Having LED arcade buttons or LEDs above the arcade buttons
Posted on: 05.08.2010 by Jessika Kienast

I was browsing through a few threads on doing the arcade button modifications and then had this idea of not wasting the LED connections so why not connect them to LED buttons or have small holes drilled in the cover to accommodate LEDs.

Saw a few types on the Internet and whilst the majority of them will be too big or require a rather deep housing, some of them just MIGHT make an already funky piece of kit look even flashier.

Would you have the wiring diagram for the opposite end that connects to the controller, this would be helpful for those that have cut the led wires previously to do the arcade mod. If available, the two diagrams together would possibly aid in deciphering all of these wires. Thanks.

Glad to hear you got it to work. Were you able to utilize two different colored led's or just one color? I'm trying to figure out how to do this in order to utilize two led's as originally intended but with the arcade mod (this way I can take full advantage of the new firmware). My main concern is primarily sorting out the wiring. Will be looking forward to seeing your pics, also, could you help us out with the site were you got your buttons from? Thanks.

The Vci-100 arcade button with 2 color l.e.d. modification is complete. (took some time to get the buttons). Working on the step by step video tutorial next couple days and will be posted this weekend.
All I can say...Awesome (wait till you see disco mode with the arcade buttons flashing!)

Ha, I was wondering when someone was going to ask about the wire numbering. Since I work with electricians daily...they have a numbering tape system that are basically little numbered lables from 1 to 50 or even more... You can get this in the electrical section at home depot. I numbered all the wires before I cut them...using the photo at the top of this thread; that way I wouldn't lose track of the wires and where they went. Then got the harness and installed each wire into it following the numbered wires 1-11. The number 12 wire (ground) I didn't use. I believe it's for grounding the circuit boards together for electrical surges/safety but not required.

I will make a video of the steps required to make the certain parts including the wiring/harness/and connections soon. This should help 'walk' through the steps.

....including the numbered wires to the pcb board that were cut previously from the original arcade mod. Not to worry.,,

Was wondering if you had a pic of the opposite end of this harness, this way we can get a visual as to how it lays out in order to assist those that have previously cut the led wires so we can figure out the numbering of each wire. Thanks.

I've done a fair bit of modding on arcadesticks and such and the Seimitsu PS-14-D-N-K would be perfect for something like this.

Also PS-14-K-N for smaller buttons.
These are great buttons that easily would stand the test of time.

As I was looking for more info on this mod I came across the how to by bcondemi. This answers my previous posting. So here are the links to help everyone else out.

Thank-you very much for the wiring diagram. Perfect.
As for the buttons, I found one with a clear top. I'm in the process of mounting the led's in the button and will post some pics shortly.

Midi is right. . .unless you can find the OBSF-24 "skeletons", the LED wont' be efficient enough. . .

You may want to check out shoryuken.com community s. . .It's an arcade stick modding board, and there are some good ideas about LED's and mods for the buttons (Although the easier attainable one are semitsu) tt's not tailored to the midifighter, and it uses game boards.

It could (however) be a possibility for midi using HID-to-Midi translators.

That first photo of the vci-100 button circuit board....does anyone see the six wires (colored green) for the l.e.d.s. ( plus the blue ground )....aren't there actually eight l.e.d.s? ( two per button ).Shouldn't there be eight wires (colored green) for each l.e.d. Plus their ground?
Why only six wires?

To be really frank, I don't believe most of us will torture the buttons the way Ean does. I definitely won't since my purpose in getting the controller is to control decks 3 and 4 plus combo mixer / player for certain gigs where I need more than 2 decks. Other than that, if there're CDJs available, especially the 1000s, I'll use them.

This is def possible, however you are right in that the djtt buttons are too opaque to use. If you look on lizard lick you will find some by another manufacturer which are clear with a diffuser in the cap and are about the same size as the sawn buttons we sell. There is a thread floating round in which another community member used these for his vci mod with very good effect.
While we have always wanted to have back lit buttons for the midi fighter we didn't want to sacrifice the performance for wow factor hence our decision to stick with sanwa.

That does look cool and actually makes me consider doing the arcade mod. I'm just saying I don't believe you can put an LED inside a button you get from DJTT because of the way they're built. Which brings up another point. DJTT chose the buttons they sell because of how well built they are. I wonder if any of the LED buttons you linked to above are equally as well built?

And the faster you drum those buttons, the more of a free lightshow you'll be having.

Nope, just took a button apart. I don't believe there's enough room in there.

I like the idea. I believe you would have to use illuminated buttons because drilling a hole in the buttons wouldn't let enough light through. It might be possible to use some extra bright LED's to illuminate some of the lighter color buttons.
