How Clubbing Changed The World/House Party - Channel 4 Tonight

Should be interesting viewing, not convinced about Guetta and Will I Am being interviewed to be honest, especially with all the pioneers/underground movers of dance music over the last few decades who could/should have been interviewed.

Then afterwards, 6 hour house party with Grandmaster Flash, Annie Mac, Soul II Soul, Erick Morillo, A-Trak, Horse Meat Disco.

i believe the difference was Flash played more of a block party style set like they did back in the day, hence his use of the mic shoutin out all the towns and such, trying to get the public into the whole vibe thru twitter etc. ive seen him live more than a handful of times and thats the way he plays, he vibes off that crowd participation, and yeah i can see how it would upset people because you cant really do that on tv can ya

but a-trak killllled it dead every one else was just sub par to me compared to a-trak and while annie mac thru down sum heat and had me a bit bouncey she was still just an opener for a-trak in my opinion

I was gutted to say it myself but he really was. He can't be void of criticism on past merits. Twitter was blowing up with people saying similar. He had nothing on technique in my eyes compared to A Trak and his music selection was mostly generic poppy house (I swear he played Levels?), with some hip hop. This was a house music celebration. Neither A Trak or Flash are my kind of music, but I thoroughly enjoyed and appreciated A Trak's set.

I also follow a fairly big promoter who has a private account that said he booked him once, he called to say he couldn't make it then was on the radio that evening in Ibiza (ie. he'd gotten a better gig) and played a 'cringeworthy' set which turned out to be a let off for him. Said he's also the only artist he's ever worked with that demanded a spotlight on him despite the fact he wasn't the one DJing. There wasn't any more details about that.

Makes me wince every time I hear that phrase used. The one above with E and D and M. Loved the quote in the program saying how America 20 years ago invented house music then we accepted it gladly in the UK and now the US is terming a new phrase for it to make it their own:

Annie smashed it as per, but the fact she was on straight after Flash probably helped. Morillo, not my kinda music (none of it was really) but a very enjoyable set and gets well into it. A Trak, again not into his EDM type music but he's one of the best classic type DJ's I've seen. The guy is unbelievable on turntables. SoulIISoul were awesome and absolutely nailed the vibe. And then I went to sleep.

If they did a series and varied the lineup a bit more to include deep house/tech house/techno etc. it'd go down ridiculously well.

Also, just me being a bit picky the show is about dance music and the club scene from it's inception, not just 'EDM' which quite correctly only features very briefly as the term used to cover the current growth in the US (about 2 decades behind the rest of us in the UK & Europe ).

Heard lots of good things about this over FB. Most people seem in agreement that Annie Mac really rocked it, and Grand Master Flash somehow messed it up.
Gonna try and DL it.

GMF was such an alp, so much shite talk over the mic and meaningless scratching.

I am a beginner (1year) and got a confidence booster in my mixing from watching his set haha.

Anyone else believe its a shame they had all that space and light show go to waste when they could have filled up the place with a crowd?

I agree with this completely. After Morillo came A Trak though, and I thought he took the entire show to a whole new level.

I watched it all through last evening with some friends.

It was a bit sad to see Grandmaster Flash like that - he really was that bad

After him was Annie Mac - I fast forwarded most of it, not my thing at all musically, but she was pretty good mixwise the bits I saw - would be a good set in a club.

Erick Morrillo was next and he played a really good house set: some great tracks, old & new mixed up - his mixing was pretty tight and he did quite a lot with effects and stuff - he was really into it and was awesome - but he finished his set with a Will.I.Am song which was something Guetta would play.. Terrible.

A-Trak was next and he was brilliant - funky tracks and some scratching and old hip hop as well - technically brilliant.

Then Horse Meat Disco were on and they were the best for me.
I've never heard them before but they play 70s and 80s disco - proper disco though - imagine Paradise Garage in the 70s, not Saturday Night Fever.
They were 3 trannies dancing and 3 dj's in the booth and they had little dance routines for each track, which sounds cack but was funny as

Then Soul II Soul finished, mixing up R & B and speed garage with live vocals over the top, and they were very good as well.

Great show - I have it on my cable box and I'll try get it off there this week and upload.

I suspect the main reason being the premise that all dance music evolved from House music and split in to sub genres in the early 90s, so probably would be a program in it's own right to go through all the sub genres of dance music.
