The jog wheels on my Numark Total Control took a dump on me, and I cant seem to find replacements short of buying a functional one online. Then it occurred to me that I don't really scratch so what do I need jog wheels for anyway? So, I started wondering what it would take to strip out the TC and convert it into a 4 channel midi mixer with my soundcards enclosed. (The soundcards are a Numark DJ I/O and an NI Audio 4. If possible, I would want to take advantage of the pass through for my TTs, but that would be more of a wish than a want since I still have my DJM)My believeing is that the TC has all the faders and pots I would need. Now I'm wondering if I've lost my mind since I've never done this kinda thing before. Is a bunch of reprogramming I would need to do in order to get it all working the way I want it to? I know some cats who are a professional C++ programmers, so getting that done wouldn't be a huge issue. I guess I'm really wondering if it's more trouble than it's worth. It's pretty apparent that the faders are not the greatest so those would need to be replaced and I would likely replace the knobs. Anyone have any thoughts? Is this worth the thought and effort or am I nutters for even going there? Thanks! | |

I believe your best bet is to find a cheap laptop off of eBay or something that can handle a program like Traktor/VDJ. Use that laptop for that purpose ONLY. That way u will still have plenty of portability. Do you do anything besides audio that would require that amount of space? I have a 1TB HD that has 50K songs + Videos and that doesn't take up even half the HD space. |

There's a post that I started when I was considering doing the mods, but job/life has a way of pulling me away. . .and there are other DJTT members that have already done pretty easy mods (removable USB cable, 3M Di-Noc skin). There's also a bunch of guys with TSI files for 4 deck controls. Like I mentioned, the possibilities are there. Even if you got older gear, check what you can do with what you got. Heck, there's a number pad PCB / Arcade button / tupperware mod that's actually getting good views because of it's very simple design. Can't find it though. | Vernie Beharry 11.05.2011 | Well. . .to tell you the truth, there are other controllers out there that surpass the TC or others that are a little bit more advanced that what it could be capable of and some at a better price point. Basic controllers - Hercules RMX - Numark Mixtrack (My choice) / Mixtrack Pro / iDJ3 - Amercian Audio VMS2 Advance/High End controllers - Numark NS6 (Pass Through for TT) - NI Kontrol S4 (same) - Reloop Jockey 3 - Denon MC6000 (My next tax-season purchase) - American Audio VMS 4 Tracktor The good thing is you're seeing what could be done for what you are going to use it for (no need for the jog wheels). You're also seeing the faults that the piece is giving you (faders/knob replacing). The pass through is a really nifty idea, but more and more high end controllers are going this route as well (NI S4, Denon MC600, Numark NS6). An just the fact that yer believeing for all in one means your believeing like a lot of the DJTT members here. Yer not crazy. . .the "mod" bug is just nipped at you. . .I'd say MOD for the sake of modding . . .but make sure you got a back up . . .the experience alone is worth it in the long run, and you never know what you can come up with. |
