Raleigh North Carolina: Dubstep the prominent genre?
Raleigh North Carolina: Dubstep the prominent genre? Posted on: 15.11.2009 by Al Henger alright, so I'm a bedroom dj... and I would really like to go out and get a gig, but I'm finding that the biggest genre in my area (raleigh), seems to be Dubstep, one i'm not too familiar with. Anybody else in the area see this to be true? I've been out to quite a few bars/clubs where the Dubstep stage will have the dance floor packed, while the electro floor is looking a little bit sparse.I dunno, it just seems a little bit wierd to me. I mean, Dubstep got me moving to evening for sure, but I was really wishing more people were over on the Electro stage, cause I sure would love to dance over there. | |
Masako Barcalow 12.06.2012 | Let me know when your next one is, I'd be interested in coming to check it out. PM me with the details and I'll do my best to make it out there |
Al Henger 12.06.2012 | Katmandu is essientially that. a dive bar. Without the presence of my gear (3 BFM t48 subs, 3 tops) there would be no sound system in there at all. That being said, the only events that happen there are the ones I help run, as the gear isnt left in an operational fashion when I'm not there. |
Masako Barcalow 12.06.2012 | I didn't know katmandu was very EDM friendly. I always thought they tailored to the standard Top-40 divebar crowd. Know anyone I could get an in with? Business has been slow lately |
Al Henger 12.06.2012 | wherever really. I've opened up for acts such as smash gordon, Crystal method in large venues like the longbranch. I was booked to open for the cancelled downlink show at lincoln theater. I've played southland ballroom, solas, flex, katmandu, sadlacks heros mosaic (not for a year though), The Hive, 5 star, and a couple other venues around town. As of right now I operate a saturday weekly alongside my roommates at katmandu |
Masako Barcalow 12.06.2012 | Sine where do you play? I'm trying to branch out a bit. I pretty much have a semi-residency at Mosaic but that's about it as far as the club scene goes for me. I play electro house and trance mainly, and looking to add a few more notches in my DJing belt |
Al Henger 12.06.2012 | if you're off toevening go check out covert bass at spy. 21+ free, 18 up only 5. |
Jolynn Schroyer 11.06.2012 | lol okay. just saying i wouldn't be comfortable about posting my phone number on here. |
Meaghan Telesz 11.06.2012 | Bro no ones is gonna bother me on a community |
Jolynn Schroyer 11.06.2012 | You should be careful about posting your number on the internet. Just saying. |
Meaghan Telesz 11.06.2012 | If anyone can connect me with a DJ or if your happy to connect my number is 919-949-1112 would be much appreciated |
Meaghan Telesz 09.06.2012 | Hey ya I saw your girl play shes really good heres my number just hit me up when your playin and maybe afterwards we can talk 919-949-1112 |
Al Henger 09.06.2012 | sorry I missed you man. I had to head home early. If you were there by 11 my girl and I were playing that slot. my boys gauntlet and aggression from 12-1. my roommates G-virus (Yuthnasia, sporattix, Leader1) from 1-2, and a mix contest winner (Doubleclick out of wilmington nc) from 2-3. We're also doing our weekly saturday event toevening
at the same place (Imperial crew take over). If you're not busy tmrw evening , Hulk is playing at the Longbranch (10 dollars at the door). They (iGroov) gave away 500 free tickets but you're a tad late to jump on that. |

