Whats your IDEAL setup
Posted on: 12.06.2012 by Florencia Jeurissen
Hey everybody,

I'm curious what your ideal DJ and Studio setup is.

My ideal DJ setup is:

  • Midi Fighter Pro Beatmasher with the MF Pro Beat Masher Mapping FOCUS
  • Traktor Kontrol S4 using the default mapping
  • Macbook Pro 8 GB RAM, 126 GB SSD, 13 Inch, running Traktor Scratch Pro 2 and Maschine
  • Midi Fighter 3D mapped with flashflooders DeckGratMotion mapping
  • Traktor Kontrol F1 controlling remix deck C
  • Pioneer DJM 900 NEXUS used as an external mixer setup for Traktor
  • Traktor Kontrol F1 controlling remix deck D
  • Maschine controlling Maschine software on the background, because the displays enable to have only the hardware visible

__________________________________________________ __________________________________________________ ________

And as my Studio setup:

  • Macbook Pro 8 GB RAM, 126 GB SSD, 15 Inch. Running Logic Pro 9, Ableton
  • Livid Instruments CTRL_R controlling Ableton Live Suite 8
  • Nord Stage 2 HA88 controlling Logic Pro 9

So all on a list:

  • Ableton - Live Suite 8 $549
  • Apple - Macbook Pro 15 Inch $
  • Apple - Macbook Pro 13 Inch $1599
  • Clavia - Nord Stage 2 HA88 $3500
  • DJ Techtools - Midi Fighter Pro Beatmasher $299
  • DJ Techtools - Midi Fighter 3D $249
  • Livid Instruments - CTRL_R $699
  • Logic - Pro 9 $199
  • Native Instruments - Traktor Kontrol F1 $249
  • Native Instruments - Traktor Kontrol F1 $249
  • Native Instruments - Traktor Kontrol S4 $899
  • Native Instruments - Maschine $599
  • Native Instruments - Maschine $599
  • Native Instruments - Traktor Scratch A10 $499
  • Pioneer - DJM 900 NEXUS $1999

So a total of $
But for me without the price of the Traktor Kontrol S4, Nord Stage 2 HA88 and the Midi Fighter 3D, because I already have these two.

I'm really intrigued by a setup with 2 CDJs and an S4 running TSP in a 4 deck setup switching back and forth between 2 full decks and 2 remix decks.

So I guess I'd go with:

2 Pioneer CDJ-2000s
S4 with innofader
2 Kontrol F1s
Pioneer HDJ-2000s

Yeah, not mind-blowing but it would be plenty for me...

A man after my own heart.

The weird thing is that scaling back my ridiculous "dream setup" isn't hard.

Move everything in the box and buy a Maschine
use your interface pres (the only reason for the ones I chose was because they're not transparent)
replace the ns-10s with computer speakers and drop the main monitors
switch the interface for a Duet 2 or track16
and the only things that are missing are the Les Paul (already own the Legacy) and a control surface.

…which is basically what I have now (with a much cheaper interface)……it's easier to use and fits in a shoulder bag. It's just less fun to constantly dick around with a mouse than it would be with real knobs.

And compared to what half-decent mixers cost…a single Artist Mix really isn't that bad.

My desire is changing too much to spend money.

I believe right now I want to DJ:
S4
2x F1
later I would like to add DVS so used Technics (I miss them)
already have a midifighter

Production:
Ableton
APC 40
Akai 64 key with some bells and whistles
Maschine

I flip flop frequently on dj gear, so am sticking to my current rig, until I'm ready to commit to remix decks I'm staying at traktor pro 1.x, the sample decks didn't look appealing enough, the remix decks do, but I never early adopt unless forced too. If I got the desire to play out, I would probably move to a CDJ mixer set up to make it easier to practice at home on similar set up to the club, dragging extra junk around is really not appealing. Production I'm saving towards that kit now, I believe it will be just enough that by the time I want something else, I will be working around the gear to do what new kit would.

I wish I'd bought the 92R I had my eye on to replace my 62. I'd maybe like to change the 1000 Mk3's to 2000's. Other than that, I'm more than happy with mine.

2 x STR8-150s (which I have already)
Shure M44-7s (which I have)
A nice high end scratch mixer, maybe a Rane or a Rodec (currently have a beaten up old Hak 310)
Some decent headphones
Records (which I have, but not enough of them!)

And if a DVS existed that was absolutely rock solid, had the features I want, and performed exactly like vinyl, I'd add that and a small controller (for cue points, loops etc.) to the list too, along with an Ultrabook.

DJ setup would be, either 2 cdj2000's and a nice mixer playing with usb.

Production setup would be: high end windows desktop with 2 widescreens operating FL studio, and nice 61 keys keyboard and good pair of monitors, I am set.

Dream DJ setup,

4midiloop, Maschine Mikro and an F1. Obviously running on a laptop with an TP2.

Doesn't take much to make me happy ans still be able to perform the way I'd want to be able to.

Dream Studio set up,

New Mac Pro
Ableton
Maschine
Arturia V Collection
Akai MPK88
Duet 2 Soundcard
Focal Twin6 monitos plus CMS Sub
Waves Complete X (whatever the latest version is)

And done. This is just for producing. Again, simple, efficient but high quality.

my current setup 2x 1200's, Rane 57, dicers & 13" mbp. would love to upgrade to a Rane 62, but have no need ATM.

studio: 23" cinema display, macmini + mbp 13", amxion 25, maschine + komplete + live, m-audio monitors.

its not about how much gear you have, its how well you use what you have.

I'm really happy with my setup right now. (See signature) Guess I'd take a nicer mixer & be totally satisfied.
