Podcasting 101: How to get into iTunes (the Q&A thread)
Posted on: 23.09.2013 by Libbie Orion
So some time ago i wrote this article for DJTT
Podcasting 101: Get Your DJ Podcast Onto iTunes

Follow the link to get all the info on how to make this happen.

Now the reason i started this thread is because, i am still getting quite a lot of emails on this article.
Thank you DJTT for letting me send it over and thanks for publishing it!

However more than 70% of the questions or issues people have getting their podcast published, are all the same.
So i thought it was time to start a thread, and as time goes on, everyone will be able to find the answer to their problem by looking through the replies. Not that i wont continue to help you guys out with it, i certainly will, but i do know that plenty of people, try the article on their own and before contacting me to help with an error or hiccup, they spend hours or days trying to solve it on their own.
Hey thats all well and good but at least, this thread can serve as a bit of a FAQ or knowledge base for you guys.
I really hope it helps.

So with that, if anyone has any questions on it, please hit the reply button and lets get this helpful tool started for you guys / gals / aliens / djtech-tool-igans!

Enjoy the day everyone. Talk soon

okay, so i have now deleted the episode from my itunes podcast listing inside of itunes (not the istore), so it is not showing anywhere anymore, not really solving it but at least im not seeing it anymore - ignorance is bliss.

with regards to the "subtitle", in itunes that is the "description" just above the listing of episodes. i really cannot find this damn thing in feedburner and they dont even have support to contact really, hmmmmm if you find out at some point let me know how to change that yea...thanks!!!

Quick update - unfortunately the resyncing did not change anything. The episode that I wanted to delete is still appearing in my iTunes Podcast list, however it has been erased from the iStore page. Should anybody know how to erase that from the iTunes page, please let me know.

The feedburner subheadline I still have not found. I would love to amend that, but not sure where to do that, I dont seem to be allowed to get into the original feed's settings, or can I?

pressed resync now. lets see what happens.

in the meantime i am really not sure where to find that subheadline tab in feedburner... when i click on "edit feed details" it doesnt show the subheadline field, if you come across it at some stage just let me know willya.

feedburner is just aggregating your blogger account. Its just pulling info from there and itunes lists what they see in feedburner.
A) amend the feedburner post:
If i remember correctly, you and go in feedburner to its main page and EDIT the feed subheadline at anytime. Just need to find that SUBHEADLINE area and change it and click the REFRESH FEED button (ill tell you where that is in a second) read on.....

B) My podcast is still showing in an area of iTunes over view when it shouldnt:
well we can thank iTunes for this one. Its a CACHE they keep and who knows when they refresh it. Its a bit difficult to force that one but here is something you can do

Log into feedburner
click on your feed title (i believe you only have ONE)
click on the TROUBSHOOTIZE tab
scroll down to the RESYNC button
(read below the button to notice what recync does)

click RESYNC..... and personally, at this point i wouldnt add anything to my blog or make changes to feedburner
then wait about another hour, and click it again.

Then you play the 24hr waiting game with iTunes and check the over view again in iTunes.

and lastly:

how can i amend the feedburner post?
i remember i put a subheadline for the podcast in there, but i would like to change that, you know how to do that?

hahahahahah, you are such a legend man!!!!! that is hilarious, thank you very much for this very understandable walk-through, hahaha.

the episode has indeed come off now, however it has only come off from the list in the iTunes Store. It is still listed in my iTunes Podcast overview though, do you know how to take that off too? you could just have another fake conversation with me again, would love to help out that way ahahaha.

yes all changes take 24 hours my man.
Secret little hint on testing out your podcast in your own itunes, without having to WAIT for them to update their server.

Open iTunes,
click on PODCASTS in the left panel
there you should see every podcast you are subscribed to.

Antifmradio: Do You see yours?

JanuaryOne: Yes i see mine because i am subscribed to it

Antifmradio: Awesome! Do you see like a arrow on its left?

