Berghain Techno? Posted on: 01.04.2012 by Birgit Gondal I noticed that there was a lot of interest in the Bass Music/Deep House thread, and I thought I'd start a thread based on another form of music thats been catching a lot of peoples ears recently, the dark heavy driving Berghain techno sound. Germaine Bernadin 05.07.2012	Berlin has hundereds of top clubs, that are way, way better than the Tourist Clubs. I have played the Tresor one.... that was cool, but I have played and loads more much more underground clubs and had a better time.

Germaine Bernadin 05.07.2012	I guess I'm lucky living here in Berlin, this is the norm. I've plyed most of the clubs in Berlin..... :-) But I must admit I'm not impressed with the "Big Name" DJs .... they just don't rock it like us propper underground Techno dudes do. I've been looking to expand my library with this sub-genre of techno but have been having a hard time finding it, due to the fact it was hard to describe; knowing a name will definitely help. I love this techno because it seems to have a nice under-melody or at least some atmospheric noise in the back - most techno dealing mostly with percussion sounds so empty to me. Anyway, I don't believe I saw anybody mention Dehix - not sure if he is Berghain techno but his sound is dark and deeply disturbed
Jacqulyn Cruson 02.07.2012	I love this form of Techno, I went to the CLR party for Movement Detroit this year and it was incredible. Saw Liebing, Monoloc, among others. Another label that does this sound really well is droid behavior, caught their amazing afterparty in Detroit as well. They also have a ton of podcasts to listen to. Birgit Gondal 02.07.2012	I quite like the Stellate 2 compilation from stroboscopic at the moment, though i cant afford the vinyl so i have to wait til late july for the release, its being streamed off RA. I LOVE me some sandwell district!

Neal Rayome 03.07.2012	If you want more of the deeper, darker stuff I would suggest the Monad series on Stroboscopic Artefacts, all the stuff from Silent Servant, Peter van Hoesen, Markus Suckut (and the whole Figure SPC label for that matter), Mattias Fridell, Jonas Kopp etc etc. That should take you a couple of days listening to music .

Birgit Gondal 29.04.2012	loving this weird broken beat stuff at the moment, heavy and pounding but still groovy. allows to try some different mixing techniques too, more drum and bass mixing for when the kicks don't match!

Birgit Gondal 11.04.2012	I'm finding myself starting off a lot of my sets with slow paced, dubby and not really the kick heavy/driving techno but interchanging it with some deeper tech house (like some of the deeper stuff from the bass music thread), it actually can work really well if you eq correctly!

Techno was my first love though and holds a special place in my heart and this berghain sound is nice. In my opinion Chris the line between Tech House and Techno often blurrs, and much of what creeps into the Techno and Tech House genres on Beatport for example could often be inter-changed. As loathe as we all are for yet another (sub) genre, the deeper, moody (I call it 'muddier') side of Tech House probably does need a new name.

In saying that, however, they seem to throw back to a lot of schranz and stuff in their non-berghain sets, its still very heavy but its almost like they play 'to berghain' and when they play other places their real personality shines through! I would agree with the club's 'sound' almost being predictable, but when you take the people who are influential on the sound out of that location their personal style shows more and makes it extremely interesting!

Interestingly enough I don't play a whole lot of straight up techno as I tend to swing to the overly moody deep tech house stuff. Is there a more specific genre name for that? Techno was my first love though and holds a special place in my heart and this berghain sound is nice.

Efrain Scharr 04.04.2012	I generally keep my techno dark, dubby, hard, and sometimes deep... just depends on where I am playing as to which direction I go... the techno genre is very wide.

Celestine Porebski 03.04.2012	It's quite a convenient way to refer to a certain sound, too. I mean, trying to describe something like that in terms of genre is always hard. I also often refer to the afterhours mixture of tech house/deep house/techno, which I so dearly love, as Bar25 (or nowadays Kater) music edit: Not a new phenomenon either, just believe of "NY Garage" as a genre description

Ah, now I got it clear! Berghain "genre" comes from the resident DJ's at the club Berghain usually playing some certain genres.
Rochel Gleese 02.04.2012	It's definitely a sub genre even though the guys that make it play it wouldn't like to say so. From what I read it's mostly because of the clubs acoustics, it supposed to sound amazing Shifter47 love uk techno, it sort of made me stop listening to techno at some point but the guys like surgeon, Ben sims and Regis have definitely made a resurgence.

Its seems to be the Berghain sound because most of its residents like Ben Klock and Marcell Dettmann are spinning it, so I've heard quite a few people calling it Berghain Techno!
