M-AUDIO X-SESSION PRO layouts

Hello All,

The X-Session Pro seems to be a great starting-off MIDI Controller, extremely light and configurable. I was wondering what other users of this device have done to set-it up for use with Traktor. I am still experimenting but seem to have settled on:

Top Knobs and Faders -
keeping the far-left-hand colum for effects (knobs only), the middle two columns as my normal A-B channels (decks 1 & 2), and the far-right-hand column as a bonus channel C (deck 3).

The Crossfader -
Using this as a normal cross fader (ie not using it :P

Play/Pause Button and the one next to it for loops. Not using the two keys above it.

I use the T2 L/H Filter and the FX Layout for the far-left-hand column i have is top knob = Amount, middle knob = Hi, Bottom knob = Low.

I am interested as to what other configurations have been made.

you'll need a small flathead screwdriver or similiar to get it underneath the rubber feet, they are just stuck there with adhesive. Just lift them off, this reveals the remaining screws to remove the case - the adhesive is good enough that they can be stuck back on and not fall off
Then the plastic knobs/faders can be levered off. Be gentle with them but they should come off fairly easily. I was afraid of breaking it but once you get one off you'll realise the amount of force it takes.

the top and bottom case parts should come apart fairly easy now.

Don't work? As in "I move the sliders and it makes no change to the sound" or as in "I move the sliders and the wrong thing happens"? I use my decks with the "key lock" button always selected so check that that's selected.

Check it out by adding a "key" panel to the top line of controls (right click on an empty spot on the panel bar and select "Key"). You should be able to see the knob rotate as you move the slider. If not, I screwed up somewhere.

Facinating - the rubber keys just activate normal tactile switches. I'd never have guessed. Thank you for sharing!

The sliders move and zilch happens. I'm waiting with anticipation for my presonus firebox to arrive any moment today and I'll set things up, then try your kind suggestions.

Thank you -- and by the way, you have a calming zen like manner that comes across in your posts. If only you could be right beside me to influence my lack of knowledge.

I'll keep you posted.

Okay it's been a little bit but I've finally had a chance to sit down and MIDI out. I downloaded a copy of MIDIMonitor so I could see what was going on and for the most part I can't see why anything would be a problem both of them are running on CH1 and are sending different signals all together. Tried to map them in traktor once again the other controller is non responsive. So decided to do a little test and plugged them in and ran them in ableton and both were mapped in seconds but still no dice in traktor. So any ideas of whats going on? I'm starting to believe it can't be done but I'm really hoping some one will prove me wrong.

In this article I found these two for mac:

- MidiPipe, http://homepage.mac.com/nicowald/SubtleSoft/
- MIDI Monitor, http://www.snoize.com/MIDIMonitor/

Hope these can be of use?

MIDIyoke looks more like what I need but still on windows... The thing that's bothering me is that I know it can be done and maybe I'm on the right track I found this post in the NI user community (2nd to last post)

If they're broken you can fix those - the drivers less so.

Install MIDI-OX, enable the MIDI devices as inputs and try tweaking knobs to see that they're sending what you believe they're sending, and that the don't interfere with each other. Report back what you find.

I tried with Enigma, but it doesn't seem to work.
Should Enigma remain open when Traktor is running?

I'm doing something kind of similar... and having some extreme problems. I'm attempting to use to XSP's together to control all 4 decks the problem I'm having is that they are hooked up to a usb hub which is plugged into my computer. I've tried switching everything around in enigma and nothing happened, the advice I got from m-audio was totally bunk, so now I'm pretty much right back where I started. From my understanding the problem I'm having is that my XSP's are sending the same signal out (maybe I'm wrong, before I thought I could just plug in anything and map it.) I can see them both in Traktor but they have the same IN and OUT. Is there anyway I can fix this? Did I do something wrong in enigma maybe?

You don't need to run enigma with traktor, once enigma programs your x-session you never really need it again (unless you intend on reprogramming it)

For future reference
to program the midi channel on the X-Session Pro:

1. Install Enigma Version 1.2 followed by the X-Session Pro updater (Windows XP Links)

2. Connect and turn on the XSP, Run Enigma.

3. Under "Devices and Files" window (top left) select the X-Session Pro (with the red orb) then in the "Presets" window (bottom left) select preset number 8 (Right CUE Button)

4. In the bottom left of Enigma there is a button to switch between graphic view and list view, switch it to list view.

5. Now you should see all the controls on the unit listed in the main window. By double clicking the values in the "Ch" (Channel) column you can change the value from '0' to '2' (to set the controller to channel 2) for every control on the XSP.

6. once you have changed every control to channel 2 click on the "Send the Current Bank to the Device" button (third button above the "Devices and Files" window.

7. Once it has finished sending the new values to the controller (should only pop up for a second or two) you need to recall these settings from the controller otherwise it will forget them when you turn it off.

To recall the settings you just sent you need to press the "A" button on the back of the XSP (i recommend a 3.5mm headphone jack ) and within 3 seconds of pressing this button press the right cue button on the unit:

You can now switch off the XSP, exit enigma and cancel any message it has about saving the configuration.

When you turn your XSP on again it will now be sending its midi commands over channel 2 - Traktor's midi learn should report this aswell, if it doesn't you did something wrong or i missed something in this guide.

Hopefully this is really easy to understand (short of posting a heap of screenshots)

Good Luck!

hi guys, this is my first post.

I'm using the xsession pro as my main tool - I guess i would say I'm semi-pro in that i make about 50% of my income from playing at the moment, maybe a bit less : )

when the xsession came it was what i was looking for but now it seems there's a whole slew of other devices on the market that could do the same and more. Basically i wanted DJ mixer functions, FX control and the ability to start and stop the decks, but don't need the jog wheels that most controllers have.

I'm using:

top four pots on each side control FX parameters
low is still low used for kills
pot 3 on the left is phones mix
pot 3 on the right is phones volume

cue select, pitch faders, start stop and loop are all as intended.

volumes control deck gains

small lower left button is sync
small lower right button is FX select

I might get a Kenton killamix to add a few more pots and buttons, altho i don't like the price.

That means if you also map something to that key that works while the key is held down, *cough*MIDI-page-select*cough*, you can get a whole page of different actions for every other control on the device active only while you hold down the play/cue key. The same goes for the loop-enable or headphone-cue keys (is that true? need to check that last one).

Its a crafty way to get a lot more out of the device - I haven't added it to my TKS yet but it's on the cards when I have an evening.
Sounds great! Please let me know how and if it works, as I am on the verge of buying a new MIDI controller.