JanuaryOne: Yes, and when i click it, it points down and expands all the episodes in my podcast

Antifmradio: Perfect! Now go to your blogger account and edit the mp3 OUT of any one of the episodes or posts. Just take out the mp3 link

JanuaryOne: Ok done. I did that but i still see everything normal

Antifmradio: Hold on man. We arent done. Now look at your iTunes Podcast again and right click it, then select UPDATE. It should refresh your podcast in ONLY YOUR iTunes program

JanuaryOne: WOW ! What just happened!? There is an episode missing now. And its the one i took the mp3 out of.

----------------------Ok so yea thats a fake conversation between me and JanuaryOne but still------------------

Thats how you test any updates you make to your podcasts.
While you can refresh them in your screen instantly, the ones that dont change for 24 hours are ONLY the ones showing in the iTunes Store under Podcasts.

whats so great about this?...... a few things..... here they are

A) Since iTunes takes 24 hours to show updates on its own, you have an advantage to
correct typos
update mp3s
reupload images
add in tracklists
or even completely change a mix

B) Let say you were NOT subscribed to JanuaryOnes podcast. When you found him in the Podcast area of iTunes
you might just see maybe ONE or TWO episodes. And to see more of them, you would have to wait every 24 hours to see, and listen to MORE episodes.

However

Now lets say you ARE subscribed to his podcast (or any other for that matter). You have access to not only the podcasts that are showing in the iTunes store but you have INSTANT access to new shows uploaded, before the iTunes server updates itself

This means, all the dj has to do is create a new blog, and upload the mp3. As soon as its uploaded, you can download it
All you need to do is REFRESH the listing, even though the iTunes server doesnt show it in their store yet!

As long as it exists in the djs blog, its available.
In some cases, depending on the speed of the upload, a new episode is available for STREAMING before the file is completely uploaded.

youre a star mate, thanks understood and done it. now just waiting for itunes to make the change within the next 24 hours.

another question though: how do i delete an episode?
i thought it would be as simple as deleting the blogger post you want deleted, but that does not seem to work, unless itunes take another 24 hours for that too, do they?

no that image is not the one in feedburner
When you submitted your podcast to iTunes originally, you had to give them a link for your PODCAST image
Now keep in mind the podcast is the ENTIRE string of episodes
inside of a podcast you have EPISODES. An episode is basically each mix you upload.

So an EPISODE is inside of a PODCAST... got it.. ok lets move on

now. When you submitted your PODCAST image to itunes, you gave them a link
www.JanuaryOne/im-a-dj-/podcast-image.jpg
for example
All you need to do is create a new image to use as your podcast image (offline)
then save it as "podcast-image.jpg"
just like the original one you submitted

now once you got the new image (offline) and its the correct size
upload it exactly to the same location as the old one. It should write over the old file with the new file.
Then youll need to give itunes 24 hours to update their copy of your itunes podcast listing

Always remember that!
inside the iTunes store, no updates appear for about 24 hours

Gents, is it possible to amend the Feed in Feedburner? I dont see the option where I can change e.g. the cover image. Coz I would like to put in a new cover. The cover in iTunes Podcast listing is always the embedded image of the file you are uploading, but the cover in iTunes store is the one you are setting in Feedburner right? How can I change that?

yea they are hard about that now
they even sent message to all radio station owners who have their stations listed in the iTunes RADIO listing that they should also update their images to the same
so
its not just about podcasts anymore
However, Jan-one didnt have any problems with his images. his was "Where he placed the mp3 link in his blog post"

youre welcome mate.
Shouldnt be a problem. there was just a small correction with yours.

CORRECTION WAS:
iTunes wants to look at your blog post and notice the mp3 as the first thing in the code
You however had all your trackslist and mix info first, then the link to the mp3 all the way at the bottom.

i believe i did the same thing when i started mine.
I had a few the correct way (mp3 near the top)
and i started posting some with the mp3 at the bottom, and even though i was already listed in iTunes podcast,
each time my podcast was UPDATED in the itunes listing, it just wouldnt show the posts with the mp3s at the bottom of the text.

When i corrected them, and moved the link to the top, it was all gravy
