Akai APC40 MIDI Layout
Posted on: 03.06.2009 by Estela Follansbee
I'm starting to create a MIDI mapping of the APC 40 in Traktor and wanted to share the layout key I made. It displays all of the MIDI note and CC values and the respective channels for each button.

I was going to try and use the APC40 in combination with the Vestax VCI-100, but unfortunately there are many duplicate notes and CCs. This means functionality out-of-the-box may be compromised, but there is probably a workaround using Bome's MIDI Translator, MAX, or just waiting till Max for Live comes out.

Otherwise, I may come up with a complete mapping just using the APC40 for fun. It probably won't be as intuitive as using the VCI-100, but it may result in an interesting take on using Traktor. A little more of a monome feel. After all, I was able to break sports records and rescue a princess only using a directional pad and two buttons. Anyone using a monome to control Traktor? What are some ideas people would like to see implemented in a mapping?

***UPDATE: I posted a very basic mapping in a new thread to get people started with the APC40.

I've been looking for a 4 deck set up w my APC40 and you've done it! Awesome!

Can I ask for a favor as we're here to learn from one another. I tried setting my APC40 with my Audio2 and PC Laptop but for what ever reason, the lights do not appear on the APC. Is there a specific way of assigning each knob and fader?

Here is a MIDI map I made for the APC40. I used Traktor Pro to set it up. I just bought TP two days ago so I'm sure it will change. I made CH1 volume for tempo fader, CH2 volume for DECK A, 3 is blank etc...
Template to come. Hot keys for deck a and b are across the top. Another feature is I used the knobs in the upper right for FX select. Turn the dial and it kills the FX. Nice kill switch if it gets crazy. Sorry no pic of the layout as of now.
Hope it works for you

I did this a while back and posted it here. There is a bit of modality in the APC40 mapping, which is probably why you guys are seeing different results. The APC40 (or any other controller) doesn't send different messaging depending on what application is being used to monitor it's output. All values are in hex because that's primarily how I work with MIDI, but it's not a big deal to convert to whatever you need. I also cover MIDI into the ACP40 in this map.

Because the output channels are meaningful (channels 1-8 correspond to channel strips 1-8, ch9 is for scene launching, and master functions also piggyback ch1.) I don't believe you're going to be able to change the channel the APC sends on (which channel would you change?) That said, if you are mapping this into Traktor, you don't need to worry about overlap. In Live, of course, it's a different story.

Hey guys thanks for those messages.

RT24 i remove them because they are to close to each other, and i like to be very expresive with my volume faders so everytime i was doing that i continued to move the tempo and screwing my mix, thats why i eliminate them.

Deco, i used a clear transfer paper, is used to do publicity and that kind of stuff, is a material sold through publicity companies i had to buy a whole square meter, and they print it on a huge printer, i believe u can find it there, i can give u the blueprint that i used. The .tsi isnt the one that i posted before this is a new one, i will post it very soon.

Again tahnks for your help and comments...

thanks for your hard work

Hehe your apc40 looks very similar to mine. I found it kind of funny though that you removed half of the faders. Half of mine are volume ones but the other ones I just made them tempo faders.

Very nice set-up regardless.

So hello guys.

Finally i believe i finished my .tsi for the apc 40 and traktor, after a lot of research and hard work i believe i have a preety solid thing going on here.

So, im doing some tests right now, field test to make sure everything is ok and post the .tsi, but meanwhile i recorded a little video as a preview of this.

Again sorry for my english, my contact info is on the video i hope u like what i did.

Hi there guys, finally when i was finishing my .tsi i figure it out that i could have done it so much better, but anyways i would share i with you an uncomplete version of it.

This mapping has to be load through de import button that appears as soon as you open the configuration window on traktor pro, because its composed by several .tsi

Hi there....

Im finishing up my .tsi

Soon i will share it and also post an image explaining how it works.

I have many ideas to make it better but, Midi is a serious limitation for some things with the APC+TP. Once i finish this .tsi i will try to study the bomes to make it even better.

My mapping makes de apc work like the Vestax TR-1, with some things stolen from the VCI100 DJTT map, so its working very nice. Give me a couple of week and i will end it.

Greets mates.
