controller decision

Now before you jump on me, i have searched a TON around on these community s for ideas and info.. But i would really appreciate it if you guys could help me out, my main focus with djing will ideally be house trance techno. I dont have any urge to do any scratching related stuff but i do want to be able to mess around a lot with effects, cause that what i want my djing style to develop into.. clean mixing with awesome added in effects.. Mainly, i would really just like to have a solid beginner controller, with or without a sound card because i can buy an audio 2 if needed, my budget is not big at all, i just have a few focused needs, solid effects capabilities, good build quality.. idk i guess thats it, the main controllers i have looked at are the mixtrack/mixtrack pro... the hercules 4-mx.. maybe the rmx? idk stuff that is in that price category, the 4-mx is a little high priced.. i would really appreciate input guys thankyou!!

Well out of those options either the VMS4 or the 4MX would be the better choice for your budget, as they both have internal soundcards. The VCI would be great, but then you would need to get an external soundcard. This is better in a way cos then you would have better sound quality than the others, but it would cost you more than $500. Maybe try looking for a 2nd hand VCI and soundcard, that might fit inside your budget.

Mine certainly has no nasty buzzing noises under any circumstances so guess yours was faulty.
Yeah I never had any issues with my soundcard until now. The only issue I had was that it isnt the best quality soundcard around, but I supopose you cant have a 24bit soundcard running on USB power alone.

The soundcard isn't half bad either considering its integrated, and you can use the phono/line inputs as well if you wanna go time code at some stage..

I bought a hercules rmx and had it for about a day. I found that the soundcard was shit. When I had speakers plugged into it there was a constant buzz even with no audio going through. I'm sure the buttons work fine and faders and such maybe, but the sound card was a joke.

JUST GET A VCI-100!!!

i believe my best 2 options are the rmx, or the steel with the a2dj? what do you believe would be a better decision, or in all honestly should i scratch em both and go with something else, i looked at the steel and rmx and compared as much as i could.. i know they look a little bit different but i cant seem to find any real differences with performance or effects capabilities? as always info is appreciated!!

Picked up a gently-used Stanton SCS system last week on eBay, looking forward to playing with it. Got lots of good reviews on here and was heavily suggested to me on Blacklabelled. Have someone buying my Numark mixer on Craigslist, so this will be my main mixer between my 2 TT's, should be fun.

edit: just looked on my doorstep and it was there. this thing is badass.

I use the Hercules Steel along with a MidiFighter and an Audio2 Soundcard. And while I would love to get my hands on an S4, I just finished an in depth mapping allowing me to use the Steel with 4 decks using the two volume faders, pitch faders and just about every other button for the two new decks. The only thing I'm basically missing is high-res jog wheels and a few extra banks for "sampling" like the S4. But I don't do much beat juggling, so I'm a happy camper.

Moral of the story, start with something cheaper, you may not need to dish out as much as you thought.

haha .. the budget is getting bigger

$150 increase in a few days :P .. hold on for 2 weeks and you'll be getting an s4 ...4 weeks and it'll be a 4D hehe.

Personally I dont see the need for an external effects unit unless you're going semi analogue ala CDJ's .. Traktors effects are damn good and plenty to play with initially, you can always route Traktor through Ableton if you get bored hehe.

the vsm4 does look nice, all these choices!!! i have a question now, if i have around the 500 to spend should i look at just getting a controller for mixing effects and stuff or should i believe about a controller and a seperate effects controller like NI or Pioneer have out? all these options!!

Suprised the VMS4 by american audio has not been mentioned if your "real" budget is $450 ..

Check it out .. again, I havent got my greasy fingers on one yet but it made my pupils dilate when I saw it .. the fact that it'll work without a laptop as a mixer is pretty cool.

I have the RMX and its great. It was the first controller I bought, and use it regularly for gigging. I've mapped it perfectly for TP and its solid as hell. It also has a built in soundcard, which is very convenient. These days you can probably pick one up for about $300 which fits well within your budget right?

You will find most of the members here promoting then VCI which is a great controller but maybe just out of your budget. the 4MX looks great too, but its expensive and for that price I would go for the VCI instead. Get the RMX and practice on that for a while and then try upgrading from there.

lol, what. i believe i get what youre saying, yeah when it comes out they will find issues and bugs, but arent those fixed by updates? what im saying is, i will only be using it at home for quite some time so if there are issues its not gonna effect me with gigs and what not haha, and they will be fixed with updates

yes but cant the majority of the issues be solved by driver/firmware updates and stuff? or do you mean hardware issues, the rmx seems really nice but if i can spend 450-500 then wouldnt there be better quality available for me?

31.10.2010
well somebody had the same thought process of u did and was going between rmx and the 4mx, what i told him is that with all new controller releases, they always have bugs and issues when they first come out, if i were u, i would buy a used rmx, get handy with that, keep an eye on the 4mx and make sure all the bugs and errors are fixed after it is out, and then buy it.

what do you believe? or around that range is the vci100se better or what, im not sure haha its such a tough decision!!!

Hello,
i'm definetely happy with my stanton SCS3 system (scs3m + 2 scs3d) and an hercules trim.
I had some problems with my stanton in the very beginning, but it was a buggy one that was changed with a new one from italian distributor.

I'm not doing scratching, just four decks mixing and effect. In my opinion the scs3 system is the smartest device for 4 decks and effect. Maybe the S4 is going in the same direction.

I forgot about the Numark Mixtrak pro, havent seen one in the flesh, I thought it looked a lil "toyish" in any photos and its quite light too .. the jogs look VERY nice though.

By non-touch I mean the jog wheels are not touch sensitive on the RMX .. I use a modifier key at the same time to simultaneously stop/scratch/spinback.

For techno / trance / house though i don't really see the benefit of touch sensitivity .. maybe just me.

These are my recommendations:
Numark Mixtrack + Soundcard
Numark Mixtrack Pro
Hercules Steel + Soundcard
Hercules RMX

Use the software that comes with the controller/soundcard to start with, and get a pair of headphones you can afford. All in all, any of those above will stay within your budget.

... I honestly had a deal where I could have picked up a VCI-300 for $400 *used* and I'm kicking myself for not doing so. If you watch closely and get lucky, you can find higher quality controllers for good prices. But it's not easy.

Hercules rmx is a great and solid lump of kit, I've had mine for about 2 years and its not let me down...Its built like a tank and has the weight to match!

The soundcard isn't half bad either considering its integrated, and you can use the phono/line inputs as well if you wanna go time code at some stage..

Under $350 I seriously don't believe you could do any better.

DJ Tech stuff seems to be very hit and miss on the QC ) even the Kontrol One/KDJ500 designer has mentioned issues.

Only misgiving about it is the non touch ..meh .. its no biggie for trance / techno .

Works pretty well as an Ableton controller too

i'm in the same point!!! i don't know if i buy the Hercules Steel (the same RMX but without interface) or the Dj Tech I-Mix reload with a NI audio 2 dj interface. This last one i like it 'cause the touch jog wheels but i have been reading a lot in community s and some people made bad comments about it. so i'm in a dilemma!!! if you can guide me about this 2 console i will thank you a lot!!!! i have the $99 for the interface and $250 for the console so my budget it's not much!!!!

looking at the vci 100SE it does seem good, although its definitely pricey.... i would really like to stay sub-$400 if anyone has any better ideas as far as pricing goes... the 100 would be something i would get further on down the road

RMX gets some pretty good reviews. If your a little patient I bet you could get a VCI-100 for around $400, but you would still need a sound card.
