Custom padKontrol software
Custom padKontrol software Posted on: 07.06.2010 by Christine Gettinger So, as a computing student i need a project for this summer and i have a Korg padKontrol which i am only partially satisfied with.I hope to be able to create a custom midi translator (similar to bomes) for the Korg padKontrol, pictured below. The crazy thing about the padKontrol is that you can only midi map the two knobs at the top right, the pads and the x-y scratchpad. All of the other buttons, including the rotary encoder control the padKontrols menu system and behavior. However, by sending obscure midi sysex messages you can set the controller to 'native' mode, which sends midi output from every control on the device. You can also send messages to turn the button LED's on/off and even write a message on the LED display. The downside is that the communication is all done in the sysex format. While 'normal' MIDI follows global standards, the format of sysex messages is completely up to the manufacturer and varies from device to device. I hope to create a bespoke piece of software specifically for the padKontrol that allows complete use of all controls. I also wish to implement usefull feedback from Traktor into the LED's. (Im believeing of having the buttons flash to the beat, that would be awesome ) This is going to be Mac only. Sorry windows users. If anyone has:
I would love to hear back from you. Dups. EDIT: Just found out about farmpad. How i did not bump into this during my research is beyond me. I might still have a shot at this just for fun. | |
Beckie Spitler 24.07.2012 | I'm having some issues running the software, I'm receiving a pop-up stating "Runtime error 429 Active X component cant create object" any idea whats going wrong? |
Maya Ribbe 03.07.2012 | Great, I will give it a try. It's good to see someone who got time to make this. Are you going to open source it ? I would be interested to see the source code and lib used. |
Christie Hamasaki 30.06.2012 | *bump* the software has been improved over time (xy-pad support, tap-mode, ...) and i believe it might be useful to some of you =) http://doktor-andy.de/wordpress/?p=338 |
Maya Ribbe 28.05.2011 | Hi, This is interesting, I'm currently (when I have spare time who's hard to find) doing the same kind of software but in C++ with QT lib and portmidi so it's theoretically running on OSX windows and linux. you can test an early version on github.org/totalKontrol but it has no friendly user interface and mappings are done with XML. It's really the beginning but I hope I willl have more time to refractor all this and make a nice UI and more features. btw the project is totally open source so you can help if you want |
Christie Hamasaki 23.05.2011 | nope. you will have to create another tsi file since the controllers differ to a huge amount |
Ginny Frigge 24.05.2011 | ohh sorry, last time i checked it i was brought to a screen of different mapping packs that were to be paid for, must have taken a wrong turn somewhere. is there any way this program can allow the pK to use the TSI files for traktor written for the midifighter? |
Christie Hamasaki 22.05.2011 | ? (don't get it...software is free...) anyways: a new version is out (2011-04-29): http://www.doktor-andy.de/joomla15/i...=99&Itemid=126 |
Ginny Frigge 22.05.2011 | bump this! anything ever come about this project? definitely dont want to spend 50$ on mappings using the doctor website haha |
Christie Hamasaki 06.05.2011 | seems to me there is an issue in your receiving software. (is it traktor?) you can check via midi-ox's window that a midi-ON and a midi-OFF signal is sent in correspondence to the pads being lit/unlit. please make sure you didn't set your oiftware to 'toggle' but to 'flash' (the toggle function is done via my software.) hard to explain on a friday evening at 0:20 but please just take a look at midi-ox's output and everything will probably become clear. |
Neal Lamp 06.05.2011 | Well i press a long time on the toggle and activate three pads (the ones that turn my effects on) And when i press them for the first time it works, the lights turns on so does the effect. I then press it again to turn the effect off but only the light goes out. I then press it again and the effect turns off but the light turns on! |
Christie Hamasaki 02.05.2011 | it doesn't make sense to not use the scene button since the device is in native mode. all its buttons are useless in regard to the original function. even if i would'nt use that button for any functionality you wouldn't be able to use it. the problem with the toggle mode sounds strange. didn't come across it yet. could you describe it a little more precise? |
Neal Lamp 01.05.2011 | I believe you should make the scene button remain the scene button because i'm getting quite limited with only 3 banks... Otherwise great work! I cant manage to get any feedback from traktor but i'm not that bothered. There is a slight problem in toggle mode... Press once: light comes on and pad sends midi message (it does what i've asked it to do) Press a second time: only light comes off and then it just gets all mixed up cos the light comes on when you've toggled it off.... Maybe its just me that doesnt know how to use it properly... |
Christie Hamasaki 29.04.2011 | a new version is out. it supports better feedback and is quite fun to use. videos and explanation as well as download can be found here: http://www.doktor-andy.de/joomla15/i...=99&Itemid=126 |
Neal Lamp 18.04.2011 | I've seen this program called pk squared its sort of hard to find on the web but it is supposed to do exactly what we want (mapping the buttons on the left and changing the lights....) I downloaded it but just dont know how the hell to configure it... Anyone know about this program? Btw you need max msp to run the program... |
