How can I pick up a gig through social media? (Facebook, Twitter, etc.)
Posted on: 04.08.2012 by Burl Kennick
I am 14 and im yet to pick up DJ gig anywhere. I was wondering if there would be anyone good ways of letting people know that your up for a gig somewhere. The summer is coming to a end and Im pretty sure someone will throw a party soon. I really want to get a gig. That is my next step. I just need some tips. Thanks! DJUSAUS

Update: Before you start reading through all the posts, just know that this has gotten off the topic of getting a gig through social networking.

If i were u i would open up a mixcloud acc, download a variety of tracks and do a hour mix in as many genres that u like. Try to do a bit more then dubstep....once u have done a few hour long mixes, then people can analyze how well u peform in long periods of time. The reason u do this is because if the only mix u have is a dubstep mix, and if im not a big fan of dubstep, then im not gonna hire u for the evening ...but if i can c that ur capable of doing a genre that i enjoy for my party imma hire u.

If kids see that I actually have some form of DJ gear then I know they would let me play. I know that what it sounds like im saying is that there going to let me in just because i have a S2. But what im saying is they would know I take it seriously enough to actually buy a mixer, get a macbook and show up.
damn, is this how kids believe these days...look man, a lot of the above replys gave you good advice and I'll just briefly add to it. If you really want gigs, post a 30 minute mix and I like the idea of putting posters around your school to get people to wonder whats going on. They'll see it, go to the link, and if its good they'll listen. Ya, they might believe its weird that a kid in their school is putting up posters of his Dj mix but to say that you wont do it because they'll consider you as a "try to hard" is just fuckin stupid (and I mean that in the nicest way possible).

In life, to succeed, you want, no, YOU NEED people to believe/know you're a try to hard. Employers find it endearing that you will go out on a limb to put yourself out there. I also agree that you shouldnt worry about gigs until you're 18 though (besides house parties thats all good and should be fun). But practice your brains out for the next 4 years and by the time you are 18 you will be getting club gigs that are 21+ and you'll really start to make a name for yourself.

put yourself out there. work hard. and please please please, dont give a second thought to what everyone believes about you. You might not get it now, but when youre in your 20s you wont give a rats ass about everyone believes besides employers/fans.

Somehow I believe this is utopian. Promoters don't pick up someone from a social site just because they claim they are DJs. I.e. you need a body of work, connections and proof that you do a good job. Start with body of work and connections. The rest will come from that.
you forgot....

Promotor: and we will pay you $1000 for the evening

Get experience. Learn your gear, learn the music... Dj'ing is an art. Let's see a mix of yours?

You've got plenty of time to grow as an artist. if you keep with it in ten years you won't have to worry about where the next gig will be. patience, young padwan...
Thats kind of what im shooting for. A house party

I agree somewhat with your first half / the entitlement bit, but definitely don't agree with the second half. I believe that he should and perhaps needs to perform. It might provide a reality check or at least some readjustment.

Being 14, the only parties that you will be able to DJ will be that of your friends or your parents friends, people you know. At your age and lack of experience, no one is going to just hire you because you say you are a DJ. I would try to find a local mobile DJ company and ask them if there is anything you could do to help them on gigs. I don't know what the work laws are in your area so you may or not be able to get a little pay but this will give you experience on handling parties and clients, know what to expect, and give you a little insight abuot how to properly handle DJing for a real client. You are only 14, you have plenty of time to get gigs, at this stage you should learn all you can about the DJ business.

Where would you like to perform first? Have you had some thoughts about that? You said someone is bound to throw a party. Birthday party? House party? If you don't know anyone personally to ask them, if you can DJ at their party, then you've got to get other people in your area to know you. I believe SirReal's advice is pretty good. And BTW, you'll always have someone who will dislikes you and what you are trying to accomplish. If it is a very small group of people, just ignore them. If it is mostly everyone, quit DJing.

Dude your 14 wait until your 18 before you even believe about getting gigs. I was djing minimal techno and playing gigs in clubs when I was 15-16 but only because of where I lived and the people I knew.

So, you're supposed to sit back, do nothing and let everybody figure out that they should ask you to DJ their school party? Oh yeah, you're part of that generation where, in baseball, everybody get's to hit, get on base and score a point and every team gets a trophy at the end of the season. BRO, go out and MAKE IT HAPPEN!. When you get into the real world NOBODY is going to hand you a job and no one is "entitled" to be famous.
