DJTT Mix competition - Whos got the balls?
Posted on: 10.08.2012 by Lawana Spratlen
Who wants to go in a head to head mix off?

We can do a knockout competition and run a vote.

Kinda like a mix train but a bit different.

The rules (Any input welcome):

30 - 45 min
Any Genre
Any format ie vinyl, traktor, ableton, serato or whatever!

Whos in? Put your names down and I will randomly sort out who plays against who

So lets agree on some rules so we can get this going in the right direction, before it drags on and nothing ever becomes of it. First off, someone correct me if I'm wrong, but my take on this competition is that it's just a friendly DJTT competition, set-up by DJTT members, and is basically just a great way to get your mixing heard and get feedback on them and as well as be able to listen to how others mix. SO with that being said I'm believeing we should just set-up some very basic rules, as this is only supposed to be a friendly competition with nothing really on the line.

I'm believeing this (and anyone that believes differently, obviously feel free to speak up)

-20 minute minimum mix
-Around 30 min maximum mix (if your mix is 33 mins or something, again no biggie)
-Any Genre
-Lets limit the post production on mixes (no tracking in scratches and samples after, rule of thumb; if you didnt do it live on the first take then it doesnt belong, EQ tweaking, volume maximizing, and basically any other stuff just to polish your mix I'm believeing is OK)

What do you guys believe? Once we can agree on rules, we can get a head count, agree on voting, agree on submission date, and figure out how we are gonna upload em.

just an idea, i was on a site a few years back where it was live streaming, with numerous people in the room listening. so how about have the genre picked, time is set, and mix live. put your name on a list of the genre you want to compete in. randomly pick the dj to battle from the genre... setup date and time event will start and time people need to be logged by in order to vote, and votes will be given at the end of the battle. i dont know just an idea... maybe even do it through mixify

Both Hardcore Techno and DnB. If I use one in a mix then I often use the other. Example where I go from Hardcore to DnB:

Mix into DnB starts around 4 minutes and actually mixes out of the break

Techno or DnB???

I might be interested in this. Not sure if the genre I want to mix would be very popular among this crowd though (It would be primarily Hardcore Techno laced with some DnB). You guys know when this thing is going down and what the conditions are?

Come on now chaps, just because you were comprehensively pwned in the other thread that's no reason to keep bearing grudges.

It's ok to just accept that there are people who know more than you without having to spill butthurt onto every thread on the community . Just try to learn from the more experienced community members so you don't embarrass yourselves in the same way twice.

Entrants should use a DJ name that reflects their style of music.

eg. DJ Fromage Frais

So is this a pissing contest?

Why not just get on with it and play out...make the $$ and shag the ladies.

Not sure why every new DJ wants to battle....like they scratch artists.

I mean, I know you get better props from the DJ's and Producers and it means more coming from them if you do well....but trying to out do them in a competition....I dunno....it just seems kinda high school'ish to me.

Not dissing anyone, enjoy the comp and go APE!

Me...I don't have the time. I work...collect music and prep em...play out.

I have no need to validate my badassness. I used to when I was younger....maybe its that.

How about these for the rules:

1. Mix must be anonymous
2. Maximum of 1 hour
3. Must be listed as one of the following Genres: House, Tech-House, Techno, Drum & Bass, Dubstep, Trance, Bass, Mixed
4. Each Genre can then be given a separate area of the community and people can then vote for their favorite mix.
5. DJTT Mods then choose the overall winner from the winners of each genre.
6. Any format - Traktor, Serato, Ableton, Vinyl ect

We need to finalise the rules then see who's entering.

Each DJ must have total control of the music choice.

Hmmm... a stipulated set of tracks doesn't sound feasible to me. It would mean you either must already have the music, you must buy the music or DJTT must give us the tracks. Sounds difficult indeed to me.

i am 100 percent down to participate!!! And as said i consistenly mix genres n bmps!! moderators pick 20 to 30 songs different variations of genres (6 songs of each genre 5 different genres) (genres can be mixed) minimum of 5 songs more if you want!!
Judging: Transitions, technique, fx use and over all set song choice is not to be judged!!
Anonymous is a must!!

I like the anonymous idea. However I often mix up BPM and Genre! Should be judged on the whole thing, track selection and mixing.

I don't see a point in a dubstep set going up against a techno set when one may win over the other purely based on how many more people like a genre. This should be about the mixing not about which genre is more pouplar. We can also have an open class where you can play whatever you want.
I agree with this, and it's the only thing that still confuses me about a competition like this. What exactly is being judged here? Quality of mixing or the entire set. Because for me, you may have the best transitions in the world and throw down an amazing set technically, but I don't like the songs, then I'll generally dislike the overall set. That's why I believe the competition should be genre based.

I like the anonymous part too. How about the DJTT team pick out say the top 5 (should more than 5 mixes be entered), because even with 5 mixes and a max 30 minute mix length, that is 2.5 hours of music to have to possibly listen to, in order for someone to find their "favorite". Since it would be a DJTT contest, then they should pick out their favorites and leave the last voting up to the users. The mixes would be uploaded to Soundcloud in a neutral account (maybe even the DJTT account?), so no one knows who the mix belongs to, then the voting could begin.

We're DJ's we buy more music than most other people, I don't see that as a problem. I would discourage any talk of sharing songs on the community though. I like the idea of them all being the same set of songs. We could have say a list of say 15 songs and you have to choose a minimum of five. Most would play more, but some wouldn't.

I'd believe that in order to have voters give a unbiased vote/judging of mixing (and not based on music taste or actual song preference) you'd would have to have some type of controlled reference. In this case, the only variable we have before voting, is the track selection.

Depending on how many contestants there are in a round, you could possibly have each person pick a set. Something along the lines of:
-2 people a round, 4 songs a piece
-4 people a round, 2 songs a piece

But this would mean contestants would have to buy songs they didn't already have or use other resources like soundcloud to legitimately fill their part of the playlist. Just my .02
