So just a handful of small retailers, makes sense that they have stock as most don't turn up on any web searches.

DJKit, Phase One, DjSuperstore, Djtech direct, pegasus sound and light.

Decks.co.uk, ChemicalRecords, DV247, Juno, Thomann are all out of stock. What are these big retailers again?

You can learn to practice on software and hardware. You get audio interfaces built in to the mixer.

You get to play mp3's/WAV and Vinyl

You get the best tactile feel in the business.

You have a pretty professional set-up, which you wont need to upgrade when you get better. Just add to.

Buy your stuff second hand, and if you don't feel it's for you, you can sell it on, and make back pretty much most (if not all) of your money.

Can be had for the same cost as a high end controller.

You can post on here, with absolute arrogance, KNOWING you are a REAL DJ because you have the 1210's...
Cool, where should I get this Pioneer from? any cheapish companies which sell it, preferably UK based?

First download virtual dj home. Figure out how everything works. Then after a month or two figure out if you truly love djing. Personally, I had a mix track pro and I loved it. Now the mix track pro 2 seems great. The traktor s2 is a bit pricer but great aswell. Just get well informed on each controller, what they can do and can't do and also the price range you're looking for. Also do you want to be a controllerist? A vinyl dj? a cdj? Also you can probably check craigslist and get some used gear off of there as well. Lastly if you live near a guitar center or sam ash head out to one and check out what they have on display, usually they have some dj sets that you can touch and or play with.

To each his own, but I'm telling you, doing silly stuff with grid triggers isn't going to help you decide if you like DJing, it'll help you decide if you like doing silly stuff with grid triggers. There's not a whole lot that carries over into djing. It's also much much harder to set up and get into than DJing is. If it's what you want to do, do it, but not under the pretense that it is you getting into performing.

Whatever you do, don't listen to all the fanboys on here when they tell you to buy an S2.

if you're down with the bedroom performer thing, do that if it appeals to you, but if you want to play for people, you need to DJ. (or get famous as a producer... Then it doesn't matter what you do live)

yeah i believe it will take me a while to get really good, so maybe i should be a bedroom dj for the time being, purchase a midi controller, see if i have a feel for it, and maybe purchase some proper decks in the future. anyone have a midi controller? or reccomend any?

A lot of us are talking about CDJs now that the 2000's have HID mode with Traktor... But I feel liek all in all, CDJs are the least popular of the three control platforms on this community , despite being BY FAR the msot popular in the actual industry.
The only reason I believe they are the least popular on the community is because the models that support MIDI/HID are all quite expensive compared to a MIDI Controller.

How come a lot threads theses days end up in a pissing match of some sort?

This thread went from helping the OP decide what to start with, to crap about what is used in clubs. Really??
If you want to argue those points how about starting a new thread. Or post in one of the many threads where it has already been discussed ad naseum.

The OP was looking for a little guidance from those with more knowledge/experience about what gear is good for a beginning DJ. How about giving some more information on why you recommend something, or why you disagree with some one else's opinion on what to start with. You know information the OP can actually use to make a decision.

In case you missed it.........

Tbh I don't understand this belief that controllers aren't used in clubs... someone should start a "controller spotting" thread tbh, would prove VERY quickly just how wrong that idea is.

Hell, here's TWO Kontrol S2s being used in a venue that was absolutely jam-packed:

Absolutely...i started on vinyl ages ago...but these days I prefer CDJs or full digital with controllers and Traktor.

Pretty much what everyone else is saying. It would probably be a good idea to trial many of the different programs out their first. I would trial Traktor, Serato and VDJ and then figure out which one you like most. Then work out a budget for some gear and try and find a controller that comes with the software i.e. Kontrol S2/S4 with Traktor, DDJ-SX with Serato, etc.

I believe the Kontrol S2 would be a good place to start and I know from experience. But that's just my opinion, everyone is different. Good luck.
