Posted on: 24.04.2011 by Kristofer Krauel
Ok so this is the official thread for train 2. 4 dj's, 30 mins each, you know the deal.

Order as follows:

1. bumtsch
2. darryljames
3. Me
4. haze324

Do we need a soundcloud account or will Mega Upload be good enough?

Same time scales apply as train 1: 5 days to complete your mix!! Let's not let this train drag on!!!

Good luck. Over to you Bumsch!

stellar effort bumtsch

Your part is hot but clean. Turn it down a bit when you record and you'll be golden I reckon
Oh, and uploading part1/2/3 re-cut from everyone's bits and bobs for Haze to use.
Darius Masciangelo
20.05.2011
fair point, one thing I am not so keen on with the s4 is that it seems to be pretty loud output and you can't really see where it is on levels until the single red lights start to light up! At least with my old djm600 the range of lights is much bigger, anyhoo, hope it's ok, I'll record quieter next time, it's easier to turn it up in post prod than it is to turn it down!
Delila Vandommelen
20.05.2011
It's safer to be a little quieter and then turn the recorder volume slightly up, as turning it down in traktor so it doesn't look like it's clipping anymore just means you can't see when you are actually clipping the input stage. At least with external recording this is how it kinda works out.
You end up clipping the input, the recorded file doesn't hit 0db yet when you zoom in you can see the peaks squashed at minus whatever db you had it turned down to.
Darius Masciangelo
20.05.2011
good effort mate, I believe i do have levels pretty hot but I also keep the gain on the recorder down a couple of notches, maybe that's the problem! When I checked it after it wasn't clipping in Soundforge though, bouncing at a couple of points below 0db.
Delila Vandommelen
20.05.2011
I believe things will work out.
Just merged my original part with Darryl's original part, which matches my levels, has no glitches. It almost clips but doesn't distort like in it's reproduction in the 1hr part that's on DB.
That one hour has the best quality for Kooper's segment so I'm also all set for merging part 3.
edit : ouch, a 6db drop on the Koop's I'll help your mastering a little bit by gently bumping the levels up there. I'll have them back to the level where you got on the train.
And then you can glue yours in if you can find a good splicing point. Else I'll do it
Darius Masciangelo
20.05.2011
bumtsch, not entirely sure what you mean but is there anything I can do to help with this? want a clean copy of my piece? can't recall what I did with it, not sure if I normalise or maximised but I'll find the original if you need it, sorry if I f**ked it up though
Delila Vandommelen
20.05.2011
Ouch, this is gonna be a tough one. I was going to splice my part with the big file containing parts 2/3/4, with some slight eq and level tweaks it'd have worked. And then I heard some slight glitches in Darryl's part that I didn't have in his upload.
So I thought - fine, let's just link my part with Darryl's so his parts gets a cleaner quality, and then join this to the rest of the file when Kooper takes over.
Not so fast though - turns out Darryl's recording was very hot and got quite toned down in the two subsequent passes. so I'm not even sure where I can cut it in with the rest.
I'll keep at it though.
Delila Vandommelen
20.05.2011
Ok, just tell me which file you used. I'll merge them after work and reupload and you can run isotope on it.
Julissa Serrone
20.05.2011
bumtsch,

hey man, my bad I just used the most up to date folder in the file and went from there. Your file and the other one are both in FLAC format in Koopers DB. Can you join them and re-upload. I'm not all that great at patching two files together, I don't wanna jack up your part
Delila Vandommelen
20.05.2011
Oh, hi, it's missing my part at the beginning :0 It's "djtt techouse_fixed2.flac" on dropbox. Darryl snipped the tail end off it but didn't join the parts.
I can snap it back together if you like, but it'd have to be with an unprocessed version of the rest - then you can process it all when it's back on DB.

Just need to stitch the 2 parts together toevening and will upload to Dropbox.

Haze can you PM me your email address so i can ping an invite accross to you.

It seems ive gone more towards the techno end of the spectrum as well so hope its not too dark!!!

Darius Masciangelo
06.05.2011
hey, was just checking how we are getting on up in here?

To be more precise on the cut between Bumtsch and mine, there is a 4 bar bass eq strip that starts at 29 mins and 47 secs and finishes at 29 mins 55 secs, the same point in my mix (where the eq comes back in) is at just after the 16 seconds point. I would have a go at stitching these together but mine is recorded at 44.1khz and bumtsch's is as 48khz so am not quite sure how to "dither" it down!

Don't bother. I'll figure out where the phrases are, dither down my part to 44k and truncate that down to the sample so it fits right in. Not sure if I'll want to perform gain matching though.
But maybe we should whether Haze is willing to do any of this when mastering the final product..

Right, that's me done, only lifted it from 127 to 128 bpm (wooo!) but slotted 9 track into about 32 mins, tracklisting as below. Handing the baton off to Mr Kooper as we speak

Title Artist
Glob - Ben Klock Remix 1 - 5A Kenny Larkin
Utopolys - Original Mix - 6A Uto Karem
NY Funk - Original Mix - 8A Oscar L
XTC - Riva Starr Cut - 7B Butch
Wall Of Sound - Original Club Mix - 7A Phunk Investigation
Red Ryder - Original Club Mix - 9A Hertz
Nitro - Original Club Mix - 9A Michael Woods
Carry Me Away - Micky Slim & Funkagenda Remix - 9A Chris Lake
Astana - Original Mix - 8A Funkagenda

As I have all the musical talent of a clownfish I have all mine in camelot keys, gotta use the tools you are given

Not sure if this is relevant or not right now but there is a bass eq fade and return @ 3.09secs from the end of Bumtsch's recording, mine starts 8 bars before that fade and I did a bass eq fade and return to the same point.

have fun
