Rochel Papillion 30.05.2013 | Ive seen him live and although his music is big room, it still has authenticity n soul, I'm guessing starting out as underground served him. But from talking to him on twitter, the reason he left the underground scene is because he felt the music was kind of like a hobby, and it wasnt evolving anymore. He played hip hop when I saw him, which was crazy I mean, its kind of the similar story with Kaskade. Although he makes big room, I can hear the influence his older house times have on them. Is there a lil hypocrisy on what they say? yes but if you in their position, its bound to. this apparently what he makes for fun https://vine.co/v/bEeeaHKXYA0 that quote on the OP is from one of those interviews if you are interested http://thump.vice.com/words/the-arri...lfgang-gartner http://whiteraverrafting.com/camp-bi...ew/2013/04/29/ |
Alena Horten 30.05.2013 | Apart from his last album, Wolfgang makes real good glitchy, fidgety, electro-house, and if any of you have ever watched him live, you guys would know he puts on a great show without playing the beatport top 10. |
Augustina Zulu 30.05.2013 | Not sure how I feel about this. If he was serious about bringing authenticity and soul back to dance music maybe he should relisten to the Jackin Tracks/Blue Label stuff he made under Joey Youngman. Most older heads that I know feel like he kinda jumped the shark once he picked up the Wolfgang Gartner persona and started making big room/festival stuff. His older stuff is alot closer to the Daft Punk sound he's hopin will "unbrainwash" the massses. Just feel like he kinda contributed to the sound he's baggin on in some ways. |

He really isn't that great a Dj these days, especially when you compare him to guys like farina and Derrick carter who's coat tails he's currently riding. |

No-one was there because it was the current "big thing". This is what happens when a minority scene becomes mainstream. |

In the early 90's you had 2 unlimited (aka 2 untalented) doing cheesy poppy techno style tracks in the charts Around 1994 you had all that horrible cheesy trance/progressive come in, which was promoted by the likes of Judge Jules. Horrible, horrible cheesy formula breakdowns and huge silly build ups after the drops, which continues to this day!! The crowds became younger and they loved it. Many of the great Dj's sold out and played commercial cheese/trance/euro rubbish. What's new?? It's always happened. Ignore the shit and take what you like. |

What I have learned is that everyone has their own opinion on music and every individual has his or her own taste. It happens with every major form of music. Hip Hop went from underground greats like Gangstarr and Pete Rock and CL Smooth to these days of Will.I.Am rapping (crapping?) over any electro song available. That said, the same guy Will.I.Am and Guetta have transformed the house movement into something candy and commercial. It's just the way the evolution of music goes. I remember Axwell when he used to put out good songs (Feel The Vibe or Mos - 2 Million Ways), now he just does Jesus Pose and bangs out mega synths. The reality is that all of these guys were broke at one time and now they are trying to consume the market. Can't knock a guy for trying to live. I guess my point is that if you feel something is no longer "good" for your musical taste, try another style. Find that sweet spot you are looking for. Stop bitching, roll up you sleeves and get down to business! For the record, although Guetta has "sold out", I believe he is an amazing DJ. I have heard that guy rock a real house set that was one for the books. |
Neville Blackinton 03.05.2013 | I have noticed this phenomenon with EDM with the whole digital revolution. When it used to cost a lot of money to produce music/press it to vinyl, music producers did their best to make the music enjoyable, danceable and but also unique. A DJ/buyer had to feel they were getting their money's worth when a song would cost $10-20 per. And you weren't going to spend that money on mediocre tracks. Now with software and mp3s anyone can make music. And it's cheap and accessible. However most of it sounds dry, boring, and the same IMO. It is a cycle, peaks & valleys, whatever you call it. I just hope this phase hurries up and the next phase brings about some quality tunes. |

And not just with "subgenres" either, but with whole main genres. Artists which were formerly of the R&B, Hip Hop or even regular pop persuasion seem to have taken it upon themselves to convert to dance music since it became popular, as well as this every rap song now seems to have a pop chorus, every pop song has a rap verse, and many songs have this weird little "half-time" bit which I assume is supposed to vaguely emulate a dubstep feel. Badly. This is what I feel Wolfgang is mainly trying to get at. The problem is that mish-mashing genres like this often puts a song in "no-mans land" in terms of appeal or content, so rather than having something that does one thing well and appeals to a certain group of people, you end up doing a lot of things very weakly, and appealing to no-one, least those who like simpler boundaries between songs or are a fan of the individual genres. At least that's the theory in an ideal world, but as Wolfgang appears to say, people are eating it up. Why? Goodness knows. |
Romelia Stankard 02.05.2013 | So he's upset about the the direction the commercial side has been going when he has devoted the past five years to pushing that sound forward with his wolfgang gartner alias? I didn't even realize before the other day he has also produced decent house music as Joey Youngman and they are the same person... So it just makes him a hypocrite who enjoys big main stage american festival and club paychecks and getting beatport top 10 hits on major labels more than he cares about the "decline of dance music" that he is moaning about now. if you want to produce that kind of music for the big money then fine, but don't then go out and moan about the "decline of edm" and beg for people to "save it" if that's what you're going to do. He makes it sound like this is new and only happened all of the sudden in 2013 but it has been going that way for several years leading up to it and he is as much to blame as anyone else and has been a part of it. It's not just him.... watching some of these producers go back and forth on twitter is hilarious (shm, avicii, hardwell, knife party, zedd, deadmau5, etc have all had spats like this) and boils down to "my noisy commercial big room music isn't an issue and is tastefully done but your mildly different commercial big room music is cheesy and is ruining EDM." If he wants to save dance music so badly maybe he should stop producing so many commercial electro club bangers with big drops like he is whining about. Dance music doesn't really need saving, all you have to do is ignore DJs and producers like him and listen to all the better music out there. |
Efrain Scharr 02.05.2013 | This dude contributes to the same cheese he is complaining about. Total hypocrite! |
