Best headphones offering style. comfort and durability?
Posted on: 16.10.2013 by Carlotta Melman
wanting to purchase some headphones, i have read loads of reviews like "top dj headphones 2013" , "best headphones to buy in 2013" etc , but still unsure on what headphones I want.

I have considered the ultrasone dj 1 pro, hdj2000 k, v-moda crossfader m 100 and the Audio Technica ATH-M50 or newer models etc. I have ruled out the Sennheiser HD25 and the Aiaiai TM 1 because I don't like the look of them, I am not a fashion crazy sort of person but compared to other headphones, they don't look the business, but that's what I believe and I am buying headphones for myself, so I want to satisfied.

I don't have a budget, but I would like to spend more and get something worth keeping for years, than something that will just do for the meantime, so am I looking at the high end of the market.

I am wanting headphones with a balance sound, nice bass but not too over powering, swirling headcup's ( if thats what you call it? ), removable cable if possible, must come with a case to protect them when not in use, I want these headphones to last me and not easily break, although I pretty much look after my stuff anyway, noise canceling, comfortable enough to wear for 3 - 4 hours on end, I don't believe I have missed anything, but if I have please mention.

I use 20ohm Shures on my DJM 900 and it seems fine.

With the Amperior's 18ohm impedance, are they still good for hooking up to standard DJ mixers? I would like to get a pair but I want to use them both at home and in the club.

I've got the TMA-1 Studio Young Guru edition and they are by FAR the most comfortable headphones I've ever used.

Didn't realize that, been a while since I've seen a new pair in the box Still $150 is a bloody great price for the Amperior vs $320 for the HD25 Alu or even $200 for the stock HD25.

It's such a personal thing. I'd go for sound quality and durability over comfort. I tend to keep my headphones around my neck and only use one ear for cueing.

YES! .. they are essentially exactly the same HD25 aluminum (which retail @ $320 same as Amperiors original price) not to mention they have the nicer velour cushions and copper wire (rather than steel) and lower impedance.

They were discontinued a lil while ago when the hd25 aluminum was announced hence the low price I guess.

Studio headphones have a super flat eq curve, if you want dj headphones specifically, i would go for the dj version or the pro700's. I have the 500mk2's myself and are loving them.
You definitely want to go for an "over ear" design for extended use.

Just picked up the amperiors at $149.99. These feel really nice, only thing that bugs me is how short the cable is. They sound great tho!

I have placed a order on the Sennheiser HD25 C II headphones, I also ordered some zomo hd25 red ear cup and headband padding, I thought it would nice with the black. I can't wait to find out how these sound and sit on my head, I will give my review when these babies arrive.

Personal advice on ATH M50's

Pros:
-comfy
-amazing sound quality for $150(or w/e they cost)
-comes with a nice case
-1/8 to 1/4 gold plated adapter
-collapsible

Cons:
-85% plastic
-it's cheap plastic
-Bass is only good at absurdly low freq

And yeah. I mean, I love them but I'm constantly minding how I handle them because they just feel so fragile. Another pro (I guess) is- through a mixer they are very loud. Like, if you're wearing them on your shoulders you can hear them clearly over a modest sized booth monitor.

Anyway I used to have a chart showing all the popular models of over ears. You know, frequencies vs price vs blah blah blah. Someone has to have it besides me.

To everyone suggesting the HD 25s and TMA-1s, the OP specifically said he ruled them out. I believe they look sweet, but he's not a fan.

Sennheiser hd 25 Aluminiums FTW.

They look amazing, feel amazing, and sound amazing! The best headphones I've ever owned to date IMO.

Sony MDR-V600 are the most comfortable headphones I have ever used. Good for a full day at the office listening the whole time. The "over the ear" (as opposed to "on the ear") design makes a HUGE difference. Mine are about 15 years old...and have survived sitting on the desk or being on my head for that full time. I am on the 4th or 5th set of ear pads.

Sony 7506's have lived in a gig bag for 10-ish years. They have held up great to life in the gig bag. Not as comfortable as the V600's...but still a nice balance between "compactness" and "comfort."

I always have have a TMA-1 studio pair with me. AIAIAI is my choice but like deevey I could stand to use the AKG 619, Pios, or HD25s.

Most comfortable for me:

Sony MDR-1 (best)
Vmoda's (but heavy)
Sony 7506's
AKG 619

I cant wear any of the below for more than a few minutes:

Pioneers
TMA's
HD25's

In all honestly go try the blasted things, everyones head is different !

Me and around 12 of my mates all swear by Sennheiser HD25s. 4 of these mates have had there headphones for over 12 years.

I have a few mates that love the HDJ2000s and had one mate who loves the HDJ2000 but moved to the HD25s due to comfort, lightness and other factors.

I friend of mine recently went from HDJ2000 to Beats Mixr.
I know that Beats isn't the most popular pair of headphones among DJs and i agree, that most of them really sucks, BUT i actually like these Mixr headphones. Stylish, comfortable and sound almost on pair with HDJ2000.
Own HDJ2000 myself, but there life is coming to an end (parts falling off etc.) and i am very much considering going the Beats way (there are reviews both here on DJTT and on DJWorx.com)

Btw: Note that HDJ2000 doesn't come with a case to protect them. That is extra cost.

I have worn my tma-1's for up to 8 hours at a time.

I once used a pair as my computer system audio and since I work on a computer it meant I was basically wearing them for 10 hours a day 7 days a week.

I honestly believe they are the bees knees
