Posted on: 18.01.2012 by Regan Berzin
Dilemma for myself, to wait and buy the new Kontrol X? or to buy the X1?

since we have no info yet on the new Kontrol X? (price etc) I wonder will the X1 come down in price when the new controller comes out!

I'm looking for help with regards to setting up the X1, I'm aware its "plug and play". But here's the problem I'm having.

I have 2 CDJ 1000s, DJM 800 using Audio 8 with time coded CD's(TSP2). I go through the set up wizard in TSP2 and its fine, I can use the Kontrol X1 fine, but its when I use the CDJs the problems start, it won't allow me to use both the CDJs and Kontrol X1 at the same time. I either use the Kontrol X1 or CDJs when using TSP2(2.1.2).

I thought I could have the best of both worlds?! CDJs and X1? But when using the CDJ to play one track then try to put a loop in with the X1 the track stops and goes from absolute mode.

Another question, I can't cue a track up at the start with the X1, it won't allow me to hear the first beat of a track
What mapping are you using? Stock?

You can't use loops in absolute mode, you need to be in relative mode as i understand it

The scroll feature on the x1 is using "beatjump" in the mapping so you don't hear it scrolling.

But you should be able to hear it cued up. The stock mapping is funny though if you have scratch control selected then the cues don't work (you can over ride this in the mapping but it's fiddly) as it assumes you're using the cdjs to control the cues.

Use it in relative mode for starters and then try. also look at the hot cue bit of the mapping, that should work.

Or look out for other x1 mappings that may be more what you want

we don't have any real details on what 2.5 will and won't add yet - so this is mostly mental masturbation and for a lot of dj's some more advanced sample deck features in traktor may well be enough to stop needing to sync to ableton.

nothing "moronic" about not going the full hog and having a "full implementation with Ableton". no point in integrating ableton gui stuff in traktor anyway - as people would always complain about what was and wasn't included. and if you're using the full ableton gui then surely all your need is to be able to sync/route them together anyway?

i haven't used max4live but if seems to do a heck of a lot more than with just midi for live, which would help to integrate a personal setup of traktor+live

I'll bookmark this though and be sure to come back and discuss this again when Traktor ISN'T fully integrated with Ableton. Your obsession with it is blinding you. Traktor isn't a DAW and I'd hazard a guess that NI don't want it to become one. It's dj software. End of.

Of course NI would care dearly about allowing integration with software from other vendors (aka, NI would have to shell out $$$ to Ableton). For them to have that kind of integration, there must be some sort of licensing agreement between NI and a company like Ableton because NI would undoubtedly need Ableton to provide them with some sort of API to build such an integration. It actually makes more sense for NI to do what they are doing with Traktor 2.5 than for them to go knocking on Ableton's door. For the Traktor DJ, it's evident that when they do integrate Ableton into their set up, they are using Ableton in a very limited way. For such a limited use of Ableton, there's really no reason for one to even need Ableton apart from the few uses one has for it can't currently be done anywhere else but in Ableton. So, this leads us back full circle to Traktor 2.5, it's a smart move for NI to just include the few features that Traktor DJ's use Ableton for into Traktor itself (it's not like NI is building a full Ableton Live DAW competitor here).

So bottom line here? For NI the choice is to A) pay Ableton money and then spend resources on creating some sort of native Ableton integration in which they would probably not be getting $$$ back for because that is something that they would probably not be charging existing users OR B) create their own Ableton Live type functionality that they see Traktor users using Ableton for, not have to pay Ableton $$$, AND this is the biggie, they get to charge users a upgrade fee for. If I was NI, I would hands down go with option B.

New controller looks awesome sauce, april can't come soon enough. To be honest I'm more stoked about the Traktor 2.5 tandem release. Looks like they totally revamped the way samples work, for the better.

We shall see. It would be really stupid for NI to expect all of their users who already incorporate Ableton and Traktor - to have to rework all of their sounds and samples into a new traktor - without ability to simply link to Ableton.

The new NI controller looks to be dedicated to sample decks. The video shows two on the new controllers and an X1 to be used for transport duties. If you don't use the sample decks, I don't believe you would get much use out of the new controller.
