Crossfader: who really uses it?
Posted on: 10.08.2013 by Leon Albornoz
I am just curious about this. I've been DJ'ing for 2 years now and today I laughed when I looked at my crossfader, as I realized I never use it. And I mean, never, for anything!

I spin Tech House, Techno, Minimal, Tribal, etc.

Who in here feels that the crossfader is totally unnecessary in dance music?

And if you feel it is needed, how do you use it?

Mate, I haven't seen a tape deck on a hi-fi for about 6 years.

iPod dock, sure, Tape Deck? Fuck no lol.

It's like floppy drives on PCs.

Duuude, I had been looking for this Jamie xx set for some time hahaha nice to find it finally! really nasty nasty nasty stuff he's spinning hahaha I love this guy!!

And about the crossfader issue: I use it all the time for transitioning from A to B xD I guess I should start using the line faders for more control

I never use mine at all either but I've been trying to incorporate it into my mixes somehow lately lol, I never have any luck. I suck with the crossfader.

For a spring to be tight enough, you would need monster finger strength. At that point, I believe it would be counter productive. Maybe for a training fader lol

i'm not sure about a spring loaded crossfader but with the transformer switch or flash selector its spring loaded and i can pull off open or closed fader scratches. btw the spring is slower than me on the crossfader thats why me and alot of people don't use it. you'd be surprise how fast your hand can really move once you have the muscle memory NH NM :P
Surely that depends on the spring tension though? I find it difficult to believe that someone's fingers can close a crossfader quicker than a REALLY tight spring :P

Not putting a cross fader on alienates a whole section of the market. Use it or not, it's necessary.

i don't really use it myself (upfaders do it for me), but i'd have to agree.

For open fader scratches, you would just hold the fader open, or the spring would only push it so far.

This, basically. I can't scratch for shit because I can't do that crabbing thing... no matter how I hold my hand, my thumb just doesn't have that "springiness". Add a little spring to the crossfader holding it closed == win.

how about a motorized crossfader where you can record click Patterns. Or well it doesn't even have to be motorized, believe about it, you hit record, do the fader movements over 4 bars and it then starts auto repeating those movements freeing up a hand of yours to twist dem filter knobs while still killin it.

+1

How would open-fader scratches work? Why would anyone want to make scratching easier?

I've been DJing for 15 years and haven't used the crossfader for the past 14 of those.

If I had my own way, mixers wouldn't even have them; or at the very least, they'd be RIGHT out of the way.

Anybody who believes this is merely stating their preference, the way they work.
It's not a question that any objective person can answer without also saying "in my opinion".

I use the crossfader no matter what music I am spinning. It's a habit thing. I like the safety of knowing that the crossfader is to one side and that I wont accidentally air a track whilst cueing.

As a scratcher I also need the crossfader.

The question is just as unanswerable as "Do you need the Gain knobs" some people use them to mix, some people barely touch them.
I know a gazillion "dance music" DJ's never use the crossfader but I bet a gazillion playing the same music do use it.

And as for the right and wrong or tradition way of using the crossfader, meh hang all that. Use it the way you want. Some DJ's use it to fade (not just cut).
Arnulfo Morten
10.08.2013
lol..... line faders are for fading, crossfader is for cutting if you don't cut or know what cutting is then you prob don't use it i've seen a few times where a dude was running 4 decks and couldn't assign them the way he wanted to his crossfader so he used a combination of the line fader and the crossfader to mix between the decks. It was on a behringer djx mixer

I don't use it myself but yeah, exactly what DISaS73R said. Quick cuts, although it's not essential there and scratching.
Olin Easley

The crossfader is used for quick cuts (believe dubstep, dark garage and stuff like that). Not to mention that it's essential for scratching.
