Dome from an awesome DJ Sneak & Doc Martin B2B set (which was insane btw - they had 4 CDJ's connected to two separate DJM-900's, so each was playing at least one or more tracks at the same time giving each other hand signals of when they were going to drop the bass, etc. It was awesome to watch) to run over and wait in a huge line to get in to see Hawtin for only like 35 minutes because he only had an hour set - he was given time by Maya Jane Coles, Loco Dice, and Jamie Jones.

To get to the point - I was standing sort of next to and under the booth and could see his traktor computer screen clearly (well, from like 25 feet away). He was basically playing A --> B the whole way with C/D set up as loops that ran for long periods of time. Being below him it was impossible to know which loops he had actually playing (audibly I mean), but one was looping for at least 15 minutes that I saw nonstop. On the plus side, the tent/dome they had him in sounded AMAZING. It was great, by far the best sound in the venue - much better than the Sahara tent where all the EDM guys were. Such a good set up for that venue, and the fact that there was AC was key. I had ear plugs in - it was too loud I would say for anyone over 24 years old, but nevertheless, it was done very well. Here's some video that I took of DJ Sneak/Doc Martin and Hawtin. My phone was dying so I had to keep them short...

I should have added - the last picture I attached is of DJ Dan smiling at me from behind the decks, wearing a Sneak House Gangster bandanna. Pretty awesome. Dan came on after Mike Balance, who was pretty damn good himself. He was nice enough to chat with me a bit after I got excited when he played Wink & Lil' Louis' "How's Your Evening So Far."

My MAIN point being, you can DJ perfectly fine without the use of monitors. Just use your headphones! That's my point.
He was probably fuming about having to travel a few hundred miles, ending up with sound system that didn't work properly and sacrificing the possibility of playing 2 or 3 gigs in the same evening elsewhere

I for one NEVER enjoy a gig where there are no monitors, and no, I will not play live as well without them - sure no problem at home when everything outside is all quiet, or even if I'm a resident and know the way things sound without them and how to compensate. But in a club playing for the first time without them I'd be a grumpy boy very fast.

But I'm not a big enough name to have a contract stating that I'll walk away if the gear I need isn't provided.

Thank you to everyone that came tothe VIVa party, was great and a good vibe, but can i just say, did anyone notice both me and phillip from M.A.N.D.Y had problems with he playing? There was a half second delay with what was coming out of the headphones and the monitor! Ive never experienced this before! I dont use a laptop to mix! Or hit sync button! I mix manually! So was an absolute evening mare! Detlef noticed it and scrapped playing timecode traktor vinyls and used his laptop to hit sync button! Then they fixed it for sahsa at the end! I asked enough times for them to sort it out but they didnt, was so frustrating! But the vibe was actually good. Thanks to everyone thay came,
I was wrong about the other thing, it was Detlef but he did switch methods anyway. He was playing on controllers and the mixer with Traktor instead of timecode vinyl.

I believe that people really overrate Richie Hawtin's technical capacities sometimes. He doesn't do that much and to be honest, he doesn't need to. As long as he's making the music interesting and fun to listen and dance to, it's all good. Sometimes that one extra loop is what makes the set good because, let's face it, minimal techno and tech house are good genres, but get really boring if you're only listening to single tracks.

From the sets i've seen and heard of Hawtin, his mixing is pretty ordinary, taking in consideration the gear he uses

Yeah seems odd he couldn't manage (your bloke, not Darius). How big a headliner was he?
My first gig on CDJs was without a monitor AND one of the decks was coming through all muffled and quiet on the headphones so it was almost impossible to tell if it was beatmatched. Was an experience but still managed to enjoy it!

Cheers, handed it in a bit ago but still had no sleep. Got another 1000 word assignment to do toevening , for tomorrow but it'll seem like nothing so long as I manage to get some sleep asap.

No problem.

Sometimes via a community it's hard to get a point across without it coming off as a sarcastic ego comment (which mine usually are, but not in this case). It just seems strange, but Darius is a pretty straight up guy and knows his shit, so I'll probably ask him and maybe he can shed some light on it.

I was running a evening once and the monitors went down in the first couple of hours with no spares, all the other DJs coped fine but when the headline act came on, every track was galloped and a train wreck and after first few tracks he stormed off and refused to play. I was fuming as I just couldn't understand why he just couldn't use his headphones!

Obviously, blame on both parts, always have spare monitors! But your headphones are there for that instance! I've had it the other way round where my headphones have given up on me so for the next two tracks I've used the lights on the mixer and getting up close to the monitors until I got find spare headphones. Not ideal as you can imagine.

Good luck with the dissertation. (Best thing I ever did was get out of that in my final year).

It's not like cdj's are foreign to Hawtin. He played on cdj's and vinyl for years.

I don't really care one way or the other. I just believe he could have turned it into a special show and the crowd would have loved it. I don't know that I've ever seen a dj cancel a show because of technical difficulties. Hell, I've seen guys play on 1 deck because they had to and the crowd was still into it.

I agree. Richie is a party pooper. A festival is supposed to be a massive party. He threw all his toys out of the pram like a baby. With his profile he must have access to plenty of exclusive tunes so a CDJ set could still sound 'fresh' to peoples ears. Besides surely most people attending wont give a shit what he uses apart from the music tech nerds. x

That's what tech riders and contracts are for. Venue/promoter provides them and they are responsible. It's not like it was Coachella's fault that Hawtin's HDD's didn't work, is it?

Like when I saw Cox performing a house set at DC10. Something different = more interesting, better vibe. So what if it wasn't up to his usual standard? He's a DJ, not an architect. A decent crowd would/should understand.
The fact and the way he actually asked others to give up time from their slots seemed on the arrogant side as well. But then he's known for that.

Richie and Carl are definitely not the only ones who do this.

Really? Delay Reverb pedal is the same as 4 CDJs going or Four Traktor Decks and Maschine? Yes Chris Leibing has a very intense setup too.. but ive seen him play so many times and he barely puts the effort that the other two do. Beyer? Len Faki... really? We clearly have a different idea how we compare those artist. They hardly do the same thing... ::shrug:: oh well

Nor did I say they were the ONLY ones.. I said they were the ONLY ones who impress me with it.. a Delay/Reverb pedal and the other acts you mentioned, arent event remotely as entertaining.

Its pretty easy to compare as Loco normally opens just before Richie goes on, during their most recent tour
