Poll: What's your favourite music genre?
Posted on: 19.07.2012 by Sylvia Greener
Hey everybody!
I know there are fair amounts of individualists here at DJTT but I assume there are also lots of people who prefer the more common, I'll call them "mainstream"-genres of music in general or EDM to be more precise.
But I'm really interested what the concrete numbers of people loving this or another genre of music are.
It's about your personal favourite kind of music!
Take part in the poll and enjoy!

Hm, questionable genre-list, but I chose "Minimal House" because it might be the closest to what I'd choose (I mean srsly, listing neither Deep nor Tech House? Seems strange) and because I don't know what "the good old kind of house music" is supposed to mean (Chicago House from the 80ies? Horrible Vocal House from the early 2000s?)

Very hard to nail in one answer. For the poll I put Drum and Bass, purely because since I was 11 and snagged Jungle Mania '95, jungle / d'n'b has been a staple party of my musical diet, and I'll always love it

Here's why there's no Hip-Hop, R&B, Funk...:
I limited the poll to EDM (except of Pop/Rock to give at least one non-EDM option). It was not possible to include more non-EDM genres as well due to the limited number of poll options. But maybe we'll have another poll when some of the EDM-genres turn out to be almost irrelevant for the DJTechtoolers.

Yes, sorry for that. I decided to concentrate more on classic EDM genres as there are so many of them and I had to reduce the long list to 15 poll options (more options aren't possible). Next time we'll throw out some of the less popular EDM genres and include hip hop as I've seen many might have chosen this option. But this focusses more on common EDM at the moment.

Dubstep - Got me into EDM, started out way back with guys like Kromestar or Gothtrad, and over the years I've come to also like the stuff that Datsik and Excision were putting out, all the way up to now with the ultra-heavy Knife Party/Skrillex sort of stuff. Which you could debate all day whether its really Dubstep, but it's that tempo I love that fits so nicely with it. I'll just say Electrostep for that though. Also loving this Dungeon stuff that's been going on for a year or so, great stuff.

Electro House - Still love older Benassi stuff, Vinylshakerz. I know some of you wouldn't say thats true electro, but when I believe of your basic electro, it's that sort of dirty nauseating synth that comes to mind. Lately I've been really into this Complextro stuff where it's bunch of different synths, with half-time sections.

Drum & Bass / Drumstep - Sort of in the same boat as Dubstep, never got too into the whole Jungle thing. Honestly I can enjoy older dub step but it's the newer Drum & Bass I really like. That includes Pendulum too!

Moombahton - I like it, tempo feels good, another favorite genre of mine. Even the stuff that has the house drum pattern but at 110 is great.

Trance - I'm very selective about it, but I really like it when it has good emotion in it. Psytrance is fun too, will always be a huge fan of Infected Mushroom.

Glitch Hop - Once again, very selective, but Pretty Lights puts out good stuff IMO. And a lot of this heavier almost dub step at a glitch hop tempo I like.

Breaks - Don't listen to a lot of it, but it's good. Every now and then I'll have a song I really like and realize it's breaks. So there.

Hip-Hop / Rap - Very mixed bag for me, and won't really go into that. But I like most all hip-hop, although I dislike this very recent hip-hop coming out that seems to be about the same thing over and over again. But modern rap music production is awesome and has gave birth to what I've always wanted, the beat and not having to listen to some trash tell me about his money and bitches; Trap!

80's Rock - Still love it heehee

And that's about it!

yeah, my collection is a bit of everything and i've spent so many years finding music i dig. i would go so far as to say if someone can't find something they like in there...they just don't like music.

most country music is torture for my ears, but i can still respect the talent, writing structure, sound quality, etc. i could probably find some good old school country jams though. some of that stuff from 40+ years ago would probably make for some good samples.

i can generally find something i like in any genre of music (some genres easier than others)...except poppy country, i just can't take any of that stuff. or most pop tunes in general, they tend to get too cheesy for my tastes, though i do like a fair amount of pop rock songs from the likes of self, jellyfish, jason faulker, brendan benson, etc.

I will ALWAYS love Drum and Bass first and foremost.

But it's not what I follow or listen to on my own free time mostly anymore. I generally go to a lot of DnB shows, and prefer to have good DJ's blast me with it, rather than doing the legwork on my own with it. I also have friends who are absolute nutters for it, and well, when I get tossed a mix here and there that's generally DnB.

Right now my close second is breaks. I absolutely adore the stuff, and really love it when it steps out of the mold and brings on the funk.

Basically, I just like funky music.

Basically:

Drum and Bass (and honestly, I'm a jump-up kind of guy more often than liquid)
Breaks (the funkier the better)
Hardstyle
Deep House
Electro House and Dubstep (on the same level for me these days, though I really do adore a good wubbly mix of either)
Moombahton and Moombahcore (although I'm not sold on moombahsoul)
Tech House also has been growing on me lately.
Glitch Hop
and once and awhile some banging techno.

... I don't really know why I have to break up the sub-genre's of house more than anything. I really like it, but I don't have a good explanation. It's just so much harder to compare different styles of house than anything else really.

Don't let these guys sway you it's a nice poll. Once you start opening the "genre flood gates" you're gonna get "what about Country and Southern Rock? ... etc." .... "Yacht Rock !!" ... " Moombahton !!!" ..... "Trap !!!!!"
