Hawtin Effect
Posted on: 02.11.2009 by Esta Christi
Hey guys,

this has buggin me for a while now, hawtin always uses this one effect in his sets, i cant figure out how he does it and its really hard to descibe it here. il give it a shot though: the effect sounds kinda like the pioneer robot effect and once he starts it he increses the "pitch" (maybe better to say frequency i mean how "high" it sounds) building up a drop in itself. it completely distorts the original sound. if any of u guys have the song handy, assign the source by reboot has a similar effect at 4:17. any ideas? cant find it in traktor pro.

Cheers!

That's practically the same principal where instead of mapping FX to second button you simply go ahead and apply it for your first button command.

no prob, I'm in the process of simplifying the .tsi so it isn't such a mess.

in the meantime here's a description based on this pic ---> photo (3).jpg

[Exit Set-up Button] map to select advanced mode for FX1 & FX2, along w/ Tape Delay on FX1 and Delay on FX2.
[K Button] Sets knob 1, 2, 3 parameters & D/W on FX1 & FX2. Remember FX1 need D/W @0% on FX1. Also this button also needs to turn FX1 "ON". This is key, because the unit must start in "ON" position to capture the effect.
[G Button] Activate button 2 & 3 on FX1, while turning "OFF" the FX1. Also, reset's D/W to 0%.
[C Button] Activates Delay on FX2. wich causes the track to freeze.
[Left Fader in pic] controls the DW on FX 1 to bring in the Hawtin effect
[Middle Fader in pic] Controls Knob 3 on FX1 to speed up or slow down the effect.

Hope that helps. I'll post .tsi when i'm done on this thread.

Stewe, do you mind sharing the .tsi file for your Livid CNTRLr just isolaating the (2) buttons & (1) fader you use w/ any mods for the Dub Fire effect? That may be an easy way to share the info without having to re-write everything in a post? Thx bro.

It seems the video on here has been deleted, but I bookmarked it some time ago, not sure if it's the exact same one, but I have one here and it is just superb, quick easy and simple to follow. I'm not even great with all this techy stuff, but I followed this video and had the Richie Hawtin effect in Ableton in 15 minutes or less. If you wanna know how to get this effect, then watch this.

I'm pretty sure Dubfire uses the Ramp delay with the Feedback button turned ON (3rd par. in advanced mode) on 1/16 and 2nd par. at just about 9/10 o'clock or something

Cool! I missed the fact the unit must be engaged with d/w down to zero before messing with effect - nice find Just made a button which directly turns unit off and fire up freeze, increased d/w a bit and there it was.

You should add this to ultimate FX thread for sure.

It takes a workaround inverting "Unit On". Use freeze while D/W is at 0% to capture the effect. And so the track doesn't freeze. Increase D/W to bring in the R. Hawtin effect over the track, while increasing Knob 3 to speed it up. Check this out: Hawtin Effect Audio Clip

In this clip I slowly bring in the Hawtin effect during the breakdown. And increase up until the drop. Then hit the delay button just before the drop for the slight pause.

I'm still trying to mess w/ the parameters to get the best sound. I couldn't do a vid w/ good sound so I just recorded this out of Traktor.

Also, I'm gonna try to figure out the Dub Fire effect next. Thanks for your help bro, appreciate being able to collaborate w/ someone like you.

I didn't save this tsi mate, I made it just for video purpose and it's pretty simple to achieve so I haven't include mapping file in first place.

1st button: Triggers T3 delay (single) and reverb+delay (group) - hold type button. This combo use two units!
2nd button: Rete button for T3 delay in single mode.
Fader: Rate parameter for T3 delay.

I know for Tape delay in single FX mode and how it speed up and down the rate in similar way that Richie uses it but you need to freeze it first right?

I'm pretty sure he's not freezing any of tracks when dropping that effect in his sets. I'll look for replicate this but ether of delays in traktor simply doesn't sound that organic without adding some other effect in combination.

Dunno. But that can be one of possibilities.

And really? so you can actually just hit and FX button on the X1 and it'll always trigger that same sample and let off the same sound?
Yes. There is a retrigger command under remix deck drop menu which can cause any of sample slots to play momentary as long as that slot is in one-shot mode.

I can only use 2 of my traktor decks need to use all 4 tbh... new mixer needed..

Just drop it on hi hats and it should sound the same for each track. Eventually you can associate it to sample to trigger it anytime

Okay ive had a little play about and ive kinda ot both Dubfire's and Hawtins effect, both with the delay!
Obviously gotta just play about more..

But tell me, when dubfire uses this effect at the 1:00 mark on the vid i posted, is he just applying that effect over the track he is playing, or? because it ALWAYS sounds the same when he does it, so im believeing that hes somehow got a sample saved with that effect and he just triggers it or... Because how can every track give off the same sound effect with it?

Just got a little confused!

Dubfire effect

Group mode: Delay / d/w - 0.400 / par - 0.700 (unit 1)
Single mode: Delay T3 / d/w - 0.450 / par1 - 0.800 / par2 - 0.780 / par3 - 1.000 / button 2,3 - 0ff (unit 2)

FX ON button activate both at same time, just make sure to set both for interaction hold!

Thanks for taking your time to help mate. I'm currently using TSP2 and Kontrol X1's, So you could you possibly take a screen shot of exactly how the Traktor FX parameter knobs are turned? I like how you had it at 0:33 of your vid.
