Starting Set Up Beginner DJ
Posted on: 20.07.2011 by Dominque Strosser
I have some beginner skill with a laptop and VDJ7. I'm looking into getting my first Controller and gear. The budget I set to get my controller is $500.

Here is what I'm looking at

Hercules Dj 4set for $250
Midi Fighter no case no top $155
Total $ 405 and the (95 change to handle all shipping I'm using next day)

I'm looking to use this setup at small venues as well

Any other ideas for beginner setups for a $500 budget

Thanks

Makes no sense to buy a VCI. The price second hand is similar to the Twitch and it comes with no software or audio interface so the full setup would be significantly more expensive.

Buy a twitch and be done with it.

You could just instead of buying a midifighter and mixer, buy a used vci 100 standard and learn to mix on it and then if your ready upgrade to the twitch or s4.

This gives you lots of options, the build quality isn't dodgey and the resale value of the vci is still holding.

Twitch will be available within the next couple of weeks. Before you start a speaker thread, use the search button. There are many, many threads on different speaker suggestions.

In one sentence, if you want good quality (and good value) monitors, get KRK rokits (5s or 6s) or M-Audio BX-5a which are a little cheaper.

I agree with him.

Why don't you buy an used mixer for home usage and start by mixing 2 channels externally with an Audio 2 ?
You can even upgrade your mixer and mix externally with 4 channels with the same interface.
And to the traktor commands that you can't use externally you can buy a controller like a korg nanokontrol (wich can be used latter for sample decks)

I've gone to this route, started with an cheap audio interface (numark DJIO) and two korg nanokontrols + Maudio Oxygen 25keys. But I wish I had bought a mixer and only one korg nano instead of two nanos and a maudio...

Now my setup is this bellow, but I don't use the keyboard for mixing purpouses...

Those programs used to be good but they're so bland now. You've probably never heard of the software I use, they're pretty obscure.

Agreed. The VCI is great and I certainly won't be getting rid of mine, but as far as I'm concerned the Twitch is basically the next generation. Its features trump the VCI, with the exception of the DJTT support.

The VCI arcade is basically the last generation of the Twitch. Small, well built, fader fx, hittable button things, etcetc. It's also outdated, has less support and costs a fuck load more. What's the advantage supposed to be?

Thanks guys I'm going to wait for the twitch in the mean time i'm going to get the midi fighter or maybe even the pro and wait out the twitch which I read should be out in july sometime maybe august I hope soon.

Thanks guys and I see your point I would have to upgrade later and so it does not make sense to cheap out and waste money on cheap products only to end up buying the great ones later.

But what about the VCI 100 arcade

I played my first gig the other evening after nearly a year playing in the bedroom. Big learnings!
1. My laptop & Traktor crashed for the first time ever! (you need to supplement all the devices with more power, not just from a USB port. what ever controller you end up buying, it's a good idea to havea seperate power supply)
2. Thank god I had a good soundcard....NI Audio4 DJ was great.
3. My controller worked superbly, VCI 100, but will tell you that after a yar with it, I have now outgrown it, and want a controller with 4 seperate channels/faders....Contrary to what people tell you. If you're committed to to DJing it will pay to buy the best controller you can.
Hope this helps.

Now, if you're a beginner, I'd say, start out with "normal" mixing, and once again, for the beginner bedroom DJ, the Mixtrack Pro is good value for money. The Twitch seems like an awesome piece of hardware, but I'm not sure if a beginner can justify the price.
The twitch is significantly cheaper than the S4 for a comparable package (controller, built in sound card, software) and ITCH is a much simpler interface and easier to get your head around.

And lots of beginners have gone for the S4 because it's an all in one package.

The mixtrack is fine for what it is, but it's a beginner controller. At some point you'll most likely decide you want to upgrade.

Dude there's no reason you can't do normal mixing with the twitch at all.

I find it hard to justify spending money on something like the mixtrack when it's just going to be replaced shortly after.

i have to vote for the twitch if you can wait. pretty sure it will serve you a long time and is a bargain price for what you get.

if you really must have jog wheels then look elsewhere. if you like the format of the twitch i'd say thats your best bet atm.

I don't believe you should worry about build quality or support woes with Novation, they are very well respected.

Ok the twitch yes it new and that is what scares me especially the touch strip and those buttons don't look like they can take a betting and I don't know how get the tech support will be.

Oh yeah its not released yet and I want my gear with in the next two weeks and I doubt its going to be released by then.

Thanks guys for your help but I need something to practice on and develop a skill level before I upgrade bear that in mind.

Thanks I value your opinions and help

This. It's a good beginner controller but it has average build quality, an uninspired layout and no bundled software.

The twitch is new and shiny and awesome. As someone who has had my hands on it, I recommend it.

^ This. Your better off getting something that you can rely on rather than getting the hercules, and the midi fighter you'd still need a mixer.

Great suggestions what about the mixtrack pro I saw this package for 545 with amp and 10 gemini speakers. It looked tempting

I was kinda sold on the hercules dj4set seeing as it has a built in interface and I see the mixtrack pro has that as well and 4 deck mixing capablities has anyone had any experience with hercules products or the mixtrack pro

I don't want to rush out and get a interface just yet I like the A2Dj but I would want the A6Dj as I feel the A2Dj is a bit limited.

Whatever I do I will be getting the midi fighter classic or midi fighter pro I like the fact that they can be modded.

i would skip the MF as a beginner.
A2DJ (100), tp2 (200) and a cheap controller. Maybe something like that:

Thanks but can you tell which sound card because two midi fighters will run me about 300 bucks and a audio2 cost 100 bucks and the audio6 cost 250.

Traktor pro 2 will run me into another 250-300

I know traktor is one of the best dj software out there so I planned to get that next month along with a audio6

But you have me believeing the two midi fighter set up sounds boss