Meaghan Telesz 08.06.2012 | Hey im at Katmandu im wearing a DJ carbon shirt the music here is sick I wanna speak to you if possible cuz I need to meet some DJs anyway can ya help me out? |
Meaghan Telesz 08.06.2012 | so are you djing toevening or tomorrow and the address is 3003 hillsborough street in raleigh correct? It would be nice to meet some dj's within 30 minutes of my house I actually live right next to southpoint mall so I'm not too far from where you are |
Al Henger 08.06.2012 | Katmandu is free. Its a saturday weekly (yes we're doing it again tmrw). This is a one off, but promises to be good. I dont attend southland events anymore. They modeled/bastardized their dubstep wed event off of dub sessions after we left. |
Meaghan Telesz 08.06.2012 | alright sounds good I'm probly gonna go back to sleep lol cuz I work from 4-10 pm and then I fuckin go hard lol not really but I used to in colorado when I knew ppl who could get me alcohol but any way I'm going to southland ballroom next wednesday for dubstep lol also how much is admission for katmandu? |
Al Henger 08.06.2012 | I hear ya dude. Btw, let me say welcome to Raleigh. Wasnt trying to come off as a dick, just woke up. late 6am evening
. Katmandu is right off hillsborough st (right next to NCSU). We're going to 3am toevening (if not later). |
Meaghan Telesz 08.06.2012 | Ya I understand but I just moved down here so I dont know anyone also I'm a music producer my channel for youtube is youtube.com/DJC4rb0n and I guess I can come to Katmandu depending on where it is cuz I get off work at 10 PM and i work down in morrisville/cary |
Al Henger 08.06.2012 | dude, I'm 20. I organized, single handely promoted, and ran the dubstep weekly Dub Sessions (the first dubstep weekly to see more than 30 people, and more than 300 people on a weekly basis) in Raleigh for 2 years, starting at amores pizza (lol, but I was 18 at the time), moving to southland ballroom after 5 months, to flex for a couple months, and finally to solas (most opulent club in raleigh). All this time I havnt been able to legally drink in a bar, and I dont. Come out to Katmandu toevening (its a shithole), but we're hoping to have around 300 people there toevening , that shit is free. my roommates decided to do a "Dressed to get screwed" party as a joke.... apparently people liked it based on responses. |
Meaghan Telesz 08.06.2012 | ey im 19 jus sayin cant organize shit when your my age lol |
Al Henger 08.06.2012 | still subscribed after 2 years.... lol. Carbon, start organizing house parties. sell beer. buy gear . |

Masako Barcalow 07.06.2012 | Just shot you an email with what you need to do on your end if you wanna get booked there. |
Meaghan Telesz 07.06.2012 | Yo sunshine if you can hook me up please do man cuz I'm lookin for a chance just give me a chance and I promise you I will blow your mind even though I havn't really messed with a lot of DJ gear in my days I know how to make music |

Romelia Stankard 07.06.2012 | 3 year old thread revival? Newbies always be grave digging. |
Masako Barcalow 07.06.2012 | So many Raleigh people on this thread! You have no idea how happy this makes me Like seriously, this just completely kicked my hangover. I play electro house and trance at Mosaic Wine Lounge. Steven Feinberg is the owner, and a REALLY cool guy. Very down to earth and open-minded. If you're looking for your first club gig and don't want to play dub all evening , this would be a great place, as they have evening s for just about every type of music imaginable. |
Meaghan Telesz 07.06.2012 | I'm lookin for a dubstep DJ around Raleigh Durham area that would be interested in working with me and setting up parties and more because the only gear I have right now is my laptop, a speaker and fl studio 10 lol but I want to get out there make some money so that I can buy gear |
Al Henger 28.11.2009 | Yeah... I know all about that type of music. I'm hoping maybe things will change in the next couple months/years. |
Matthew Yanagisawa 17.11.2009 | I used to live around NC State and clubs played pretty awful music... pretty much that bro'stacular radio techno that people dance with their fists in the air.... definetly that place need more electro going on.... |
Al Henger 16.11.2009 | dubstep, my bad man, like I said, dont know the genre at all. |
Ryan Morales 16.11.2009 | dub != dubstep different genres mang. confusing, but best not to confuse ppl further :P |
Al Henger 16.11.2009 | dude, its cool that there are actually people from raleigh on this site. Wow. But yeah, the crowd at the berk on saturday was all about some dubstep, and I was really surprised. |
Donnette Parish 16.11.2009 | Yo. I live on Hillsborough Street and fully agree with you. |
Ryan Morales 16.11.2009 | Its cos Dubstep = awesome |
Al Henger 16.11.2009 | Vci is great. Cant really compare it to TT/mixer combo (never used them), But I like it better than cdj 400's to be honest. |
