Easy ways to remove a DJTT custom overlay?
Easy ways to remove a DJTT custom overlay? Posted on: 16.02.2010 by Chan Ronga Hey guys,Now that the latest TSI mapping for Traktor has been released (and I must say before I start, what a crackin' good job you did with it!) I'm purchasing a new overlay. This will be the 4th overlay I've purchased from DJTT (gotta support the troops), after getting one of the old 1.x versions, a 2.x version, and then a 2.x arcade version. While I'm totally used to the whole ripping/tearing/scraping off of old overlays, I'm wondering if anyone has any tips for an easier way to remove an exisiting overlay? I'm a bit of a neat-freak when it comes to my controller and don't want to just stick one overlay over the next. In the past I've just ripped it off with brute strength and determination. Scraping the last bits of it with a craft-knife and spirits to dissolve the glue (that's right... im that crazy). My plan at the moment, once I receive the new overlay, is to unscrew everything and dump the faceplate in the dishwasher with the hottest water i can get my hands on. Hoping that it at least allows me to peel it off with less tearing than usual. Perhaps some other guys are as particular as me and know a better way to get the overlay off? Cheers, Nannou | |

Lanny Vanosten 28.02.2010 | soon as I get the new overlay, I will post some pics of the whole process including the plates. BC |

We sometimes use a hot air gun to soften up the adhesive which makes it easier but that also means that more adhesive will get left behind. The brute force method, while requiring He-man strength, is the cleanest option as it leaves very little residue behind. Sorry guys, we had to use a fairly strong adhesive so the rounded corners stay down and the overlays dont fall off eventually. |
Elwanda Ganzalez 21.02.2010 | You guys should try a lil bit of heat from a hair dryer or better yet a heat gun. Should peel right off with no mess. |
Lanny Vanosten 21.02.2010 | I cut-out the old overlay to fit exactly on the original plates that came with the VCI. Now that the new layout is arriving shortly, with another set of plates I ordeerd, I will again cut it out to fit on the new plates. Just need to unscrew the old plates (with the old overlay) and screw down the new plates (with the new overlay). Can actually go back and forth to whichever layout I want by changing plates. BC Btw, you can cut the overlay in 3 or 4 inch wide strips along its entire face (with a new sharp exacto knife blade) so that you can rip of the pieces one strip at a time. You can then use plumbers hand cleaner (hardware store) that is a de-greaser and contains grit within it. Rub it on the plate with fine steel wool and it strips it perfectly clean. Makes the plate shiny like anew piece of aluminum. |
Giselle Kawalec 21.02.2010 | whats up.. i ahvent done it yet but i am believeing of jsut ripping it off with me big muscles hahaa then use vinegar or wd40 to soak then rub it off then a nice wipe down with detergent then let dry hope it helps.. peace |
Mack Rehberger 18.02.2010 | You can but i guess it's not as neat as if you would remove the original first. Also what material is the top case of the VCI? |
Julissa Serrone 18.02.2010 | can we not just slap on the new 3_3 overlay on top of the last one????? |
Chan Ronga 18.02.2010 | Yeah I feel as though brute strength might be the only way to handle it.... although i reckon chucking it in the dishwasher can't hurt... at least it'll be afterwards! |
Laquita Coduto 16.02.2010 | Last one came off with brute strength, determination and will. Planning on going the same route once the new one arrives! |
Doug Bieling 16.02.2010 | I would also like to know this to so if any brigfht sparks out there have any ideas sock em to me Maybe i will take it in the bath with me and give it a good soak |
Mack Rehberger 16.02.2010 | Perhaps u can use a paint stripper. It looks like a drill and it blows really hot air, they use it to melt paint off from things. But i don't know for sure if this can work because maybe u will bend the metal because of the heat... |
