There are good things to be said for internal mixing as long as your rig is simple. Traktor's internal mixer sounds good and has so much headroom that it doesn't really matter what you do as long as the master is set correctly, for one thing. And no matter how worn or dirty the controller gets, it'll still sound better than a similarly mistreated analog mixer. Plus, it'd be possible to use a really lightweight VST/AU host for post-mixer effects, which is more complicated when you're using a hardware mixer. And especially if you're comparing it do a digital mixer, it avoids some needless DAC and ADC stages, which in DJ gear tend to be mediocre.

BTW, don't learn to hear the difference between sound cards. The differences are very small, but they'll drive you insane when you start hearing them.

If it were me, I'd move the master and looper sections over to one side and add a few really basic controls for the master clock, MIDI clock send, internal recording, and "input" metering for internal recording over to one side (don't care which side, though). I'd also ditch the crossfader and offer a rotary option

because pretty much every other piece of dj gear that has a pitch control has it on the right hand side?

Mixer without cross fader and longer track volume controls for me, though if it ever happened I doubt that they would make one without a crossfader.

RE the soundcard, I'd be happy with XLR mains out and a headphone jack

would be interesting, especially for those like me who prefer the mixer on one side, the decks on the other.

my thoughts exactly. I would possibly be interested in a s4 like individual deck module.

ya i cant believe Ni has not made a modular system yet to tailor the set up to the individual needs and for people that cant afford an S4 to buy it in pieces. slowly i wouldnt mind purchasing just the S4 mixer (edit) with sound card

This is what I was gonna say. I believe a modular S4 type system would pretty successful. It'd knock the sc2000 right off the map.

I would buy it if they made a version that was just the side unit with the jog wheel, pitch, that could be chained through ethernet, had an additional row of cue point buttons, and had a browse/load encoder. Sound card with 4 outs in each unit that is easily aggregated naively in traktor might be nice too.

The last thing I want would be a midi mixer that had to use traktor's internal mixer though.

Wow, not really sure what to say. I guess for a permanent bedroom install it would be okay, but way to big to be practical.