Buster Kiper 19.01.2011 | It was a latency problem but its fixed now. So anyone having any success with the midi in and out? |
Buster Kiper 19.01.2011 | Sorry i should have stated this is with a korg padKontrol mapped to emulater the midifighters input and output notes |
Christie Hamasaki 18.01.2011 | more than once. (btw...wrong thread, maybe?) this is, as far as i know, caused by technical bs inside your computer. typically causes by 'something' within the power supply, a grounding issue etc. (sounds weired, right?). if you are using a laptop this problem is temporarily 'fixed' by running the laptop from battery only easiest thing is to put a ground loop isolator petween your computer's output and your mixer. this could decrease the signal's quality, but the amount is so small you won't recognize it in comparison to the annoying buzz-sound |
Buster Kiper 17.01.2011 | I'm using the Midifighter Decklized AB deck focused mapping and I'm getting a weird buzzing through my speakers every time I press the shift button and any other button. Anyone else having this problem? |
Christie Hamasaki 12.01.2011 | went faster than i thought new version supporting midi feedback is out. please let me know if it fits your needs: http://www.doktor-andy.de/joomla/ind...=97&Itemid=107 |
Christie Hamasaki 11.01.2011 | i already answered via mail (kind of) but there might be others being interested in this topic.... i guess you will have hard times creating sysex messages from traktor. you might achieve some results with bome's midi translator etc... but... in order to make things easy i am currently working on a new version which supports configurable midi feedback for the pads (incoming midi notes/ CCs light up the pads...) i will post the new version here and on my website within the next days. feel free to contact me if there are any questions/ suggestions left. |

But, when? i mean, how do i assign this blink to a traktor midiout? how do you link a sysex midiout to a midiin? thanks in advance! greetings! |

On the midi-fighter this is indicated by a the sample/record button lighting up. I wonder if we could use the Traktor's beat synced LED midi out(as this is a continuously transmitted message, a pseudo work out to the problem of the LEDs only briefly lighting up when they receive a signal) and a modifier of sorts to make the sample/record button light up in sync with the beat when there's a sample loaded. |
Melia Klemenz 25.12.2010 | I purchased the padKontrol with TP 2 years ago with the same ideas...very disappointed when I realised I couldn't map and utilise all of the controls or map lights etc... It's taken a lot of searching to find this...i've explored all of the other options...Max patches...nativekontrol...Bomes Midi translation...each is a in their own right...but still not quite what i wanted. This still has a few problems...it only looks for messages on one channel,,,and some buttons transmit on different ones..maybe the author could be persuaded to write some new code if there is enough nterest... |
Buster Kiper 25.12.2010 | That's a pretty awesome link. I have a PadKontrol coming in the mail and I plan on using the midi-fighter tsi. I was rather bummed to find that the korg's lights can't be toggled on and off via midi command messages. Seems like this maybe be a viable work around. |
Melia Klemenz 25.12.2010 | Hi all, After much Googling I came across this.... http://www.doktor-andy.de/joomla/ind...=97&Itemid=107 Tested working on XP with no problems so far using Loopbe virtual midi... |
Ardis Crebs 02.12.2010 | Anybody on here ever attempt to swap out the smd led's on this badboy? I opened mine up, ordered the parts, desoldered one of the lights, and I actually got one of the pads to trigger with a blue led instead of red, but I did a shite soldering job and it stopped working. Also managed to mess up the entire bottom row of lights by continuing to try to get them to work. Two issues I ran into were, I believe I bought too large size of the smd led's (had no idea what kind the padkontrol used so I just guessed by googling up smd led images and trying to measure) and also, if you head up the smd led's too much the little cheapo "pads" that are under each connection just come right off the board. I would actually pay someone for this mod as aesthetics mean a lot to me and my studio, lol Just wondering if anyone ever attempted this mod? I know it's purely cosmetic but you can't deny it would look damn good! Any input would be helpful. Also let me know if I should have started a new thread as I am new to this community |
Johnie Lytton 10.06.2010 | Btw, something kind of along the lines of the padKONTROL Editor Librarian software that comes bundled with the padKONTROL hardware would probably be best for your farmpad gui for mac |
Johnie Lytton 10.06.2010 | A Windows farmpad would be excellent, however, the GUI for the mac version stands to be most excellent. Would a JAVA version be possible? Something like a multi-platformer like Rapid Evolution? It tends to get a little cumbersome and boring for people who do not 'believe' the way most programmers believe when using farmpad, so it is much easier for them to click a mouse rather than remember a specific syntax and writing that code into a text file for what they want to control. |
Hang Postman 07.06.2010 | i would love a windows farmpad (i dont have a mac) |
Susann Blachford 07.06.2010 | Yea it seems like a Windows program is what people need. It seems farmpad has already satisfied most mac users. you could maybe make a GUI for farmpad, since its text based editing may put most people off.. |
Hang Postman 07.06.2010 | Have you tried farmpad? |
