Decribe what EDM is to you
Posted on: 19.07.2013 by Wynell Muma
Ok so there is loads of confusion around this thing called 'EDM' which is short for 'electronic dance music' I do believe. The confusion comes from what music is classed as 'EDM'. Some say it is any genre of dance music but to me, I don't believe it is. When I believe of EDM I believe of things like electro house, commercial dance music, obscene dubstep. Artists like Knife party or skrillex fit the bill quite well!

However I don't believe that things like deep house or techno for example comes under the phrase EDM. yes it is dance music however it's a more underground scene. It's a completely different circle of people than what I would class as EDM fans. Does anyone else agree?

I've been told that my latest mix is classed as EDM but I wouldn't class it as that at all

What are your thoughts on this?

Of course it's EDM. It's house music, not brass band or Peruvian panflute music.

anything a regular cluber would call techno. they get up to you and ask if you only going to play Techno all evening then you know your playing EDM even if you have not played 1 Techno song the whole evening

What the words describe is an extremely broad range of music. What it's usually used to describe is basically dumbed down vocal versions of house and tranced mixed together with the occasional guest appearance by hip hops own version of dumbed down 'artists'.

EDM, is not a genre. It's an umbrella that a whole lot of dance music is being thrown under. Electronic Dance Music is not new. You've only got to look at the likes of Kraftwerk, Herbie Hancock, people like that. They've been making "EDM" since the late 70's / early 80's.
It's a phrase thats been coined to sell the new dance music of today.

On a plus note, these kids are the new generation. These kids will get bored of the mainstream "EDM" and then they will turn to more underground stuff. These are the kids who will be watching Tom Middleton and the like in a few years.

But, this EDM sound has killed Ibiza. Beer boy chavs bouncing around to Richie Hawtin when hes playing weird as fuck minimal ploddy techno.

There is NOTHING "EDM" about your mix.

EDM to me is mainstream noise what all the kids like. These kids like Avicii, Guetta, Romero. Shit, basically.

This too - the term seems to have been coined by our American Cousins to Differentiate between some other styles of dance music (E.g. R&B and Hip Hop)

Its a term I wont use EVER in so far as it makes no differentiation between any particular musical style.

Its a bit like throwing Rock, Acoustic, Classical, Metal, Garage, Grunge, Punk into pot and calling it "Guitar Music"

Hahahahaha this.

I actually don't get what's so wrong with the term EDM - just because electronic music is getting popular doesn't make the term stupid. It's so much better than calling everything "techno" anyway.

I look at it as being this generation's version of "electronica". a meaningless, unneeded term that the media came up with because they're lazy.

I take it to mean the person using it has no idea what they're talking about. Or possibly they know what they're talking about, but neither I nor anyone else have a clue what they're talking about, because they've used the term EDM. Either way, it's bad

When I hear people use that term I tend to assume they're talking about Electro House, or maybe electro house and commercial dubstep.
