i'd heard that before - which seemed odd but according to good old wikipedia spanish is spoken by 12% of the usa and american-english is only the native tongue for 82% compared to 95% of people in the uk only speaking english, so kind of makes sense... you'd still believe that english would be the official language though? not that that matters at all i guess...

I'm from deep in the welsh valleys. My accent is different from people that live just 20 miles away.

Here is an example filmed in my local.

My g/f is a Manc... born at Hope Hospital...

Manchester is a great city... full of c*nts though hahaha
It used to be a part of the county of Lancashire (of which my city is the administration city) but its no longer a part of Lancashire, it is its own county, Greater Manchester.
So fuck em...

Lancashire is the greatest county in England.

I just reread the article shown in the original post about rhotic rolling of the R. Given that the original English settlers in 1620 were from Plymouth, I'd say the Devon accent plays a much greater part than anything else. And rhotic accents aren't limited to the south of England either (where it is the dominant style). Karlos will attest to pockets of the north where it's overwhelmingly strong - Blackburn/Preston in particular.

So it is indeed highly likely that original US accent is based in part on the Devon/Cornish accent, but with different influences, has evolved generically and locally - as have the multitude of English accents.

Did you know that the US doesn't have an official language? And only 28 states have ratified English as their official language? Strange but true.

I cringed watching the videos in this thread, and the general tone of the original piece. I find [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_English"]American English - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia@@AMEPARAM@@/wiki/File:English_USC2000_PHS.svg" class="image"><img alt="" src="http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/c/cb/English_USC2000_PHS.svg/220px-English_USC2000_PHS.svg.png"@@AMEPARAM@@commons/thumb/c/cb/English_USC2000_PHS.svg/220px-English_USC2000_PHS.svg.png[/ame] to be somewhat more palatable.

Language is evolving all the time. You only have to look at the list of words accepted into the Oxford English Dictionary each year, especially the likes of LOL... (shudders).... Even that has lost its meaning in a few years. LOL used to mean "laugh out loud" - a positive coffee snorting guffaw in the virtual world. To tha kidz though, "slightly amusing" is much closer, especially when dropped into my daughter's conversations.
