Ever Felt Like Quitting?

Ever Felt Like Quitting?

I feel stuck. I love music and the art of music production don't get me wrong. Anymore though, I feel like whats the point of it? I see guys like Avicii and Porter a year older than me (Porter is actually younger) tearing up the world with their mixes and songs, and I just wonder whats the point because of guys like that. I realize it may seem like I am doing it for the wrong reasons, but i truly love seeing what my potential is. I guess I am just looking for support. I am in college studying finance, and I am constantly told to stop wasting my time, as it will never become a career and i will never do anything but weddings. I understand the point of what they are saying, but playing music is what I enjoy doing. I am just wondering if anyone else has been in the same boat and how you got through it. As I sit here just staring at my screen, I feel like I am at a crossroads. I have invested thousands into gear not to mention hours upon hours of my time to just stop. But then again I feel like these people are right at times, and that I should just play videogames like typical teenager. I feel like I could have talent, but I am not sure how to properly display it. I have no musical background and understand why people would say to stop. I do not know how to play the piano, and everything that I do know about music theory I have taught myself and learning from youtube has helped. Never did I expect to just plug in my Axiom and believe i would sound like Avicii, but damn am I confused. Advice would be appreciated if you have had this experience. Thanks

This!

i have 3 regular weekly evening s that i play and get paid for, not a great amount, but a little extra in my pocked (granted for about 10 minutes till i buy more music), however the money isnt what matters to me, i do a monthly under 18's event and charity events for free. Id love to make it big but to be really honest i enjoy making people enjoy their evening and as a bi product i enjoy it too, if my chance comes along christ ill jump at it but until then just enjoy doing what makes you happy.

I believe the trick to it is not to compare yourself with anyone. Why? Because you aren't the same at all and never will be. You can look to other bigger DJ's and maybe try to learn from them. Learn their strengths and see if you can incorporate even a part of them in your own ways, as theirs have led to success. But stop comparing and realize you must go your own way. Stay dedicated, stay focused and definitely have the perserverance to stick with what you truely love to do. Also don't listen to anyone, who you don't feel has the right to give you any advice. Me included! If you are going to take advice or critique, then it should be from someone who has definitely had success in what you want success in too. Everyone else is not eligible, even parents.

Word!

This is basically what every successful DJ will tell you, people like Porter are the exception, most of them get where they are by hard work and finally catching a lucky break.

If you DJ or produce for the sole purpose of trying to be wildly successful you are wasting your time, you absolutely have to be doing it because you love it first and for most.

Every day I ask what the point is.

You need production and Djing as a way to express yourself artistically. It will help with your overall stress levels and vitality making you a more successful whole person.

Nothing wrong with not touching in for a while. One day the fire will explode and you can start were you left off.

Everything is always changing so I like to try and avoid absolute decisions.

Whenever i get pissed, I crack my neck, stretch and go grab a water and search for about 3 new fresh songs, buy/download them. play on facebook and sike myself back up and mix it like a champ.

kinda like your not supposed to end a call with ya girlfriend with her upset with you, same with my S4, never get mad at her and she does you good. haha

I feel the same sometimes. I believe why keep going trying to make a name for myself? Why can't i just do it as a hobby in my room.. But i enjoy DJ'n. I will never stop bedroom DJ'n and as far as i can see i will never stop DJ'n in clubs (well near future).

I see people i know younger than me getting non stop gigs in the local city that i know i am better than and it makes me lose faith but i ain't gonna stop.. why?

Because its what i enjoy doing.

I couldn't stop if i tried. I just still got the bug to make mixes and play out and i've been doing it for 20 years (since i was 14).

I've probably peaked in terms of my "career" and am down the other side of that peak... I've played massive gigs alongside many of my idols as DJs and it's amazing.

But truthfully there must be downsides to doing it full time... it's not going to be all amazing venues and hot women. guaranteed there's a lot of travelling for some lame gigs too and soon your friends will stop coming with you and it will all seem a bit lonely.

I'm 34 and started playing at 14. I've played some amazing venues and I've had ups and downs. I once took 2 years off because I wasn't feeling it. The way I figure is once its not fun is when I stop. I've worked day jobs to live and have played on weekends for fun and side cash. Do it because you love it and you'll get so much out of it. The way I see it is DJing is my therapy, rocking a crowd of 1000 people who are really into your sound will make you forget all those fools who told you to quit. What's cool is that if you work finance by day and DJ a few gigs here and there you'll feel empowered. You wont need to play to eat, you'll play for the love.

thats good to hear at the end of the day people will always try to put you down but they cant even begin to comprehend how much work goes into making a set happen and even more generally how much of your life you have to devote to this to even get started. its marmite, you either love it or hate it! good luck with everything and im sure youre day will come.

I just want to say thanks guys. After i really read and thought about it all day, I realized you guys are correct. I guess i just lost sight of why I did it. I did not understand why I was putting in the time for no reward, but I was doing it because i loved it. In the end that is all that matters. I DJ because I love to hear what people say about it good or bad. It is fun, and I dont give a sh1t what the people telling me to stop have to say. Thanks guys. I really appreciate your stories/relatingness/etc. I do not feel so alone now.

We are at a point in history where the musicians (and DJs) have to get back to the original position of either finding a sponsor (like a king or someone with lots of money) or then just do what JS Bach et rest did, have a daytime job, maybe related to music and do whatever you want at your spare time. There will be exceptions but few in future.

I'm not sure what way you'll take this but here's my opinion,

I'm 17, Starting music production in college next month. If i end up a huge name in the clubs and can live the huge dj lifestyle that's great so be it, But if i can't and i'm only bits here and there, i'm still gunna keep music as my profession when i'm older simply because i love doing it. Whether i make milllions or pocket dust. I'll be happy, Because i know i'll be doing what i love doing, And not trying to please anyone else.

If becoming big and famous was easy then everyone would do it. When I feel like this I put my gear down and step away for a little bit. I know I love music and would be lost without it. Sometimes I get frustrated and believe I suck and won't go anywhere with it, but then I believe... what does it matter? I'm having a riot doing what I do at any capacity.

If people tell you you should stop wasting your time, don't bother paying attention to them. I mean, when people say things like that it makes me feel like they are saying, "Don't do anything because in the end you die." It's just a bummer of a thought. So instead of letting people get you down, keep mixing, keep producing, and keep having fun. If you do it for the love of music then what else could possibly matter?
