post dubstep is actually a genre in reaction to how agressive dubstep became in my opinion it's more a concept than a genre. For me artists such as SBTRKT,James Blake,Flying Lotus and all warp artists are "post-dubstep".

If you take Genres to their enth degree, you end up with everything sounding the same, which is shit and boxes in artists and leaves less room to experiment.

One thing I'm glad of is that within Deep House there is quite a variation. Tech House can be quite samey between tracks.

Electro is just an abomination and seems to bear no relation to the original Electro, which had some phenomenal tracks.

I believe the worst is what beatport calls progressive house.
It should be called "POP"

I believe the prefix "proto" is even more pretentious and would be eminently more satisfying if one wished to establish ones superior levels of "coolness" over the plebs

Another reason why I don't use Beatport, it really is a terrible site IMHO. I also got this email and noticed quite a few DJ's posting it on FB - have not seen one positive reaction yet.

Call me cynical but I see it as an attempt by Beatport to lead or create subgenres in order to build 'hype' on them, therefore pulling unsuspecting customers in and buying it under the banner of the 'next best thing'.

Dont forget post-rock and post-metal....both of which kinda point to a fairly defined sound but are still useless terms anyway.

Completely agree. The major flaw in all those genres is that Dubstep, Hardcore and Techno haven't disappeared or died out. Anything new is a derivative not something instead of.

Why can't post dubstep just be dubstep, but newer.

I believe I'm "Post Genres"

The only "Post" genre that was ever acceptable was "Post Punk". A whole slew of bands came around, born from punk but sounding modern and more directional. They were bands formed during punk but took it in a genuinely new direction. No genre name ever really summed it up as well as "Post Punk" did. It wasn't Nu-Punk cus it was different to punk but it was related to punk.
Bands such as Killing Joke, PiL, The Cure (early).

Then bands such as Bauhaus and later The Sisters Of Mercy came along and the term Goth was coined and that was that. I fucking hate the name Goth.

The more you know.

I immediately want to punch people when they describe their taste in music as "post" anything. I hate that word when describing genres...

If you ask me, there's only 3 genres of (electronic) music; Trance (> 128bpm), Commercial (128bpm) and R'n'B (< 128bpm).

EDIT: At least we can now categorize Random Access Memories as "Neo New Wave".
Where does techno and tech house fit?

Wow.

I believe you're missing a fundamental point (well, more than one...), but BPM does not define genre.

Culture, influences and a definable mood, outlook is what makes a genre.

You had to google Boards of Canada?

Where does drum and bass/jungle fit into your world of genres?

Though without doubt my favourite has to be "slow/fast" Whoever came up with that must have been splitting their sides at getting paid for such a name How VAGUE can a genre be? That's like calling a genre "some sounds played together".

Beatport are so two years ago anyway, I'm currently riding the rising wave of Underwater Egyptian-hop Jazztronicacore, some big names coming up like Imhotep?Noshehotep! and PiPiPiPikkiRikkiTikkiTembo. Watch this space!

Genres are useless unless you want to stick to a narrow niche
2 categories for me.

1 - Music I like
2 - Music to DJ with.

Music that falls into both categories generally makes playlists.
